Holy Scripture is the only reliable means of recognizing false teaching, building up the church, and attaining salvation through Jesus Christ.

The only way and the only possibility by which you can stand up against false teachers, by being able to know what is wrong and what is right, is when you read and study the Bible for yourself.

The sermon text deals with 2 Timothy 3:16 and places the authority of Holy Scripture as the foundation for salvation, teaching, and church planting in the foreground. Using the example of Timothy, it is shown that the early childhood transmission of biblical texts by his grandmother and mother played a foundational role in his faith. Paul's letters to Timothy are understood as guidance for spiritual leadership, in which the Word of God is the standard against false teachers. The speaker applies the message to the present by calling on parents to raise their children through biblical instruction and encouraging believers to read the Bible and pray daily. Social media and the internet are named as potentially misleading sources of information that should be replaced by personal Bible reading and prayer. The church is understood as a community that is set apart and strengthened through the Word of God.

[sneezing] Many people thought that we would begin with Exodus today, but we still have another chapter 3, verse 16 this morning, which we will look at and also next week. We will probably begin with the second book of Moses in October. We have already looked at John 3 verse 16, for God, so for so greatly did God love the world. So, hopefully you all know the verse by heart. If you don't know it, then go, then you have something to do. 1 Corinthians 3, verse 16. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? Colossians 3, verse 16. Let the word of Christ richly dwell in you in all wisdom. Teach and admonish one another and sing with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to the Lord. Delightfully in your hearts. [sneezing] Last week we dealt with 2 Timothy 3, verse 16 and acknowledged, great is the mystery of godliness. God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. So the truth, the gospel, that is so important. And my hope is that these wonderful verses from the Bible, that they are helpful in instructing your head and your heart in how one can be obedient to Christ. Not only that it is important for you, that it instructs you and helps you, but that you have them ready to help others, to support others, to instruct others. If I ask someone, how do I know that God loves me? Then you simply just think 3 verse 16. Is it Matthew or is it Mark? No, it is John. It is John 3 verse 16. Hopefully that helps you to move forward. Especially if it is difficult for you to learn by heart. So I know people for whom it is very easy to learn the core of a Bible verse by heart, but they say, I don't know at all where it is found. Somewhere it is in there. So remember. 316. There are a few good passages there. Today we go into the second epistle to Timothy chapter 3, verse 16. And that is so good. The context of the second epistle to Timothy, it is the last letter of the apostle Paul. He had written the first epistle to Timothy to Timothy, who was then there in Ephesus. He hoped that he would be released from prison and that he could go visit him. But in the second epistle to Timothy we then find out that he will not make it. At the end of the second epistle to Timothy, Paul is beheaded. But Paul called this young man a son in the faith. In the Acts of the Apostles, Acts of the Apostles we find out in chapter 16, verse 1, there we read how Paul encountered Timothy. He had a Jewish mother and a Greek father, but he grew up being instructed in what Paul calls the Holy Scriptures. Jesus. And because you have known the Holy [clearing throat] Scriptures from childhood, which are able to make you wise for salvation through the faith which is in Christ Jesus, that we read in 2 Timothy 3, verse 15. Where did he already know these Holy Scriptures from his childhood? And we know that from the second Timothy chapter 1, verse 5. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. I am but convinced also in you. So both Timothy's grandmother and his mother both had a sincere genuine faith. They had [sneezing] their faith anchored in the Holy Scriptures. So much faith in these Holy Scriptures, that is to us, as it is told to us here in 2 Timothy 3, verse 15, that from the age when he was a very small child, a very small child, a toddler, a baby, they had already read the Scriptures to baby Timothy. That is the word of God. That is the way. That is the lamp for my feet and a light on my path. There is one God, one Creator. He is the God of Jacob and Isaac and Abraham, Jacob and Isaac. Isaac. Yes. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. [laughter] Ripe. He grew up with this taken-for-granted fact that the holy Scriptures come from God. And that led him to the realization that Jesus is the promised Messiah. It was not the knowledge or the memorization of the Bible that saved him, but the holy Scriptures made him wise concerning salvation through Jesus Christ. as parents. That is what we do in children's church. That is what you hopefully also do at home as parents, that you raise your children by putting the Bible into them. That is the Word of God. That is the truth. That is God's revelation. And it reveals to us that God loves us. Although we are sinners and separated, he came into this world. He lived a perfect, flawless life. He spoke the true Word of God. He made promises and he made proclamations. He revealed himself. He died and rose again and now sits at the right hand of his Father with all power and all authority. And then you give this, this Bible study, you tell your ten-month-old child about it and your ten-year-old child too, then your twenty-year-old, and you keep pointing them back to it, so that they become wise through the Scriptures, in order to, in order to attain salvation through Jesus Christ. So when Paulus found the young Timothy, he told him: "Listen, buddy, you're coming with me." He became a very important part and a very helpful part of Paul's ministry. Not only because he knew the Bible, but because he knew the God of the Bible. Paul once said: "No one, no one, no one cares more about the church than I do, except [snort] Timothy too." Timothy shared Paul's heart for God's church. Timothy is in Ephesus, if you remember, a place where, as Paul was on his way to Jerusalem, he stopped there and gathered the Ephesian elders, the elders of the Ephesians, and they essentially had a small pastors' conference. He calls them together to encourage them, to also tell him, listen, look at my example. And be prepared for people who either come from outside or also from within to do harm to the church. We read here his exhortation to the elders in Acts 20, verses 26 to 32. 