The AfD is unconstitutional due to its whitewashing attitude toward the Nazi dictatorship and its violation of human dignity, and should be banned in order to protect democracy.

Anyone who does not deal responsibly with history must never be allowed to take responsibility for the future of Germany.

The text reports on the hearing of the entertainer Hape Kerkeling in the Justice Committee of the Thuringian state parliament, which was initiated by the Die Linke faction. The goal is to move the state government to initiate a ban proceedings against the AfD at the federal level. Kerkeling argues that the AfD's whitewashing attitude toward the Nazi dictatorship and its violation of human dignity are unconstitutional. He appeals to politicians to take responsibility for the future and warns of the radicalization of the party and its supporters. At the same time, he calls on the democratic parties to listen to the concerns of voters in order to win them back. The text also mentions the appearance of former head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Hans-Georg Maaßen, who rejects a ban and instead proposes proceedings against Die Linke. Kerkeling emphasizes that silence in times of attack on democracy is a decision, and warns against voting for extremism.

Politics Eight Jurists and an Entertainer How Hape Kerkeling campaigns for an AfD ban procedure The Justice Committee of the Thuringian State Parliament has never been in the public spotlight as much as it was during its most recent session. A committee hearing in a state parliament normally interests only a few people. However, the Thuringian Left pulled off a particular coup by placing the comedian and entertainer Hape Kerkeling on the list of experts and thereby achieving nationwide attention for a topic that until now has been discussed in talk shows and media and demanded at demonstrations: the initiation of an AfD ban procedure. Peter Kurz 02.10.2026 Hape Kerkeling in the Thuringian State Parliament (30 September 2026) Screenshot from the live broadcast of the session (video see below) Now the question has arrived for the first time on the political stage of a parliament. A ban application at the Federal Constitutional Court could be submitted by the Bundestag, the Federal Government, or also by the Bundesrat. It is possible that Thuringia, with its nearly ten-hour committee session, has made a start in order to also bring other federal states on board through a Bundesrat application. The Left, which had placed the topic on the agenda in the Erfurt State Parliament, wants to achieve that the state government (a minority government of CDU and SPD) advocates for a ban procedure at the federal level. That Kerkeling not only masters "Horst Schlämmer" and other comic characters, but also the serious role, he had recently proven. At the commemoration of the liberation of the NS concentration camp Buchenwald, he delivered a much-noticed speech. Kerkeling's communist grandfather, who shortly after Hitler's seizure of power had distributed leaflets against the National Socialist regime, had to perform forced labor in that concentration camp at the time. Kerkeling also speaks about this in his one-hour hearing, when he says: "My grandfather had a few lessons for me. One of them was: When they start turning the bottom upside up, it is almost already too late." He wants to stand up for democracy, and in good time. Kerkeling, who had previously listened for hours to the statements and interrogations of eight jurists, makes clear in his opening statement that he is not speaking as an expert in constitutional law, but as a descendant of a victim of National Socialism. In his plea, he campaigns earnestly for an hour for the initiation of an AfD ban procedure. In doing so, he limits himself to a single aspect – the AfD's handling of German history – and says: "Because alone their whitewashing attitude toward the NS dictatorship makes them unconstitutional in my eyes. Fear, lies, and hatred were the ingredients of National Socialist ideology. And they are today for the direction of this right-wing extremist party." Appeal to the state parliament politicians Yet hatred against minorities has no place in a country with its terrible history. Anyone who relativizes, downplays, or trivializes the crimes of 1933 to 1945 leaves the ground of the Basic Law, says Kerkeling, sitting on the members' bench, and quotes Article 1 of the Basic Law: "The dignity of the human being is inviolable." Anyone who deliberately frightens people with disabilities, of another faith, of another skin color, as well as queer or transgender people, violates this dignity. He especially wishes that the politicians take this one sentence of his home with them: "Anyone who does not deal responsibly with history must never take on responsibility for the future of Germany." Kerkeling appeals to the state parliament members and the government members present: "I ask you, use your voice, the influence of the state government in the Federal Council, to finally initiate this important proceeding. It is precisely from here, from the country in which history has imparted its bitterest lessons, that this signal must come." He means the former concentration camp Buchenwald, just a few kilometers from the Erfurt state parliament, in which his grandfather was also imprisoned. The party is increasingly radicalizing and the followers expect a stronger radicalization, so Kerkeling's warning to the politicians: "The longer you wait, the more radical this party will become, and the more the followers and voters will radicalize and will become accustomed to the tone, to the language, and to the violation of human dignity." Not at all humorous, as one knows him otherwise, but bitterly serious, the comedian also addresses the citizens when he says: "Anyone who remains silent when democracy is attacked has already chosen a side, even if they perhaps believe they have remained neutral. Anyone who votes for right-wing populists is not voting for protest. They are ruining, knowingly or unknowingly, their own future and that of their children. Anyone who votes for extremists is not exercising legitimate protest, but is celebrating the capitulation of facts before volume." That the entertainer himself becomes a target with such statements and is wished a stay in a concentration camp in social networks belongs to his daily experiences. He has never experienced the AfD moderating its followers in such matters, he laments. Both the state protection in Lower Saxony and the state protection in North Rhine-Westphalia are, as far as he, Kerkeling, is concerned, unfortunately permanently occupied. And he also comes to speak of an election slogan that the AfD used in the Saxony-Anhalt election campaign: "Everything is possible." With a car manufacturer, he would understand such a sentence, as it is about speed increase or more seats in the car. "But a political party where everything is possible and which makes that its election slogan, with that, Buchenwald is also possibly possible." But would something be achieved with a ban on the AfD? The voters who gave and give the party their voice are then still there. To this, Kerkeling says, he considers it possible "that these people can very quickly find their way back to the democratic parties." However, the democratic parties must also listen again and approach the people, take their concerns seriously. "And that is actually also my appeal to all democratic parties. Stay with the people, stay close to the pulse, and take all the concerns of the voters, whether justified or unjustified, seriously. Then I am firmly convinced that we can bring all these people back on board." Hape Kerkeling as Federal President? A member of parliament eventually changes the subject and assumes a sort of journalist role when he asks how Kerkeling actually feels about the calls for him to become Federal President in the near future. A corresponding online petition has already been supported by just under 150,000 people. The committee chairperson cuts off the question, saying it does not belong to the topic. And Kerkeling only briefly says that he will not answer it either. After Kerkeling, another prominent figure appeared in the committee in the evening, by the way. One who, according to media reports, had previously met with Thuringia's AfD chairman Björn Höcke for lunch: former head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Hans-Georg Maaßen. He sees the question of a ban proceedings against the AfD very differently. The prerequisites for this are not met, he says. He believes that a ban proceedings could be abused to prevent a fundamental course correction planned by the AfD and also to push an unwelcome competitor off the political playing field. There must first be a discussion about a ban on the Left Party, so his counter-proposal. A video of the committee session can be seen on the website of the Thuringian State Parliament. Hape Kerkeling's appearance begins after 6 hours, 42 minutes. Netiquette for comments Your name E-mail The content of this field will not be publicly displayed.
