The Cradle-to-Cradle concept proves that it is possible to increase prosperity while protecting nature, which is why faith in a better future should not be abandoned.

For there is indeed "hope beyond illusions," as Michael Schmidt-Salomon formulated in his 2014 book "Hoffnung Mensch."

The text promotes the 10th International Cradle-to-Cradle Congress, which will take place in Berlin in September 2026. It introduces the C2C concept, which aims to increase prosperity without destroying nature by closing technological cycles. The Giordano Bruno Foundation supports the C2C NGO because it combines humanism and ecology. The text names prominent supporters and concrete examples, such as the implementation of the concept at concerts by the bands Die Ärzte and Toten Hosen. It emphasizes that C2C is both ecologically sound and economically advantageous. The central message is that a better future is possible and achievable and that one should not give up faith in humanity. The text is aimed at a broad audience and invites participation in the congress.

The future is no longer what it once was. Many people have lost all hope for progress. However, the concept of "Cradle to Cradle" has been proving for many years that it is indeed possible to increase general prosperity without destroying nature. In mid-September, the 10th International C2C Congress will take place, with approximately 1,000 participants expected once again. The Giordano Bruno Foundation has supported the C2C NGO since its founding in 2012, as it combines humanism and ecology in a model way. At the 1st International C2C Congress in 2014 in Lüneburg, gbs board member Michael Schmidt-Salomon already delivered one of the opening lectures; at the 10th anniversary of the congress in Berlin, he will again appear as a "Keynote Speaker" and explain "why a better world is possible and feasible." The concept of "Cradle to Cradle" ("From Cradle to Cradle") aims, through a "smarter metabolism with nature," not only to reduce the "negative ecological footprint of humanity" but to strengthen its "positive footprint." In the meantime, many renowned companies worldwide have adopted the C2C concept because it is not only ecologically sensible but also economically viable, producing "from cradle to cradle" instead of "from cradle to grave," that is: keeping technological cycles closed and not wasting valuable resources. Although C2C was developed in the 1990s by Michael Braungart (gbs advisory board) and William McDonough and was able to win prominent international supporters such as Bill Clinton and Brad Pitt quite soon, the concept was still largely unknown in Germany at the beginning of the 2010s. However, this changed with the C2C NGO, which was founded in 2012 by Nora Sophie Griefahn and Tim Janßen. With its approximately 25 employees and over 1,000 volunteer supporters, the NGO has decisively contributed to C2C being increasingly taken seriously in Germany today. At the annually held congresses (interrupted only by Corona), leading personalities from politics, business, and science regularly meet to work on better solutions for the future. How popular C2C has become here in the meantime is shown, among other things, by the fact that the German rock-pop-punk band "Die Ärzte," in collaboration with the "Toten Hosen," organized several large open-air concerts according to the C2C concept. The patronage of this year's C2C Congress has been taken over by Bettina Hagedorn (Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for the Environment), and the Lower Saxon Prime Minister Olaf Lies will report on the progress his federal state is making in the field of the circular economy. Fun should not be neglected in all of this. Thus, the well-known doctor, cabaretist, and author Eckart von Hirschhausen will ensure that the work on future-proof products and concepts will not be too solemn. However, the center of the congress will be concrete solutions for concrete problems, for example in the fields of electronics, robotics, or the energy sector. All in all, the 10th International C2C Congress – like its predecessors – will show that it is far too early to give up faith in humanity. Anyone who, in view of the multiple crises of the present, believes that a better future cannot exist, should consider participating in this congress to be convinced of the opposite. For there is indeed "Hope Beyond Illusions," as Michael Schmidt-Salomon formulated in his 2014 book "Hope: Human." All information about the 10th International C2C Congress, which the gbs also supports within the framework of its current focus theme "Go Future!", can be found on this website. The "Cradle to Cradle Congress" will take place from 17 to 18 September 2026 at the TU Berlin (Straße des 17. Juni 135, 10623 Berlin, Main Building H) and will be opened on Thursday at 13:00 by Nora Sophie Griefahn and Tim Janßen (managing directors of the C2C NGO). Admission and registration: 12:00–13:00.
