Winter is the ideal time for believers to master their souls and prepare for the Hereafter through fasting, prayer, and familial solidarity.

The text uses the seasons as a metaphor for the phases of human life, with winter depicted as a time of preparation for the Hereafter. It refers to Quranic passages and hadiths that call on people to perceive nature as a sign of God and to master their own souls. The sermon emphasizes that winter is a time of fasting and prayer for believers, since the short days and long nights facilitate these practices. It calls for the cold season to be used as an opportunity for spiritual deepening and familial solidarity. The listeners are encouraged to make their houses places of peace and prayer, rather than viewing them merely as waystations. The text connects external observation of nature with inner spiritual work and preparation for death.

What Do the Seasons Tell Us? (21.11.2025) Have you ever consciously observed your surroundings on your way here? Have you noticed the trees with their fallen leaves? Have you looked at the sun, the moon, the rain-laden clouds, the flowers, the birds, or the increasingly cold weather and reflected upon them? Allah, our exalted Creator, reveals: "And there are surely signs in the heavens and the earth for those who believe, and there is a sign in their own creation and in the beasts that are dispersed, for a people who are certain." [1] Beloved brothers and sisters! Honored believers! Each of us possesses the ability to recognize the signs that our exalted Lord has created. Yet in the bustle of the world, we sometimes overlook these indications and fail to notice the many wisdoms that we pass by heedlessly. There are so many signs around us waiting to be read; so many lessons that invite reflection, and so many wonders that call us to contemplation… Let us therefore resolve from today onward to perceive, recognize, read, and draw lessons from the signs of Allah in nature. For, dear believers! When a person truly wishes to learn from them, he recognizes great wisdoms even in the smallest of creatures. He learns from a flower and from the bee that flies from blossom to blossom. He draws lessons from the bird that soars in the sky and from the leaf that falls to the ground. This order in nature, filled with wisdom, contains lessons that can serve as a guide for man. The life of man is like the four seasons. Childhood is the spring of life: fresh, lively, and full of hope. That is why man in old age often longs for his childhood. Youth is like summer: a time full of strength, energy, and enthusiasm. Old age reminds one of autumn: the knees no longer bear as they once did, the eyes no longer see as clearly, and the hearing diminishes. And death is like winter: just as the leaves wither and fall to the ground, so too does man one day return to the earth. Our exalted Lord points out in the Noble Quran that the seemingly "dead" earth in winter is brought back to life in spring, and says: "And a sign for them is the dead earth (…)[2] Thus the believer who observes nature with this awareness loves both summer and winter. Both spring and autumn. Beloved brothers and sisters! We are in the last days of autumn; a long winter lies before us. Just as we prepare for the coming winter, we should also prepare for our journey to the Hereafter. The Prophet of Mercy (s) said: "The wise man is the one who restrains his soul/his ego and works for the Hereafter."[3] With this, he reminds us that our most important preparation should be for the Hereafter. In another hadith, our Prophet (s) compares winter to the "spring of the believer" and draws attention to the fact that the short days are best suited for fasting and the long nights are ideal for the ritual prayer.[4] Let us therefore draw inspiration from these words and make winter an opportunity for us and our families. Let us transform the cold days into a time of mercy in which our hearts grow warm. Let us not make our houses into hotel rooms that we leave in the morning and only enter in the evening, tired, but into places where we talk with our family, share our concerns, and build bridges from heart to heart. Let us transform our homes into small libraries where reading takes place; into small prayer rooms where prayer is offered together. Let us strive with all our might to transform our houses into gardens of peace, love, and happiness. The DITIB Sermon Commission [1] Quran, Yusuf, 12/105. [2] Quran, Yasin, 36/33. [2] Koran, Yasin, 36/33.
