The rise of the AfD and the failure of the established parties result from the failure of politics to ensure social justice and from society's lack of willingness to consistently combat right-wing radical tendencies.
The text is an interview with the former Berlin state parliament member Hakan Tas about the results of the 2026 Berlin state parliament election. Tas explains the Left's electoral victory by the successful framing of the issue of rising rents and by the personal credibility of the candidate Elif Sahin. He sharply criticises the SPD for having supported social cuts in the federal government, which he considers a betrayal of its own voters. Responsibility for the rise of the AfD is attributed not only to the current federal government under Chancellor Merz but to society as a whole and to the established parties, which would have ignored right-wing radical tendencies for a long time. Tas argues for winning back protest voters through honest politics and a focus on social justice, rather than looking for the fault solely with individuals. He emphasises that walls in people's minds must be torn down and warns of further radicalisation if democratic parties abandon their social role.

And beyond that, there is a artificially created debate. Is the Left a party that is antisemitic, right? And the Left has always publicly stood firmly against antisemitism, and there are party congress resolutions that are clear and distinct, and the leading figures of Gregor Gisi, Dmsch, Bodor Hamelo, Heider Reicheneck, and Iner Schwertner, but also Elif Verhalb, have clearly emphasized that they are not a party that takes in antisemites. The Social Democrats have now, in the federal government, very recently accepted all the social cuts. They bear responsibility for that, and a party that wants to be socially just has, in my view, given up on itself. It cannot be that it is only about participating in the government, that they take on ministerial posts, so to speak, and then save themselves personally, but they no longer take the social democratic voters with them, and that is why they are also losing so strongly in Germany. March and the federal government are certainly partly to blame for the fact that the AfD has received so much support in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as well as in Saxony-Anhalt, so many votes. But to make March alone, so to speak, responsible for the fact that the AfD is so strong, I think we would be making the whole thing too simple. Mm. Uh, we are all, uh, the entire society is co-responsible for that. Berlin has voted. The House of Representatives was elected on September 20, 2026. And how does it continue now? What is the situation like now in our city? I would like to discuss this with our guest Hantas. Hatas was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives for the Left from 2011 to 2021. He has been engaged for many years for social justice, anti-racism, and societal cohesion. Is that correct? That is correct to that extent. Yes. Uh, nice that you are here. Nice that I am allowed to be here. A very beautiful good day. Yes. Uh, you have known me for a long time. You know me well. I can, I can even confirm that. Yes, exactly. And your opinion has always been important to me, uh, not only as a former member of parliament, but also as, as we say in Turkish, as an abi, who is an expert in that field, as a member of parliament and as a journalist, and therefore I would like to talk with you, uh, about the results of the Berlin House of Representatives election. I have now tried to introduce a bit, but I would ask you to introduce yourself. So, I was born in 1966 in Erzincan, with a migration to Istanbul at the age of 2. There I lived for 12 years and then to Germany. The first city in Germany was Munich at the time, and about a year later I came to West Berlin. That means, I was able to experience West Berlin, East Berlin, also the opening of the Wall afterwards and, uh, the whole crowds of people immediately afterwards, who rushed to West Berlin and, uh, yes, the coexistence of people from both different states. Uh, from, uh, from both states, Germany became one again, the Federal Republic of Germany, and East Berlin, West Berlin suddenly no longer existed, and all of this I was able to experience and live through, and that is, I think, also an enrichment for me personally and, uh, has probably also shaped my political career, can one claim that? I think so, I have always been a person who has said that walls must go, walls also in people's heads must go, and I am not really the person for borders, and where the borders are so publicly visible, uh, I have always fought for them to be removed, for people to at least be able to remove these barriers themselves. And the people actually did that at the time, and that is a pleasing result. Mhm. Unfortunately, we of course could not change people overall, uh, what people had in their heads. That is to say, racism, fascism was quite certainly also in the German