26 to 32. Therefore I testify to you this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men, for I have not hidden from you the whole counsel of God. Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which he purchased with his own blood. For I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves will men arise who speak perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears. And now, brethren, I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Paul says here, I know exactly that there are people who will come to destroy the church. He says, I know exactly that there will be people within the church there who will then stand up and say, I want you to follow me. I have a teaching, I have a, a sermon, a thing that I want to take, so that the people surround me and follow me. And Paul tells you very clearly and distinctly, you must do this. You must do what I have done. Hold nothing back. Teach everything that is in the Word of God. Instruct, teach, exhort, encourage, and he says this to him because he says exactly this, so the church will be established, so it will grow, so it will also continue on. When you then read the first and second epistle to Timothy, then we see how Paulus speaks about this this sand, what he has received, the gospel. It was entrusted to me and I also want you to receive it that way. It is entrusted to you, to make you faithful men. To Timothy he speaks as to a pastor, from one as a spiritual leader. Be careful, give great importance to the Scripture and to the teaching. That is the only way you can survive. In particular, where in Timothy it was most likely a young man and [snort] that brought some problems with it and I also had a lot of fear in this regard when we moved here to Düsseldorf. I did youth work for many years and now all of a sudden I was supposed to stand before people and speak who were much older than me, who had much more experience than I did, who perhaps also knew much more than I did. What did I have to bring them? It is the Word of God and that is why Paulus emphasizes the Word of God here for Timothy very particularly. He does not bring up the topic of faith, but he keeps bringing up the topic of the one faith, that the whole teaching, the whole written teaching, that that is the core piece. Timothy was not to be afraid of false teachers, but he had to be strong in order to be able to stand up against false teachings as well. False teachings that want to pull people away from Christ. Therefore never give up, never yield. But what is the standard? What do we rely on when we want to have a healthy church and healthy believers? What has God given us for that? He has given us his Word. Jesus in his high priestly prayer in John 17. Yes, in John 17 in the high priestly prayer of Jesus up to verse 14 it says: "I have given them your word and the world hates them, because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth. Jesus says: "So will my church be set apart. So will it be through your word. Your word is truth. Church, listen well. The only way and the only possibility by which you can stand up against false teachers, by which you can know what is wrong and what is right, is when you read and study the Bible for yourself. Listen, praise God for the internet. We can pull a lot of information out of it. There are a lot of teachers on it. Paulus already said back then, you have many teachers, but you have only one father. On the internet you can find what you want. Even Chat GPT will tell you things that you perhaps want to hear, but which by no means have to correspond to the truth. If you want to know God, if you want to get to know his heart and his truth, there is no other possibility than that you open this book. Media, turn off your social media. Turn on the television, turn on the radio and spend time with it by reading the Bible. It sounds so basic, but so many Christians do not do that. Read, read, read the Bible and pray every day. [laughter] So read the Bible and pray every day. That way you will not be conformed to this world, but you will be renewed by your mind. That way you will gain victory over the enemy. It says there that it is the sword of the Spirit to you. That way you grow. Peter expressed it in such a way that we have the pure, the pure milk of the gospel they are to absorb, so that we can grow. Again and again and again. And you might say to yourself: "Ah, that's hard, I don't understand it." Just keep reading. Ask God, God help me. Lord, teach me. And He wants to do that. He gives pastors and He gives teachers, but no one else has authority over your life, over your growth but God and His Word. That is why we open the Bible, that is why we teach in the Scripture. That is why we also keep referring to Bible verses there. So in the past we also handed out Bibles before every Sunday. Who still needs a Bible? We want you to understand that I am not the authority, but that the Scripture is the authority. Test what I say against the Word of God and not the other way around. And that is exactly what Paul says here to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3, verse 16 and also verse 17, because that completes the line of thought here. All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. So, so good. So good. [snort] It says here that the Holy Scripture makes us wise for salvation in Jesus Christ. And now it tells us here that all Scripture, all Scripture brings about that we can become mature, prepared, equipped for every good work. That is to become a Christian life and then to be set apart by His truth, that we grow in wisdom, that we grow in knowledge, that we are transformed. The Holy Bible, the Holy Scriptures and the Holy Spirit. They equip us and prepare us for everything we are to do. That is powerful. That is why Paul says from Timothy here. That is what you need. That is, that is what the elders, that is what the church in Ephesus. Christians have always needed that up to the point where Jesus returns. Which Scriptures? 