Political voting behaviour in Germany is strongly dependent on the religious affiliation as well as the age and gender of voters, which leads to different preferences for various parties.

The state parliamentary elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern show clear differences in the voting behaviour of different confessions. This is based on an evaluation by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen, which is exclusively available to the Catholic News Agency (KNA).

The text analyses the election results of the state parliamentary elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with regard to the religious affiliation of voters. The evaluation by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen shows that voting behaviour varies significantly according to confession. In Berlin, the Left achieved a significantly higher value among Muslim voters with 51 percent than in the overall average, while the CDU performed strongly among Christians. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the SPD scored particularly well among Protestant voters, while the AfD achieved 38.2 percent overall there, but less among Christians. Age and gender also influenced voting behaviour, with Christian women more likely to vote for the Left or the SPD and Christian men more frequently for the AfD. The data are based on an election survey in which about half of the persons surveyed provided information on their religious affiliation. The text presents these statistical correlations without making normative judgements.

Society How the confessions voted in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern The election results in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern vary depending on religious affiliation. While the Left (Die Linke) reached a particularly large number of Muslims in Berlin, the SPD led among Christians in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Age and gender also played a role. Luca La Mendola 30.09.2026 Photo: Tim Reckmann via flickr CC BY 2.0 The state parliamentary elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern show clear differences in the voting behavior of various confessions. This is evident from an analysis by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen (Electoral Research Group), which is exclusively available to the Catholic News Agency (KNA). Particularly striking is the result for the Left in Berlin: Among Muslim voters, approval on the ballot was significantly higher at 51 percent than their overall value of 25.7 percent. Compared to the previous election, the party gained 36 percentage points in this group. The Left also performed above average among people without religious affiliation. 28 percent of voters without a confession chose them. In contrast, approval was lower among the Christian religious communities. Among Catholic voters, the party received 17 percent, and among Protestant voters, 16 percent. Nevertheless, it gained nine percentage points in both groups. Especially among younger people with Christian religious affiliation, the Left found great support. In the age group of those under 35, 33 percent of Christian voters voted for them. CDU remains strong among Christians in Berlin While the Left was particularly successful among Muslim and non-confessional voters, the CDU, which is competing for the office of mayor, achieved its highest values among Christians. 30 percent of Catholic and 27 percent of Protestant voters gave their vote to the Christian Democrats. Thus, the party was significantly above its overall performance of 18.8 percent in both groups. The SPD also performed somewhat better among Christians than overall. However, both the Social Democrats and the CDU had to accept losses in all examined religious groups. These were particularly pronounced among Muslim voters. The AfD also gained ground among Christian voters in the Berlin election. Its results were largely within the range of the overall result. Among Catholic voters under 35, it achieved a slightly higher share at 17 percent than among same-age Protestant voters, of whom 13 percent voted for the party. In contrast, approval for the AfD was significantly lower among Muslim voters. At four percent, it was one percentage point below its result in the previous election. The Greens also moved largely within the range of their overall result among Christian voters. Among people without religious affiliation, they performed worse than among the two Christian confessions. In particular, among younger Christians, they were able to achieve comparatively high vote shares. However, the Greens, like the CDU and the SPD, lost in all examined religious groups overall. SPD scores points in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mainly among Protestants A different picture emerges in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. There, the AfD achieved a total of 38.2 percent of the votes in the state parliamentary election. Among Christian voters, however, its result was lower at 31 percent. In contrast, the SPD was able to score points particularly among Protestant voters. 40 percent of them decided in favor of the Social Democrats. Among Catholic voters, its vote share was 33 percent. Thus, the SPD performed differently in both groups but achieved a higher share than the AfD in each case. In the case of the CDU, differences were also evident between the religious groups. While 14 percent of Catholics voted for the Union, it was ten percent among Protestants. Among the non-religious, the party achieved only three percent. Age and gender influence voting behavior In addition to religious affiliation, age and gender also played a role in the elections in both federal states. Christians aged 60 and over voted for the CDU or the SPD above average. The AfD achieved its best results in the middle age groups. Differences were also evident between women and men. Christian women tended to support The Left or the SPD, while Christian men more often voted for the AfD. This is particularly evident in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: There, 46 percent of Protestant women voted for the SPD. In this group, the AfD received significantly fewer votes than among men. The analysis by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen is based on surveys conducted immediately after voting. On election day, approximately 17,000 people were surveyed in polling stations in each federal state. About half of them additionally provided information on their religious affiliation.