had existed in the democratic republic before 1989. This was concealed, this was tried to be talked away, but as we have determined in hindsight, it was indeed present there as well. That means, yes, we must try to reach the people. We must try to reach the people who have now, in a way, voted for a certain party out of protest, not only out of protest in my view, but partly also out of conviction voted for a party, but at least those who voted for a party out of protest, we must try, at least try as democratic parties, but as people in this society who naturally accept democratic norms and want to continue to enliven and further develop them. We must win back these people who voted for the AfD out of protest. Mhm. You have immediately dived right into the topic, because I also want to speak about the results of these elections. We have the Left with around 25.7%, who clearly won the election, and then we also have the governing parties CDU and SPD, who clearly lost. Um, what is your most important insight from these results? When we also see that the AfD has clearly gained in Berlin, um, and the SPD at the same time has become the weakest party, of those who never made it into parliament. Yes, the governing parties usually lose, almost always, usually the smaller coalition partners in the coalition lose, usually. At least that had always been the case so far. Um, but we see at least through the development also in Berlin, that both parties can certainly lose. This certainly also has something to do with federal politics at the federal level with the politics of the Merz and SPD coalition, so to speak. A chancellor who was as unpopular as he has been so far, has not existed in German history before. And these results, in my view, can also be related to the fact that in Berlin both the SPD and the CDU lost so clearly. Then we had a lie affair in Berlin with Wegner, who through the power outage in Steglitz-Zehlendorf in the district at least repeatedly lied. Twice the newspapers, um, Tagesspiegel and other newspapers, uncovered his lies and that did not necessarily help the CDU and the election result also clearly underscored this, so to speak, and they quickly chose a replacement candidate, Eas, who I think did not have enough time to make clear what he wants to change, what he wants to do differently, in my view he did not have enough time. On the other hand, there were or are in the city still certain problems that are decisive for the people who want to live in this city, who want to live together peacefully, rents are rising and rising. People can no longer pay the rents from what they earn. And the Left has now made this the main topic and in my view also for this reason among others they won the elections. Furthermore, of course, a woman who is a migrant. And who has been doing politics for the people in the city for years. Um, that is very sympathetic. This of course all contributed to the fact that the Left actually got over 25.7% in this city. Um, before I now get to Elif and Link, one step back to the CDU's failure, because we see even in the McP, I think, are now for the first time a story have the 5% achieved the CDU. There was also such a nice survey, where it was about how they assess what the role of Merz is in this defeat and 99% say, Merz is partly to blame. We also observe a bit that federal politics itself is always so supportive in the be it local elections or also somehow in the state parliament elections. Um, how do you assess that,
the role of March and the SPD? March and the federal government are certainly partly to blame for the fact that the AfD has received so much support in both Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony-Anhalt, that it has received so many votes. But to hold March solely responsible, so to speak, for the AfD being so strong, I think we would be making the whole thing too simple. Mm. Uh, we are all, uh, the entire society is co-responsible for this, but especially, of course, the politicians who have been shaping, co-responsible for, and responsible for the fact that the right-wing radical development in Germany is actually as it is. Not even a single application to ban the AfD has been filed so far, even though many state offices for the protection of the constitution have classified this party accordingly as right-wing extremist. And in this regard, it is always the question of how seriously we take these developments in Germany at all and how we deal with them? But to hold March or the CDU solely responsible, so to speak, for what is currently happening in Germany. Before that, we had a three-party coalition, a traffic light government, uh, SPD, Greens, and FDP. Mm, these parties also were not able to solve the problems in Germany, and we had, in the last 25 years, I believe, if I am not mistaken, also had the Left Party in government for over 16 years. The Left Party also was not able to contribute back then to rents actually being lowered. On the contrary, rents are rising and rising. That means, we must approach people and try to clarify the open questions together with people and provide them with answers to these open questions and discuss together how we can actually solve the problems. Instead of giving more and more, uh, war aid, uh, sending more and more, uh, war goods to Ukraine, or that different countries are attacked and we tacitly accept the whole thing, we must think about how we can contribute to peace talks finally being resumed. Um, so I would say now, um, media comments are not the standard, but such an image, so the