Assembly of the Archdiocese of Canada: Banquet Remarks
Tradition does not consist in the mere transmission of information, but in communal eating and storytelling that binds the community across generations and continues the divine gift of the manna.
God feeds his people first and only then asks them to tell the story of having been fed.
The text reflects on the etymological and theological significance of the word 'banquet' as communal eating on a bench, which overcomes divisions. It links this to the biblical image of the manna and the Pauline tradition of the Eucharist, in order to define tradition as the passing on of a shared table. The central thesis is that the Church transmits not primarily information, but the experience of communal eating and storytelling. The speaker emphasises the duty to retell what has been experienced to subsequent generations, in order to keep the hope in God alive. At the end he addresses those present at the Assembly of the Archbishops of Canada and calls on them to understand the shared meal as an act of thanksgiving and witness. The text celebrates the community and the continuity of faith across generations.
