The Discord server "Apostolic Church" is an effective digital platform that connects, informs, and brings together Orthodox Christians and interested parties in the German-speaking area in fraternal community, even though Orthodoxy is affected by internal tensions.

It is striking that, at a time when a serious rift unfortunately runs through Orthodoxy, Orthodox Christians and catechumens from all the Orthodox dioceses present in Germany meet on this platform and speak with one another.

The text describes the German-language Discord server "Apostolic Church" as a digital platform for information and networking on Byzantine Orthodoxy. It explains that the server originated in the gaming environment but now includes 974 members aged 14 to 72 and is supported by a moderated, ecumenical-Orthodox community. The server offers libraries, PDF resources, chats, prayer requests, Orthodox news, daily forms of prayer, Church Fathers readings, and bots. It emphasizes that Orthodox Christians and catechumens from different Orthodox dioceses come together, while Orthodoxy as a whole is affected by a "serious rift." The text refers to the blessing of Metropolitan Isaac (Barakat) and to the participation of priests as well as a theologian. It highlights the role of the server for young, rural-dwelling interested parties who have little access to a parish. Finally, the "fraternal atmosphere" is supported by user quotations and a quotation from Tertullian.

Skip to content To learn about Orthodoxy, many people use the internet. This interest is served, from the Orthodox side in the German-speaking area, by several platforms and websites such as the Orthodox Forum, the discussion forum of the DOM (only for members of the DOM), Orthodox Unity, and Orthodoxy in Germany, to name just a few. Younger interested parties also access information about Orthodoxy through servers that were originally set up for playing online games together. A vivid example is the Discord server “Apostolic Church” with 974 members (as of 06.03.25) aged between 14 and 72 years. Here, the name discord, which means “discord” in English, and the self-designation, Apostolic Church, which brings to mind the Armenian Apostolic Church, may initially be misleading. For it is indeed a server that informs about Byzantine Orthodoxy, and its loving but consistent moderation tries to prevent discord from arising in the first place. In doing so, it essentially follows what is called “(Lay) Apostolate” in the Roman Catholic sphere, namely the mandate of all believers to proclaim the Gospel and spread the faith, according to the word of Jesus to the disciples and apostles: “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation!” (Mk 16:15). In the Orthodox context, the term “Apostolate” is best translated as “apostolic ministry” (ἀποστολική διακονία) and thereby perhaps clarified. The server accomplishes this in various ways, including: – a small library that leads to further Orthodox websites – easily understandable resources in PDF form on central topics of Orthodoxy – a continuous general chat and chats for small as well as large groups – a thread for discussions – user questions, which are gladly used by those interested in Orthodoxy – prayer intentions, which are read aloud at the end of each week – Orthodox news, which predominantly come from orthodoxnews.de – a daily offering of forms of prayer, from the Church’s Divine Office to the Prayer of the Heart (this is particularly aimed at those who do not yet know it and can only with difficulty reach a parish) – readings from the Church Fathers, most recently from the book of Starets Siluan – various bots that have been appropriately “fed” to answer questions on Orthodox topics or to display Bible verses upon specifying the reference It is notable that in a time when, unfortunately, a deep rift runs through Orthodoxy, Orthodox believers and catechumens from all Orthodox dioceses present in Germany meet and speak with one another on this platform. This reflects, on a small scale, the team of moderators and intercessors, whose members currently come from the Greek Orthodox and the Antiochian Orthodox diocese and from the Russian Orthodox dioceses. Since the owner of the server with the nickname 𝐽𝑒𝑠𝑢𝑠𝐿𝑖𝑒𝑏𝑡𝐸𝑢𝑐ℎ33☦ is active in an Antiochian Orthodox parish, he requested and received on 8.11.2024 the blessing of his Metropolitan Isaac (Barakat). In addition, two priests, an Antiochian Orthodox one (𝔘𝔯𝔱𝔢𝔦𝔩𝔢 𝔫𝔦𝔠𝔥𝔱!) and a Georgian Orthodox one, contribute their knowledge and willingness to offer comfort and advice in partly humanly and ecclesiastically complex situations to the community, as well as a graduate of the Orthodox theological degree program in Munich. In the background, the server is further supported by the Russian Orthodox Father Alexej Veselov, who is known not only for his wonderful explanatory videos on Orthodox topics, but overall for his excellent media work in German-speaking Orthodoxy: Many non-Orthodox people also find themselves on the server. Not a few of them, who write in the chat or answer user questions with great enthusiasm, are under 18 and want to become Orthodox. Often, if they live in rural areas, real contact with the nearest Orthodox community is hardly possible due to a lack of a driver’s license or poor public transport connections. Nevertheless, they constantly encourage the moderators to definitely seek them out, as well as to seek conversation with a local priest. For them, the server is thus a rarely available opportunity to easily engage in conversation with Orthodox people of their age. As in any virtual format, occasionally young overzealous individuals with a certain inclination toward radicalism and an absolute claim to truth can be found on the server, a claim that is not supported either by their knowledge or by the actual church teaching. The experienced moderators keep this in view in order to prevent further radicalization, which can easily occur via the internet, in advance. In the worst case, one must part ways in God’s love, which has already led to the founding of— from the perspective of the zealots— “competing servers.” That not everything takes place in the virtual space is shown by occasional real-life meetings, where individual users of the server meet each other for the Divine Liturgy and for exchange afterwards. In addition, there are networks at the level of the federal states. At the end of his introductory video for the “Apostolic Church,” Alexej poses the important question: How can one recognize that the channel is Orthodox? He quotes the Lord’s words: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). In the fraternal climate on the server, there is much of this “love for one another,” as is finally evidenced by several user statements from recent times, which are listed under the category “Praise” (there is also one for “Criticism”): User S. on 18.12.24: “I am very satisfied with the server. You can tell that everyone helps everyone as well as they can. You have grown close to my heart. Also, the offer for prayer events and Bible readings is great. Unfortunately, I almost never manage to participate, but it makes me happy that the possibility exists and I give very high praise for the fact that the offer is growing and growing.” User t. on 09.12.24: “Honestly, thank you that I am allowed to be on this server, so many differences but yet unity as one in Christ. Exciting especially to see how people view and understand things when questions arise.” Or briefly and concisely, user 𝕴. on 18.11.24: “Everything is super[,] it is fun[,] and this server has grown very close to my heart [= very, youth slang]!” Does this not remind one of the words of the pagans about the Christians, which Tertullian recorded in 198 AD: “See how they love one another” (On the Apology 39 (BKV); Lat. Apologeticum 39,7)? Addendum: On 23.03.25, the Union of Orthodox Journalists also published a worthwhile article on orthodoxnews.de under the title “A Digital Home for Orthodox Christians in the German-speaking Area” about the Discord server Apostolic Church.
