The IWC Conference in Hobart has shown that political power interests block the protection of whales and dolphins from targeted hunting and that the oceans are under enormous pressure.

This IWC has unfortunately shown that our oceans continue to be under enormous pressure from political power interests.

The text assesses the results of the IWC Conference in Hobart from Greenpeace's perspective. It criticises the fact that Switzerland prematurely withdrew its own resolution on the protection of dolphins and small whales from targeted hunting. The EU is criticised for not having provided further backing for this proposal. The measures proposed by the EU on bycatch, ship collisions, and strandings could be adopted because they were less controversial and did not specifically address whaling. The whaling moratorium was indeed defended with a large majority, but the meeting did not bring the hoped-for progress. The text claims that the IWC has shown that the oceans continue to be under enormous pressure from political power interests. The core message is a political warning that international bodies are blocked by power interests and that more protection for whales and dolphins is needed.

In addition to the attacks on the moratorium by the whaling lobby, Switzerland in particular played a critical role in Hobart. Despite support, they withdrew their own resolution to protect dolphins and small whales from targeted hunting prematurely. The EU failed to provide this proposal with more backing and support. Their own proposed measures on bycatch, ship collisions, and strandings could be adopted because they were less controversial and did not specifically address whaling. Even though the whaling moratorium was still defended with a large majority, the meeting did not bring the hoped-for and necessary progress.
