Desires and emotions are not reliable guides for life; through daily mental practice and letting go of identification with the mind, inner freedom and the experience of a higher reality can be attained.
Only when the mind is purified will it guide you. Until then, do not listen to it. The mind should not be the driving force of you.
The text refers to a chapter from the book Saadana by Samshibananda and derives from it a daily practice of mental self-observation. The core message is that the mind may only guide once it has been purified, and that desires and emotions should not be the driving force of life. Desires are described as subconsciously rooted, and can be uncovered and allowed to pass through regular turning over of the mind. The speaker criticizes the societal notion that fulfilling desires leads to a happy life, and sets against it the experience of inner joy and the experience of God. As concrete aids, yoga exercises such as sun salutations and meditation are mentioned, which produce a certain contentment and relativize the significance of desires. The text calls for detaching from identification with thoughts and desires in order to reach a higher reality and true freedom. The relevance to the present lies in the observation that people in today's society continue to follow the pattern of desire and consumption, even though they actually know better.

Dominion over the Mind from the book Saadana by Samshibananda. Only when the mind is purified will it guide you. Until then, do not listen to it. The mind should not be the driving force of you. Your desires and your emotions should not determine your life. You must rely on something else. Only when you learn to detach yourself from thought-desires can you achieve freedom. It is established that desires will never cease if you fulfill them. The more desires you fulfill, the more desires will come. The desires that surface in the mind have their roots in the subconscious. Since these roots are hidden, the mind must be turned over daily and the roots of these desires must be exposed. When desires arise, let the mind wander for a while. Observe how it behaves. And then you will see that the desires also pass away again. All the time, the fussy mind is pulled outward. It wants this and it wants that. Internalize it and try to see within yourself what is happening. It requires regular practice to detach oneself from this game of the mind. Analyze the mind and go beyond the mind. These words and this entire chapter, from which I always only read a few sentences and then always skip several paragraphs, is something else that is normally presented to us in this society. Find a desire, satisfy it, and then you have a happy life. But is that so? Yes, not everyone truly knows it. Nevertheless, if he suddenly has a desire, is it really the case that he says, I will just let it pass by? One wants this and one wants that. And if someone else gets something that one does not get oneself, that is even worse. But we can learn to let thoughts pass by, let desires pass by, let grievances pass by, and so on. He had just said before that on Monday I spoke about turning to something higher. To realize God, to experience inner joy, to experience beauty, without us having to immediately possess something and have it. We can learn to have this certain independence and of course, regular practices help. When we practice Asanas, a certain satisfaction arises. If there are any desires, one only needs to do a few Sun Salutations; at least the small desires are no longer so important afterwards. And when we reach a depth in meditation, then many other things also become less important. If we then do not feed it with additional, yes, I thoughts, desires come, desires go. If we then still identify with it, it becomes more difficult. And in this sense, it is necessary to detach oneself from it, and what the whole thing is for is to realize God, to realize a higher reality, to experience joy, ultimately to come to true freedom.

Man will dieses und man will jenes.
