A life that pleases God requires active sanctification in the areas of sexual purity and honest work, and spiritual growth is a natural, step-by-step process driven by God's Word and personal effort.

God wants you to be holy, so you must not live in sexual immorality. Then each of you will live in a way that honors God, not in lustful desire like the Gentiles who do not know God

The text is a sermon from a sermon series on the First Epistle to the Thessalonians titled 'Robust: Developing a Steadfast Faith'. The speaker introduces 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 and emphasizes that Paul calls the church to a life that pleases God. The central themes are sanctification, sexual purity, and honest work. The speaker connects the biblical instructions with the reality of life today in Frankfurt and the tension between Christian faith and societal values. He encourages the listeners to understand spiritual development as a natural process, comparable to physical development or athletic training. The text calls for growing in the following of Jesus and using the Bible as a guide in doing so.

We have just heard the Antiser, that we are in the middle of our sermon series, in the First Letter to the Thessalonians, developing a robust, firm faith. May I take you along today into a text that also somewhat describes a life that pleases God. And Paulus brings themes to prominence here and also uncovers them, which are not always easy, which are also very challenging for us, but where we are fully in the midst of them. And Paulus has the claim and it is important to him, because he has responsibility for the congregations in Thessalonica. He founded them, he equipped the first Christians there, he gave them many things with his team, and he encourages and exhorts, as always, to be exemplary and steadfast in faith. Also to be set apart, to be different, to that image that is lived, taught in ancient Greece, in society, and what people there also believed. And similar parallels we also see for ourselves. We are placed in this world as Christians, if you are a Christian and say, I have given my life here, I live with him and want to take these steps of faith, because you are at the beginning of this journey or on the search, all fine, heartily welcome. But in this field of tension, we are also here in Frankfurt, in the Frankfurt metropolitan area, that we must constantly position ourselves on topics, that we ourselves are also challenged therein and to some extent must also give an answer, when we are asked about it in society, in our environment. And how do we manage to develop strengthening in faith, and this text speaks a lot about holiness, of sanctification. How do we manage to get there, to the image that Jesus conveys to us here? And we will also deal with the topic of the Second Coming in the next two weeks, because the Thessalonians had prepared themselves for it and prepared for it, but that is another topic and we start fully into, I read the first 12 verses and then we go through verse by verse, and if you are a Bible lover and a Bible verse lover, then you will get your full value today. At the end, dear brothers and also sisters, I will take them along, brothers and sisters, we ask you once more in the name of Jesus, the Lord, to live as God pleases and as you have been taught. You are already aligning yourselves with this and we encourage you to do so more and more, for you remember what we have taught you through Jesus Christ the Lord. God wants you to be holy, therefore you should not live in immorality. Then each of you will live so that he gives honor to God, not in unbridled lust like other people who do not know God, never defraud or take advantage of a brother, for the Lord will repay for all these sins, and as we have already told you, God has called us to live holy and not to lead an unclean life, whoever therefore refuses to live accordingly does not disregard human regulations, but thereby rejects God, who has given you his Holy Spirit. But concerning love among believers, I do not need to write to you any more, for God himself has taught you to love one another. Already now your love toward all the brothers in all Macedonia is great. Nevertheless, we ask you, brothers, to love them even more. Endeavor to live a quiet life, attend to your own business and work with your own hands, as we also told you, so that you may walk properly toward outsiders and be in need of no one. Here Paulus addresses the behavior of the Christians of that time, who were new in the faith, but perhaps also one or the other a little longer on the way, lifestyles, ethical guidelines that he gives to the congregation here, if you orient yourselves by them and adopt them and walk in them and become more like Jesus, then you can develop a strong and firm faith piece by piece. Perhaps you also know ethical guidelines in your professional context. We have, we have them at our place, I am, besides my pastoral activity, which I consider minor here, I am also active in the business world and there, when we come to the headquarters, we have four values or also four ethical guidelines regarding how we treat each other. We had to learn them by heart, and we are also, as leadership, as