The Church is apostolic because it rests on the personal, individually named witness of the apostles and their successors, and each individual is placed by name into this community of witnesses in the Holy Spirit.

Each individual is important. God acts, yes, it is his history of salvation, but he does so in "cooperation" with people who are strengthened by his Spirit and may participate in his grace.

The sermon takes up Acts 1:12–14 and emphasizes that in the list of the names of the apostles and Mary the individual is highlighted as an important member of the Church. The text sets the biblical list of names against the genealogy in the Gospel of Luke and interprets the Church as a community of witnesses in the Holy Spirit, not as a mere collective. Apostolicity is identified in the apostles' candles, the naming of the pope and bishop in the Eucharistic Prayer, and apostolic succession. In the Regensburg context, the 750th anniversary of the Gothic cathedral and the burial of Bishop Manfred Müller in the newly created episcopal burial ground are interpreted as a placement within the foundation of the local Church. The name is presented as a sign of dignity, vocation, and belonging to God, from baptism to the gravestone. The sermon concludes with a Pentecostal prayer for the renewed descent of the Holy Spirit, for purification, joy, and witness.

18.05.2026 20260517_P_7.So_Ostzt_A_MMüller.docx 1 Sermon for the 7th Sunday in Eastertide, Cycle A, with annual commemorations for Bishop Manfred Müller on the 11th anniversary of his death (May 20, 2015) Dear sisters and brothers in the Lord! The reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1:12–14) that we have just heard leads us today, on the Sunday between the Ascension of Christ and Pentecost, to the origin of the Church, to an origin that certainly always accompanies us and stands before us as an example and a claim. The apostles are gathered with Mary in the upper room – identified by the Church from time immemorial with the Last Supper room – in expectation of the promised Holy Spirit, in prayer for the sending of the Spirit of Truth, who will remind them of all things, who will lead them more deeply into the mystery of Christ. If one looks more closely at the reading, one notices, and you will have noticed it too, that it consists largely simply of names. Yes, the Evangelist Luke, to whom we also owe the Acts of the Apostles, picks up at the beginning of the Acts of the Apostles the list of the names of the apostles, which he had already transmitted in connection with the calling of the apostles by Jesus Christ (Luke 6:14–16), he takes up this list and names each individual name again, only the name of Judas Iscariot, the betrayer, is understandably omitted. Mary is also named explicitly. This is not unimportant, but shows a very essential feature of biblical proclamation. Each individual is important. God acts, yes, it is his history of salvation, but he does so in “cooperation” with people who are strengthened by his Spirit and may participate in his grace. 18.05.2026 20260517_P_7.So_Ostzt_A_MMüller.docx 2 Above all Mary, who through her word of yes made possible the Incarnation of God, the apostles and ultimately each and every one of us. With the apostles, of course, the collective of the Twelve is what matters. The apostles are the founding fathers of the new people of God. The people of the Old Covenant was built upon the 12 sons of Jacob (Israel). The new people of God also rests on founding fathers in this symbolic number. Therefore, immediately following this pericope, the election of Matthias is reported (cf. Acts 1:15–26). For in the origin, the number of Twelve must be intact. But of these Twelve, each individual is important. And so each name is mentioned. Also at the beginning of the Gospel of Luke, a list of names is presented (Luke 3:23–38). There, in the third chapter, before the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, it is a genealogy. A lineage that places Jesus in the context of humanity and leads back to Adam, the father of the human race. At the beginning of Church history there is no longer a genealogy, no relationship of descent, but a community of witnesses. Blood kinship is no longer decisive, but the communion in the Holy Spirit, which enables the witness for Christ. This witness is a personal one, which cannot hide behind an anonymous – that is, nameless – collective such as a synod. The personal witness, which in the case of most apostles – the exception being only Saint John – became a witness of blood, contributed significantly to the spread of faith. The persecution for the