Maintaining the ZEV mandate is essential to address the climate and economic crises and to ensure energy security.

Any watering down of this policy would be a wrong turn for drivers, energy security, our climate and the economy.

The text is a statement by Greenpeace UK on the planned amendment of the ZEV mandate by the British government. The spokesperson describes any weakening of this policy as a wrong turn for drivers, energy security, climate and the economy. The lower maintenance costs of electric vehicles and the independence from foreign oil are cited as arguments. The market for electric vehicles is described as booming worldwide. Current events such as the Iran war and extreme weather conditions are mentioned as evidence for the necessity of reducing fossil fuels. The ZEV mandate is presented as one of the most effective policies for reducing planet-warming emissions. Finally, the government is urged not to jeopardise its promises on the cost of living crisis and industrialisation by holding back the green economy.

Commenting on the government consultation on changing the ZEV mandate published today, Greenpeace UK’s head of politics Ami McCarthy (they/them) said: “Any watering down of this policy would be a wrong turn for drivers, energy security, our climate and the economy. Electric vehicles are way cheaper to run than petrol and diesel cars, they don’t need foreign oil and the market is booming worldwide. Both the Iran war and this summer’s extreme weather have shown once again why we’re better off cutting our dependence on fossil fuels. This mandate is one of the most powerful policies we have to bring down planet-heating emissions, which is the only way to stop more deadly heatwaves in future. Burnham can’t fulfil his promise of tackling the cost of living crisis and reindustrialising Britain without the green economy. So why put on the brakes now?” ENDS Contact: Greenpeace UK press team on 020 7865 8255 and press.uk@greenpeace.org