managers, constantly reminded of them. So perhaps you also know that at work, there are guidelines, ethics, a behavior, how we should treat each other. And this confession of Jesus apparently is not sufficient, but Paulus calls for sanctification, calls for continually developing further in faith and growing towards that which God has actually prepared for our life and what he desires for us. And he picks out two areas about which we will speak today, sexual purity and doing honest work. With this, he addresses two drives in humans, which we also have and to which we must face ourselves, sexual desire and earning money. What does the text evoke in you, if you read it like this, if you hear it like this? Do you feel internal pressure, fear of failure? Or is there a point? I would rather not listen to that, I will just ignore that. Where being a Christian and discipleship, I notice that in the last weeks and months, this is really challenging, regarding discipline, that is perhaps somewhat exhausting. Doing works somehow, I thought, it is much about grace and about love and not so much about doing something and becoming better. I must not make any mistakes, be holy, wow, that is such a big word, that is such a big topic. How am I supposed to manage that? And if you have been on the way with him for a longer time and have perhaps heard these topics a few times already, perhaps at another point, to make a checkmark for you, and you are perhaps in a completely different topic, which we will not touch today, then I still want to address you, the one who is new in faith, is searching for God, is perhaps also addressing these questions and does not really have an answer to them, because to some extent we live in a society that upholds entirely different moral values, a daily life that does not deal with that at all, but where I experience entirely different things, perhaps you are on the way in such a context, but perhaps you also say, hey, I would like to take these steps of faith, I also want to grow in these topics, because I believe, that is good for me and God also desires that for my life, then I want to tell you, hey, we are all at a point where we once started in faith, where we were spiritual babies, where we developed into children, where ignorance shaped us and we were allowed to learn through people who showed us an example, through people who taught us something, through parents, through pastors, through youth leaders, through children’s church services and we were allowed to take in things piece by piece, grow in them, just as it is also entirely normal for our human nature that we become from baby to child, become teenagers, become adolescents and make progress in our development. And so it is also in the spiritual life, it is something entirely natural that we examine things, accept them, look, in which points are we there, which topics do I have, with which should I deal more, which perhaps fall a bit easier for me, which challenge me, and perhaps you are currently working on such a topic and we touch on it today. I want to encourage you to take these developmental steps and to have a goal in mind. For example, it is quite simple: if we want to make progress, whether in the area of sports or fitness, perhaps you have a weight-loss goal, or you have some addiction from which you would like to be free, and you take steps and do something so that this goal you have in mind is eventually achieved. So, very normal, natural things where we also expect change and progress, where we challenge ourselves, where we write plans for ourselves. One asks Tobi Krattochville, when he wants to achieve his marathon goals and just wants to be a few minutes faster from one year to the next, how his training then changes accordingly, and what he adds in terms of nutrition and other things so that he might just be a few minutes faster. Now, these are not important things, as I see it. I also love running and getting better, but that is a goal in sight that he has, where one says, I take something on, I do something for it, I engage with it, so that I pursue this goal. And perhaps you are currently in the spiritual faith also at such a point: identity in Christ, how can I love Jesus even more, how can I get better at reading the Bible, at praying, what does it mean to enter into righteousness with someone and also to confess my sins, what does it mean to stretch out in the spiritual gifts, to live in them, what is it, how do I actually receive the Holy Spirit upon me, into me, is he already in me or how do I deal with that, also in everyday life, how do I deal with that when Jesus returns, when he also repeatedly addresses these challenging things in which we live. All things, each of us has a different topic with which he is currently dealing and where we can grow in faith. This cocktail of will, mind, and feeling is different in all of us, but the means that God uses are the same: the word of God, the Word of God, and the Bible. And there we see many points that also help us and where we are also encouraged, exhortated to take steps of faith. Now, 2 Corinthians 3, verse 18, it says there, we are being transformed from glory to glory. And because we are so different, we also have different approaches to how we