The Value of Teaching and the Scholar

The knowledge of the Prophets is transmitted through scholars, and the loss of this knowledge through the death of scholars without succession leads to religious misguidance, which is why learning and the promotion of scholars is a communal obligation.

The scholars are the heirs of the Prophets. The Prophets did not leave behind gold or silver. Their inheritance is knowledge. Whoever accepts it has received a great share.

The text is an Islamic sermon that highlights the value of teaching and scholars in Islam. It begins with a hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad (s) particularly honors the group that learns and transmits, and refers to himself as a teacher. The scholars are presented as the heirs of the Prophets, whose inheritance is not material but of the nature of knowledge. The text emphasizes that scholars not only possess knowledge but also serve as role models through their lives and protect society from false notions. A connection to the present is made by pointing to the easy availability of information today, which however does not automatically lead to genuine knowledge. A warning is issued that with the death of scholars knowledge is lost and that the ignorant pass religious judgments. The text concludes with a call to encourage children to learn and to support young people in acquiring thorough knowledge.

Dear Muslims! It is important to know the truth and to have someone who conveys it to us. Our Prophet Muhammad (s) is the one who has taught us everything that belongs to faith. One day, the Messenger of Allah (s) encountered two groups in the mosque. One group was reading from the Quran and reciting Duas. The other group was learning and passing on their knowledge. He said that both groups were doing something good. About those who were learning together, he said: "They learn and pass on their knowledge. I too was sent as a teacher." [1] Then he sat down with them. In doing so, he showed us: He was sent as a Prophet and as a teacher to teach us the religion. Today it is our scholars and Imams who pass on the knowledge that the Prophets have left behind. Our Prophet (s) said: "The scholars are the heirs of the Prophets. The Prophets have left behind neither gold nor silver. Their inheritance is knowledge. Whoever accepts it has received a great share." [2] Scholars are not simply people who know a lot. With their knowledge, they help others to understand connections and to distinguish right from wrong. Through their own lives as well, they are a role model. A scholar passes on correct and reliable knowledge. In this way, he protects society from false notions, seeks solutions to problems, and helps to ensure that coming generations grow up with knowledge, Iman, and good character. Dear brothers and sisters! Let us learn Islam from reliable sources: from scholars and Imams who truly know what they are doing. In the Quran it says: "If you do not know something, ask those who have knowledge." [3] Today we have easier access to information than ever before. Yet it has become more difficult to distinguish correct information from false information. Watching a few short videos, reading posts from unknown sources, or believing what a search engine displays does not make us people of knowledge at all. It can even lead us to false notions about our religion. When a scholar dies, we do not lose only a person. We also lose someone who conveys knowledge and wisdom and shows others the way. The Messenger of Allah (s) said: "Allah does not take away knowledge from people simply. Rather, He takes it away by causing the scholars to die. When finally no scholar remains, people take the ignorant as leaders. These are asked for advice and issue religious rulings without having the necessary knowledge. Thus they themselves go astray and lead others astray as well." [4] This Hadith shows us: knowledge is lost when scholars die and no one grows up who can take over their task. Therefore, we should encourage our children to learn. Let us support young people in becoming scholars or in acquiring thorough knowledge and skill in other fields, so that they are of use to society. May Allah guide us to the straight path. May He protect us and our descendants from straying onto false paths. Amin! Verehrte Muslime! Amin!