3:16 Scriptures. No, all, all Scriptures. All Scripture, so it says here, is God-breathed. It comes from God. God breath. Literally it says in the Greek, breathed out by God. It comes directly from Him to us. In Luke 24, I love that. There Jesus says to His disciples, because they did not understand that Jesus had to die and be raised from the dead. And He says, and Jesus says to His disciples the following in verse 44 and 45 in Luke 24. But He said to them: "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." Then He opened their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures. Jesus refers to this here and says, the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms, those are the Scriptures. And He opened their minds and gave them the understanding for it, that these Scriptures, it was they that pointed to Him and referred to Him, and that can also be our prayer when we begin in the Old Testament soon. Lord Jesus, open my mind to me, so that I can see You in the Scripture. [snort] Very interesting is that Peter tells us, [clears throat] that also the letters of the apostle Paul belong to the Scripture. Listen to the following, and that is 2 Peter 3, uh, 15 to 16. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things. In some of which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as also the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. What he is saying is nothing other than that there are people out there who simply distort the Scriptures. And he says here, they do the same thing with the letters of Paul. He is telling here the letters of Paul to the Old Testament writings. Peter himself knew that too, that the Old Testament writings had been inspired by the Holy Spirit. One, uh, we read verses 20 and 21, he says, knowing this first that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation. Prophecy never came [snort]. He himself wrote that in Second Peter, chapter 1, verses 20 and 21. Above all, you should know this, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. It was not as if God said, "I will now speak to Jeremiah, and here is what you should write down now." Jeremiah began to write. So, I believe the following is what God was trying to tell me. I'll just write this down now, so that whoever it was that wanted to say it. No, but he says here that the prophets were driven by the Holy Spirit, that it was exactly what he wanted to be written down. It is inspired by God. Paul exhorts the Thessalonians to the effect that they should truly receive the word as the word of God. First Thessalonians 2, chapter 2, verse 16, 13, 2, verse 13. For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is also at work in you who believe. While Paul was preaching the gospel, while he was teaching the word of God, the Thessalonians said that they received it as a word of God directed to them. And while they believed in God and his word, it changed them, it transformed them. We see, then, that both the Old Testament and the New Testament are established as the word of God. In fact, Jesus told his disciples in John 14 the following. He says to them: "Listen, you have the Old Testament, you now have my words, but there are things I still want to tell you that you cannot yet receive, but I will give you the Holy Spirit, and he will bring to your remembrance all the things I have told you." So he knew that the New Testament letters, not only those of Paul, but also of the other disciples, that they were inspired, were inspired by the Holy Spirit. Listen. John 14, verse 26. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. [snort] And listen, John 16, verses 13 and 14. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. That is the assurance that Jesus gave us, that we have a trustworthy Old Testament, just as a trustworthy New Testament, that the teachings that have been given to us, that have handed down the faith to us, that have been handed down once for all to the saints. Exactly. Exactly what Jude also testifies to in Jude 3. Beloved, while I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I felt the need to write and exhort you to contend fervently for the faith that was once for all handed down to the saints. [snort] Listen, this is so important. Even from the early times, from the early period of the church, people have tried to add something to the revelation of God. They have tried to present themselves as an authority that in nothing falls short of Scripture. And listen, Jude, Jude tells us here that this faith, this Scripture was handed down once for all to the saints. Okay, in Right now there is this movement called the New Apostolic Reformation. It is part of what Bill Johnson and all those connected to him are doing. There is this belief that in the last days, that God in the last days has caused a whole group of apostles to rise up. [clears throat] Not only do they equate themselves with the apostle Paul, but they even place themselves partially above the apostle Paul. And the things that they receive from God, you simply must not question them. They come from God, that is what they are, they present themselves as apostles, they have authority. One, if you want to be part of the great awakening, the end times, and if you want to have a share in it, then you must submit to them. What do we do about that? We go back to the Bible. No, thank you. And we then say no, thank you. If anyone wants to establish themselves as God's authority in your life, it doesn't matter whether that is some institution, some denomination, some pastor, some teacher, no one has the authority to tell you what is true. Except God and His Word. We need to summarize this now, we need to look and examine ourselves, for what is the Scripture good for, it is all good for teaching. Therefore we know the truth about God, about creation, about people, about sin, about salvation, about sanctification, about the future, about heaven, about glory, about children, about sexuality, whatever it is, it is written here. And there we go to find truth. All Scripture is God-breathed and useful for instruction, for conviction. It shows us the things that are displeasing to God, not pleasing to God. So, that is how the Scripture reveals what is wrong. It is useful for correction. It shows us not only what is wrong, but also shows us what is right. So many passages in the Bible that do that. Think about Ephesians 4. He

Also erinnert euch dran. 31. Lehrt alles, was im Worte Gottes steht. Deswegen niemals aufgeben, niemals nachgeben. Was hat Gott uns dafür gegeben? Er hat uns sein Wort gegeben. Jesus in seinem hochpriesterlichen Gebet in Johannes 17. Im Internet kannst du finden, was du willst. So wächst du. Li einfach weiter. Bitte Gott, Gott hilf mir. Herr, unterweise mich. So, so good. So gut. Petrus selbst wusste das auch, dass die alttestamentarischen Schriften eingegeben worden war durch waren durch den Heiligen Geist. one uh we read verses 20 and 21 he says knowing this first that no prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation prophecy never came [schnauben] selbst hat das geschrieben im zweiten Petrus in Kapitel 1 Verse 20 und 21.