can grow in faith. But I want to take you along on this journey and break it down piece by piece with you, and I hope that you will also take steps for yourself, but also notice things where you realize that you are challenged and that is a topic you are dealing with, or perhaps you also know someone who is currently stuck in that, so that we can take it on and also grow in it. At the end it says, beloved brothers, we ask you once more in the name of Jesus the Lord, to live as God pleases and as he has taught you. You are already aligning yourselves with this, and we encourage you to do it more and more, that is, to make progress in it. For you recognize, for you remember, what we have taught you through Jesus Christ. Luther translates this “doing it more and more” as “that you become more and more perfect in it,” and perfection, if we look that up on Google or look at the word and what it means, denotes a state of unsurpassability or flawlessness. Who has already achieved that? A state, therefore, without errors, without defects, without damages. Something, yes, where we look at ourselves, what we also wish for, none of us makes mistakes. None of us wants to be stained in some way or have defects or have some deficit that he has like a log on his leg or be damaged. None of us wants that. I believe that. But this challenge, that we are all sinners, that we are all not yet perfected, only in eternity in Jesus, but nevertheless, how we stretch ourselves toward this perfection described in this text here, that is exactly the point. We are not there yet, but we want to stretch ourselves toward it and move ourselves there into this perfection, of which we read here. And Paul and Luther are similarly of the opinion that it is not only desirable, but they also repeatedly point out that it is possible to grow in it and that it is also possible not only to strive for it, but also to become more steadfast and to make progress in it, step by step. Striving for a life in holiness is this first point. God desires that you be holy, therefore you should not live in immorality. And in Hebrews 12:14, it says with regard to the eternal goal, that is, eternity. Without holiness, no one will see the Lord. This means that we, in this world, in this life, where we are placed, a society that presents us with a different picture of life, of ethics, as well as of how I live at all or how I should live, to a certain extent or perhaps not only to a certain extent, but very strongly, that we allow ourselves to be transformed into what Jesus actually desires for us. Whoever wants our life, that our minds also be transformed, it says in a verse as well. For God, this is an important aspect, that we come into this holiness and that we do not only experience it someday in the glory and in eternity, but that we may already taste it here on earth, may stretch ourselves toward it, and that it may and should also become visible in our lives. Being holy means nothing other than being different, because God is also different from this world. It denotes the process of becoming more like God’s nature or also having a purity that reflects the contrast of human sin. And if we look at the Hebrew word for holy, it is translated as Kadosh and means being sanctified by God and thereby being set apart to give God honor. God is holy and He also makes us holy through Jesus Christ. We are pronounced holy when we give Him our life and align our life according to Him, and then our life may also be Kadosh. But this being set apart, we know, everything is a challenge. It is not simply a matter of making a decision, I pray for myself, and then it is good and then I am somehow pushed in the direction of Kadosh. No, it is always a challenge in the face of what, where we also work, in the sports club, in school, at university, in social media comments and in the forums where we perhaps hang out, in the political landscapes in which we move, that we are repeatedly challenged: how do we deal with these topics, how do we stand toward them, how do we position ourselves, what kind of opinion do we uphold, or better said, not only what kind of opinion do we uphold, but what does our life look like when we are to be set apart, as is described here. God desires that you be holy, therefore you should not live in immorality. Living in immorality or immorality, what is described here, the Greek word porneia, means harlotry or sexual immorality. And if we break down the word a bit more or go deeper into it, then many other things are also meant, including pornography, something that occupies us every day. Excuse me for saying it that way, but if you open your smartphone, then you have the chance, within a short time, to engage with pornography and conditions that can lead exactly into this immoral life. And this love or this prostitution, which was also present in the ancient church, this purchasable love, this culture was strongly shaped back then, not only in Thessalonica, but also in Ephesus, in Corinth is very strong and also plays a role in the Epistle to the Romans, Paul repeatedly speaks of things that separate us from God, and this is written with the word porneia. And not only in antiquity, but also in the New Testament, we find this word repeatedly, and