Much of what we call our nature is merely habit, and through conscious, repeated behavior we can change our samskaras and thereby our character.
So much of what we say, this is who I am, half and that is who I am, is actually just habit. Samskaras.
The text explains the concept of samskaras from yoga as dynamic impressions that, through repetition, form grooves in the mind and become inclinations, desires, and waves of thought. Sukadev Bretz reads from a book and describes how habits arise, become entrenched, and are eventually experienced as self-evident. Everyday examples include checking phone messages in the morning, one's diet, and reactions to the behavior of others. The central claim is that much of what we call our nature is merely habit and can be changed through conscious behavior. New samskaras arise through the development of new habits, which initially requires effort but later becomes natural. The text advises becoming aware of one's own thought habits, emotional habits, and behavioral habits, and changing those that are not helpful. It emphasizes that one does not have to cling to all habits and does not have to be fully identified with them.

I am reading something, I have slipped into the book, Tartana, Spürerte in Praxis, from the chapter Samskaras, impressions that determine the human being. What is the nature of Samskaras? Are they like a furrow in the earth or like grooves on the record? No, Samskaras, impressions and thereby inclinations to act, are dynamic. And such a number, such experiences that leave grooves in the human mind, make this impression into an apparently living impression. It becomes active, it begins to become a dynamic factor in the life of the human being. That is, it becomes a dynamic tendency in the character of the human being and when this stage is reached, the repeated intake of the special impression makes it assume the form of a vital or living force in the character of the human being. It becomes a Varsana and all these Varsanas, these are now desires, keep the mind constantly in a state of agitation and they continuously set waves on the mind, movement, and this constant waves call forth Vretis, that is, thoughts. So he describes how inclinations to act arise. So suppose, someone is accustomed to begin the day every day with something, with retrieving mobile phone messages. And now would be somewhere where there is no mobile phone, or no mobile phone reception, what will the human being first experience? Somehow, I have no idea, because you are not doing it, clever, he will start to complain about it. Now someone who has never looked at mobile phone messages in the morning, that somehow gets the question, where to look at it in the morning, quite irrelevant. But if you have done it a few times, then you have the inclination to do it every day. And if you then no longer do it, then it is a matter of overcoming. If you have not done it for a while, then you feel good. We only need to develop so-called new habits, then new Samskarmas arise. Likewise, suppose, some country is, to have a healthy diet. After a while that has become a habit, then you no longer miss what is unhealthy. But suppose, you always had an unhealthy diet before, now the temptation to become healthy is a matter of overcoming. But if you have done it for a while, then it is natural and no longer a matter of overcoming. And so all forms of Samskarmas can be changed. Or suppose, you have the habit, whenever someone does something that you do not approve of, then you start to complain about it and to scold the person. That is also a Samskarma. We can also overcome that. We can also cultivate the Samskarma that we assume that most people fundamentally mean the most good and act according to their best knowledge and conscience and possibilities. And they may sometimes not be quite as perfect as you hold yourself. But you do not have to... Yes, or suppose, you are accustomed to get up every morning at half past five and to meditate. How much overcoming does it cost then, to get up tomorrow at half past five and to meditate? None at all. If it then happens at some point that you have to go to some airport, where you have to go, or somewhere at the train station, or have to take the train somewhere, then you already have to get up at five o'clock. You cannot meditate at quarter to six or six. Then it feels terrible. So much of what we say, so I am half and that is me, is actually only habit. Samskaras. And from Samskaras become Vasanais. I absolutely need that. And so we can change Samskaras by changing our behavior. And for that it requires a certain overcoming. And then you naturally also have to consider, which Samskaras would I not have at all. And what would I not do, that I want it? And accordingly we can reshape our mind. And that this whole big chapter, where we are just now in the middle of, it always comes back to, be aware of yourself
consciously, you have thinking habits, you have feeling habits, you have emotional habits, you have behavioral habits, and all of this is nothing but habits. And habits can change. Do you have to change all your habits? As long as the majority are wholesome, good habits, and we do learn that we don't have to cling to them and also not 100 percent with self-identification, there are good habits that we can hold on to. But there are such thinking habits, emotional habits, feeling habits that are not so helpful. And above all, when they are connected with strong identification, they are not so good for our spiritual practitioners.

Was ungesund ist.