sake of the “name of Christ,” of which the apostle Peter speaks in the second reading (1 Peter 4:12), ultimately led to the opposite goal, namely the spread of the Good News, which was authenticated by the witness of the apostles and many Christian women and men. 18.05.2026 20260517_P_7.So_Ostzt_A_MMüller.docx 3 The Church is in this sense apostolic, essential, we will sing it later in the Creed: ... et unam, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam ecclesiam. That is why the apostle candles in the parish churches are also important to me, at which the bishop expresses the apostolicity of the Church during the consecration of the church by the anointing of the associated apostle stones. The spiritual house of the Church rests on the testimony of the 12 Apostles. The beginning goes with. And therefore, in every celebration of the Mass, the names of the Pope and the Bishop are mentioned in the Eucharistic Prayer as an expression of the unity of the Church with its origin and in the worldwide communion of the episcopally constituted particular churches with their visible head, the Pope in Rome. This is not a cult of personality within the Church, but an expression of the belief in the Church united in Christ, which presupposes personal witness. Dear sisters and brothers! This year we are celebrating 750 years of the Gothic cathedral in Regensburg. The last major renovation of the cathedral in the 1980s fell within the tenure of Bishop Manfred, initiated and supported, of course, by the cathedral chapter, but it is indeed the bishop’s church, the cathedral of the Bishop of Regensburg. Among the elements of the renovation was, last but not least, the creation of the crypt as the burial place for bishops. After his predecessor Rudolf Graber, Manfred Müller was buried as the second in the newly created bishop’s crypt in the Regensburg Cathedral and thus inserted into the foundation of the Church of Regensburg. We will later pray at his grave, give thanks for his work, and pray that God, the Creator and Redeemer, accepts his service and his testimony and perfects him in his glory. And we will also see in the crypt the list of the bishops of the Church of Regensburg carved in stone, not 18.05.2026 20260517_P_7.So_Ostzt_A_MMüller.docx 4 a genealogy of descent, but a spiritual genealogy, the apostolic succession in the succession of the Apostles with the mandate to bear witness to the Gospel. The name of Manfred Müller, he was already present during his lifetime as the name of a school, the Bishop Manfred Müller School, a hallmark for a forward-looking educational concept that organically integrates faith into all school subjects and thus roots it in the lives of children and young people. Dear sisters and brothers, yes, our Christian faith looks to the individual, his dignity, his vocation, his name. At Baptism, the name is called, at Confirmation, the name is called, in the holy orders. And the name is also on the tombstone. An anonymous burial is unthinkable from our Christian premises, for if God knows us by name, then our name also deserves earthly recognition. We are baptized in the name of the triune God. And he has written our names into his hand, into his heart. We belong to him. Decisive, however, for the work of the bishop is what Jesus says about himself in the Upper Room (cf. John 17, 1–11a). He passed on the words of his Father to us. He did not speak from himself, but he received everything from the Father. The bishop and the proclaimers of the Gospel are not the authors of faith; faith is not their invention; they do not proclaim themselves, but they are witnesses of the crucified and risen Lord, who called them by name and in whose service they have placed themselves, and to whom the Spirit of God was given in ordination for full-power witness. 18.05.2026 20260517_P_7.So_Ostzt_A_MMüller.docx 5 And so we want to pray in these days before Pentecost with the whole Church that the Holy Spirit may come down again today, that he may touch the Church anew; that he may let the light of God shine forth again in her, that he may deliver her from weariness and distress and grant her again his full radiance. Let us pray for all of us that he may come into our hearts, which were touched by him in Baptism and Confirmation, that he may also become in us the power of purification and renewal, that the flame of joy may once again enter into us, through which we all become witnesses of the Good News of salvation. Amen.

18.05.2026 20260517_P_7.So_Ostzt_A_MMüller.docx 1 Predigt zum 7. Sonntag in der Osterzeit, A, mit Jahresgedenken für Bischof Manfred Müller zum 11. Todestag (20. Amen.
