The fuel discount is an untargeted and expensive measure that does not address the root cause of the fuel price crisis; instead, targeted social relief and a consistent electrification are needed to end the dependence on fossil energies.
Instead of repeatedly pouring large amounts of tax money into treating symptoms, the federal government should provide targeted relief to people and at the same time drive forward the phase-out of fossil dependence.
The text is a press release from the Climate Alliance Germany, which reproduces a statement by Viviane Raddatz on the fuel discount of the federal government. The federal government is reducing the energy tax on fuels from 1 October to 31 December 2026, which also lowers the value added tax. Raddatz acknowledges that high fuel prices put a strain on many people, especially low-income drivers. However, she describes the fuel discount as the wrong answer, because it costs billions and is distributed with a watering can. Those who refuel the most benefit the most, regardless of need. The discount changes nothing about the cause of the price spikes, the dependence on oil and crisis-prone world market prices. Instead of treating symptoms, she calls for targeted relief and a phase-out of fossil energies. Specifically, she mentions the reduction of the electricity tax for households, a nationwide 29-euro social ticket, and socially tiered direct payments.

Statement by Viviane Raddatz on the fuel discount
Due to high petrol prices, the federal government is reducing the energy tax on fuels from 1 October to 31 December 2026. This also reduces the value added tax levied on it.
Viviane Raddatz, Managing Director of Network and Society at Climate Alliance Germany, says: "The high fuel prices are a burden on many people, especially those who depend on the car and have little money to spend. But a renewed fuel discount is the wrong answer to that. It costs the state billions of euros and provides relief with a watering can. Those who refuel a lot get the most, whether they need it or not. And it changes nothing about the cause of the price spikes: our dependence on oil and its crisis-prone world market prices.
Instead of repeatedly pouring a lot of tax money into symptom treatment, the federal government should provide targeted relief for people and at the same time drive forward the exit from fossil dependence. This requires a policy that consistently strengthens electrification. This includes ensuring that the reduction in electricity tax for households actually comes through. Equally important are a nationwide 29-euro social ticket and socially graduated direct payments that provide relief where money is tight. Durable affordable mobility is only possible if we become less dependent on fossil energies. The federal government must now ensure that this is our last oil crisis!"