it is interpreted in the sense that it refers to any kind of sexual intercourse outside of marriage. This includes adultery, premarital sex, incest, and also homosexual acts. These are all very challenging topics, difficult ones, in which we are all somehow involved, before which we are not immune, from which we are also tempted, in which we are caught up, can we draw the right conclusions from them, engage with them, and also make decisions for our lives? I do not want to go deeper into this; one can open it up very broadly. I simply refer to our Module 2 in the Discipleship Circle, where we clearly address marriage, sex before marriage, homosexuality, and also how we deal with people in that regard, even if we ourselves should have such inclinations. These are all sensitive topics where society and also people in our environment probably have a different opinion. This is also a different life, where we also notice that there is always friction and also divisions, even in churches and congregations. For all difficult things, it is important that we engage with them and that we look at what our position is, what we see from the Word of God, how we describe certain things, and how we can also deal with them and also embrace each other in love, and also withstand tensions when we happen to have different opinions. Then each of you will live so as to honor God, not in lustful passion, like those who do not know God. And here the question is: what does lustful passion mean in a very practical sense? How do you handle your body? Do you have your body under control? Do you perhaps have the desire that sometimes tempts you into a licentious life or into a temptation? Do you have it under control? What happens when you turn on your smartphone and you actually only wanted to watch the summary of a Bundesliga match, and suddenly you end up on these women? What happens when you are married and suddenly realize that someone else is flirting with you, and it is perhaps uncomfortable for you yourself, or you notice that you yourself are going beyond that step, yes, you are a bit nice, and then we stop, you can also make me compliments, making compliments is not a bad thing. Where might that perhaps lead in your thoughts? Are you the master of your thoughts? I really want us, when we, one can speak so much about the topic of temptation, and also men, we have, I believe, if we put our heart in our hand and place our hand on it and say, if we are truly honest with ourselves, then we have in many things also very, very many weaknesses, where we also do not talk so often about our temptations, out of fear of failing, out of fear of developing charm. I do not want to go deeper into that; I believe that is once again a men’s topic where we would like to talk a bit deeper among men, and then we can also look at Paul’s armor of God, what can we do to arm ourselves against it? These are not easy topics, and perhaps you are even at a point where you have already crossed a threshold, where you realize that it is not just a problem in your thoughts, but you have already gone too far. Something has happened that you did not want to do, but your wife does not know about it, or your husband does not know about it. I want to encourage you: do not deal with it by yourself, seek help, find a friend, a person you trust, who does not gossip about it, who does not make fun of it, where you perhaps even know yourself, then Can I honestly entrust things to him, and perhaps he accompanies me in a process and helps me. With him, I can render an account, and he also shows me a way out, how I can deal with these things. And also in our church, I want to encourage courage; we have such strong offerings. We have a strong marriage team, we have a strong pastoral care team, we have a strong Solstice and Man-Up team, we also have strong Connect group leaders who are also repeatedly confronted with things on the journey, such as how do we deal with such topics, and not every group is suitable for putting everything on the table, bringing everything to light. This also means courage and determination to really make a decision, sometimes perhaps with consequences that we may not yet be able to see currently, but I want to encourage us as a church to face these things. And also people whom we perhaps know are in these struggles, in these challenges, and there is not always immediately a black and white, and this one prayer and this one sentence sometimes brings nothing, but I take on the person, I am there for them, and I take these steps in faith with them. And the question is not whether we have temptations, but where do you have temptations? And James, I love James, but this passage also challenges me, and you think he writes it with such determination, with such self-evident certainty, James 1:2-4, where I think wow, I do not find it as easy as you describe it here. Beloved brothers and sisters, it says here, consider it pure joy, jippie, when your faith is repeatedly tested. Oh thank you, you have no idea where I am currently living. You know that such tests of endurance make you firm and unshakable. This steadfastness should take effect in your whole life, so that you become mature and faultless Chr

Bist du her deiner Gedanken?
