Those who speak of 'protection of life' must also mean the living, who are already born and want to make self-determined decisions about their body and their life.

When they speak of the protection of life, then they must also protect the lives of people who are already born.

The text reports on a day of action for sexual self-determination in Berlin, which took place as a counter-event to a demonstration by the Federal Association for the Right to Life. Several speakers addressed the restriction of women's rights in various countries, the danger posed by political developments in Germany, and the importance of self-determined decisions about one's own body. Kerstin Augener, a gynecologist, emphasized that women did not want to be told by religious or right-conservative groups how to live their lives. Kalle Hümpfner referred to the success of the Self-Determination Act for trans* people. The speakers warned of the consequences of an AfD election victory in Saxony-Anhalt and pointed to international examples in which right-wing parties have restricted women's rights. The central message is that 'protection of life' must also mean the living, who are already born and want to live self-determined lives.

on site Action Day for Sexual Self-Determination Those who speak of "protection of life" must also mean the living Since 2008, the Federal Association for the Right to Life has called annually for a demonstration in Berlin, at which radical abortion opponents, so-called "life protectors," spread their mostly religiously veiled ideas about the protection of unborn life. And as every year, there were counter-demonstrations. But the extensively cordoned-off square was not entirely filled. Photo: © Frank Nicolai The so-called "life protectors" were well protected from critical questions and counter-demonstrators. Photo: © Frank Nicolai A broad alliance of organizations and individual activists called for protest. At a rally and demonstration on the occasion of the "Action Day for Sexual Self-Determination," they clearly distanced themselves from the demands of the "life protectors." At the beginning, Roya Vahedi from the Iranian Women Activists in Exile recalled the situation for FLINTA persons in Iran and in other parts of the world. "In many countries, including Iran, in some states of the USA, in Poland, in Malta, in the Philippines, in Senegal, in Afghanistan and in Iraq (…) the rights of women have been massively restricted in recent years." She recalled how difficult it is for women in the affected countries to obtain medical help. Her appeal ended with the sentence: When they "speak of protection of life, then they must also protect the lives of people who have already been born." Roya Vahedi Photo: © Frank Nicolai Kerstin Augener is a gynecologist at the family planning center BALANCE (Berlin). She spoke about what danger the cuts in the social and medical sector by the Merz government pose for medical care in general and for women's health and abortions in particular. She sees unwantedly pregnant women from different population groups every day. "What they have in common is that they do not want to be told by religious or right-conservative groups how to live their lives." Therefore, so the doctor, she stands on the stage as a counterweight to the so-called "March for Life." "Because we too are here for life. And for the self-determined life of all people with a uterus who want to decide for themselves about their own body." Kerstin Augener Photo: © Frank Nicolai "Trans* rights are human rights" – that was the core message of the speech by Kalle Hümpfner (Federal Association Trans*). The self-determination of trans*, non-binary, and intersex people is no longer a niche issue, but part of a feminist struggle in which people support one another. It is to be regarded as a great success that since the introduction of the Self-Determination Act in April 2024, around 30,000 people have used the law and changed their gender entry. "These are 30,000 people who can determine a little more about their own lives." Kalle Hümpfner Photo: © Frank Nicolai After the demonstration procession – which was greeted at the roadside by two men with counter-posters – had arrived back at the starting point, "Gesa" from Pro familia spoke about free contraception. Many people who live in precarious circumstances cannot afford it. However, a decision is "only truly self-determined if people also have the opportunity to carry it out." And here the speaker saw a major problem in society. People who do not have access to contraception for financial reasons are not free in their decisions. Model projects show that women (and also men) who were granted cost coverage feel freer in their decisions. "In the interviews (within the framework of the model project), about half of the women said that without the cost coverage they would not use contraception at all or would use it less." "Gesa" Photo: © Frank Nicolai A doctor who called herself "Rike" and comes from Saxony-Anhalt expressed concerns about the development in the state in which the AfD has achieved an electoral victory. She has "like so many, fear after the election results," "fear and worry about how things will continue now." Because the situation in the federal state is already not particularly good: Long travel distances for women to the mandatory counseling sessions and to the doctors who perform abortions. She reported of discrimination and harassment against women who want to have abortions as well as against medical facilities and staff who perform abortions. "If the AfD now, as a governing party, implements what they promised in their election program, the situation will worsen further," warned "Rike." She pointed out that in other countries where right-wing parties have come to power, women's rights have already been massively restricted. "People die, because a ban on abortions does not lead to fewer abortions, but only to unsafe ones." "Rike" Photo: © Frank Nicolai Emma from the initiative "Only Yes Means Yes" spoke about sexualized violence and femicides. She also addressed the AfD's electoral victory in Saxony-Anhalt and recalled the party's election posters, on which women were depicted "as breeding machines." "Who is to give birth or not (…) that is negotiated directly on our (…) body." With this, the AfD continues a tradition of the Third Reich, in which women and their wombs stood "solely in the service of the nation." She recalled the situation in Poland, where the PiS party made abortions impossible and women died because doctors did not dare to help due to the impending penalties. This must not happen in Germany under any circumstances.
