The existing criminalization of abortions in Germany is an attack on civil liberty, which is maintained through religious-political influences and must therefore be eliminated through legislative reform and education.

The reason the Giordano Bruno Foundation is so committed to sexual and reproductive self-determination rights is that these are not a side issue in the political debate, but rather a core element of civil liberty

The text announces nationwide actions for the 'Safe Abortion Day' to protest against the criminalization of abortions in Germany. It criticizes existing legal barriers such as mandatory counseling and waiting periods, as well as long travel distances for pregnant women. The Giordano Bruno Foundation refers to warnings from the WHO and the Council of Europe and names political actors who insist on maintaining the current legislation. It argues that religious forces with substantial financial resources from abroad are acting against sexual self-determination. The text calls for the repeal of Sections 218 and 219 of the German Criminal Code and the integration of abortions into gynecological training. It presents sexual and reproductive self-determination as a core element of civil liberty. The organization emphasizes that anti-sexual ideologies ultimately aim at the control of society as a whole.

Organizations Nationwide actions for the “Safe Abortion Day” will take place in the coming days “Safe and legal abortions NOW!” Unwantedly pregnant people in Germany are still criminalized when they want or need to have an abortion. They are forced to undergo mandatory counseling, must accept a three-day mandatory reflection period, and endure hours-long travel times – all of this until the 12th week of pregnancy. The Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination opposes this with the “Safe Abortion Day,” within the framework of which 83 actions will take place in 54 cities. Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung 24.09.2026 Action day of the "Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination" in Berlin 2020 Photo: © Sabrina Gröschke CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Council of Europe have repeatedly reprimanded Germany for the existing criminalization of abortions. However, the AfD and CDU continue to advocate for the retention of the criminalization of abortions. In doing so, the Christian right can draw on ample financial resources, as the report “The Next Wave: How Religious Extremism Is Regaining Power” has shown: Thus, between 2019 and 2023 alone, around 1.2 billion US dollars were spent on religious anti-gender and anti-abortion campaigns in Europe. The funds come, among other things, from Russia and the USA. To counter this dangerous development, politics is called upon to take seriously the individual self-determination rights enshrined in the Basic Law. In the area of reproductive self-determination rights, this means, among other things, that people who need an abortion are decriminalized and destigmatized through the repeal of Section 218 of the German Criminal Code and Section 219 of the German Criminal Code, that pregnant people receive the medical care they need locally, and that abortion finally becomes part of gynecological training. The long fight for sexual and reproductive self-determination The Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung (gbs) has supported the Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination since its founding in 2012. Within the framework of the (proceeding accompanied by the gbs and the Institute for Worldview Law (ifw)) against the Gießen doctor Kristina Hänel, the Alliance was able to generate so much pressure on the street that the “Doctor Intimidation Paragraph” 219 of the German Criminal Code was repealed by the German Bundestag in 2022. Shortly thereafter, after 150 years, a fundamental reform of the legislation on abortion would have almost taken place, but this was unfortunately prevented at the last moment by the (once very progressive in this area) FDP. Currently, the gbs, ifw, and the Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination are also accompanying the case of the gynecologist Joachim Volz, who was prohibited by the Catholic hospital operator from performing medically indicated abortions. The reason the Giordano-Bruno-Stiftung advocates so strongly for sexual and reproductive self-determination rights is that these are not a side aspect of political debate, but rather a core element of civil liberty, as the article “Who controls sex controls society” in the current bruno. annual magazine (of the gbs) shows. Because sex-negative ideologies are “anti-liberty, anti-human ideologies. They may give the impression of wanting to regulate only a small part of life, but ultimately they aim at the overall organization of society.” Detailed information on the actions within the framework of this year’s “Safe Abortion Day” can be found on the website of the action day.
