The remembrance of the biblical exodus from Egypt serves in tense times as a source of confidence and as a foundation for a shared, respectful coexistence of different religious groups.

Together we want to commit ourselves, alongside the members of the Jewish communities, to good coexistence — together also with our Muslim neighbours and all people of good will.

The text is a joint greeting from Bishop Dr. Klaus Krämer and Regional Bishop Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl to the Jewish communities for the Passover festival in the year 2026. The authors refer to the narrative of the exodus from Egypt in the Book of Exodus and relate it to the current, tense times. They emphasise that the uncertainty before the liberation is as much a part of the story as the freedom that followed. The authors express their confidence that God also accompanies his people today. They mention that the story of Israel is also read aloud in the Christian Easter night. A joint commitment to good coexistence with Muslim neighbours and all people of good will is called for. The text closes with warm blessings and a request for encouragement for the challenges to come.

We wish to express our warmest blessings to you and all your relatives, friends, and members of the community. They are heated weeks, full of tension and worry, in which preparations for Passover are made, and when one reads the narrative in the Book of Exodus, the words find a very current resonance. The Seder evening as the primeval date of liberation – this can easily obscure the fact that before the liberation, too, the uncertainty and the worry must be endured – and above all, the danger that the great project fails. We wish that you may celebrate liberation in the days of the festival: From the memory of the successful departure from Egypt into freedom, in the confidence that God also accompanies and leads His people today. When the Easter night is celebrated in our congregations, the narrative of the Exodus from Egypt is also heard in the liturgy – the beginning of the history of Israel. Together, we wish to engage with the members of the Jewish communities for a good coexistence – together also with our Muslim neighbors and all people of good will. We wish you and all who now celebrate Passover a festive Seder evening and happy feast days, which strengthen and encourage all who join in the celebration for the path through the coming weeks and months with the challenges that await. Chag Pessach sameach – a happy Passover festival Yours Bishop Dr. Klaus Krämer State Bishop Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl

Ihre Bischof Dr. Klaus Krämer Landesbischof Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl
