The federal government must respond to the consequences of the climate crisis by convening a heat summit, incorporating heat protection into disaster management on a binding basis, and reliably funding climate protection and climate adaptation.

The federal government must act now and initiate concrete measures through a heat summit.

The text brings together three statements from associations and organizations that, following renewed extreme heat events, are calling for a heat summit by the federal government. The Climate Alliance Germany emphasizes that heat waves strain daily life, health, and the economy, and calls for reliable frameworks for municipalities as well as an accelerated energy transition. The Workers' Samaritan Union warns of the overloading of emergency services and emergency rooms and demands that heat protection be incorporated into emergency plans and disaster management on a binding basis. The Paritätische Gesamtverband points to the limits of capacity in social institutions such as care homes, daycare centers, and counseling centers, which lack staff, suitable buildings, shading, and cooling. All three speakers call on the federal government to provide funds for climate protection and climate adaptation and to correct course. The text links the concrete everyday consequences of heat to political demands for the financing, planning, and implementation of protective measures. The present-day relevance is immediate: current heat waves, economic damage, medical overload, and social bottlenecks are named as urgent reasons for action.

Stefanie Langkamp, Political Executive Director of the Climate Alliance Germany, states: "Every heatwave makes it clear that the climate crisis directly burdens our daily lives, our health, and our economic prosperity. The last heatwave alone has caused billions of dollars in damages to businesses. The federal government must act now and initiate concrete measures through a heat summit. Municipalities now need reliable framework conditions to be able to implement heat protection on the ground. This requires a joint task for climate protection and climate adaptation so that municipalities have the funds to act reliably. In parallel, we must significantly accelerate the domestic energy transition to permanently make Germany independent of expensive oil and gas imports." Dr. Uwe Martin Fichtmüller, Chief Executive Officer of the German Workers' Samaritan Order e.V., states: "The federal government must finally treat extreme heat as an acute danger to public health. On hot days, emergency services and emergency rooms in many places are in constant operation: emergency personnel care for dehydrated people and bring patients to heavily strained hospitals. In order for our medical care to remain stable, the federal and state governments must mandatorily incorporate heat protection into emergency plans and disaster protection, specifically relieve emergency personnel, and at the same time act much more consistently on climate protection." Katja Kipping, Executive Director, The Paritätische Gesamtverband: "Social institutions now need targeted support to cope with the consequences of extreme heat. Nursing homes, daycare centers, and counseling centers are increasingly reaching their limits. In many places, there is a lack of personnel, suitable buildings, shading, and cooling to effectively protect particularly vulnerable people. Organizational and low-investment heat protection measures are no longer sufficient during prolonged extreme heatwaves. The institutions cannot bear the investments for structural measures on their own. The federal government must therefore correct its course: Instead of using funds from the Climate and Transformation Fund for other purposes, it must reliably finance socially just climate protection and climate adaptation. Whoever saves at this point exacerbates the burdens for precisely those people and institutions that are already suffering particularly strongly from the consequences of the climate crisis today."