feeling of people. Um, out of interest, I looked at the pages of the SPD after the election, what people are writing in, and there is a lot of criticism, also from so many SPD voters, who simply say, okay, social democracy currently feels like it does not exist in some way. So, what does the SPD stand for anymore? How do you assess it? The social democrats have, in the federal government, now currently accepted all the social cuts. They bear responsibility for that, and a party that wants to be socially just has, in my view, given up on itself. It cannot be that it is only about participation in government, that they take on ministerial posts, so to speak, and then save themselves personally, but they no longer take the social democratic voters with them, and that is why they are also losing so strongly in Germany, also losing so strongly in Berlin in the last elections, we saw, they have, I believe, if I am not mistaken, only 22 seats left in the Berlin House of Representatives. In Spandau, they have lost one seat today, as far as I am informed, uh, the major parties, so the Greens, CDU, and SPD each lost one seat, the Left Party lost two seats, and the AfD has gained one more constituency, right? And that makes it, I believe, very clear that we simply need to be careful that the social democrats, the major democratic bourgeois parties, must be all the more careful that we do not lose even more voters to the AfD, but that we try to win these people back with truly honest politics. Um, I have the feeling
In the past, when something political went wrong or when an election was lost, there seemed to be more consequences, in the sense that more people drew consequences from it. But now, whether it is the SPD or the CDU, no matter what happens, the top remains the same. Hmm, I recently had a conversation with someone comparing this to Turkey, where there is also this, how do you say it, the love for the chair, or however you would translate it. Hmm, maybe it is also that the parties are becoming less credible, because, for example, if Lars Klingbeil or Saskia Esken lose so many elections and keep sinking further and there are never any consequences, then at some point it is no longer credible, right? So the SPD is an example for my question. Well, there has indeed been a change at the top of the SPD. Esken is gone, and in her place came Baerbock, who is also a former President of the Bundestag, and is now the Minister, among other things, for the area of labor and social affairs. There was indeed a change there. Whether she has fully met the responsibility, I do not think so. Klingbeil should actually also have been replaced by new people, new faces, but that is an internal SPD problem. It must, of course, be dealt with within the party itself and solutions found there, including personnel solutions. It cannot be that the people who are, so to speak, responsible for an electoral disaster, who share responsibility for it, still cling to their chairs, and they must, when the time comes, admit mistakes, but admitting mistakes and apologizing for them is, in my view, not enough. They must actually vacate that chair and make way for other people who are supported within the party, within the party structures, and who are suitable for it, professionally suitable for it, who must then take on responsibility. We certainly need social democracy in the republic, in Germany, and we equally need other democratic parties, which must become stronger, not weaker, because otherwise democracy in Germany will be lost. Now, let's talk about personnel. Elif Sherkawat has gained massively, so the Left as such, and she was also very present. Do you think it has something to do with Elif Sherkawat herself, or was she simply in the right place at the right time, or do you want to attribute the success of the Left to her? I think both. She was in Berlin at the right time and she was nominated as a candidate at the right time, and she was indeed visible in the election campaign, and it was an election campaign that was also truly media-effective. A debate. Within the Left, she wanted to disenfranchise the rich and introduce a wealth tax and somehow be there for the poor. And then there was an artificially created antisemitism debate, which, in my view, also contributed to the fact that, especially because what was and is being accused of the Left is not true, certain voters, voter groups, said all the more, we are now voting for the Left, and that certainly brought an additional one to five percentage points for the Left, and through that Elif Sherkawat naturally became even stronger. And furthermore, there is an artificially created debate: is the Left a party that is antisemitic, right? And the Left has always stood for the fact that, through the party, the right of Israel to exist has never been called into question. Where the Left was in a position of responsibility and took on responsibility, there were no cuts, at least not in the funds spent on Jewish institutions. And
The Left has always publicly stood firmly against antisemitism, and there are party congress resolutions that are clear and distinct, and the top figures Gregor Gisi, DM Bch, Bodor Hamelo, Heide Reicheneck and Iner Schwertner, but also Elif Veral, have clearly emphasized that they are not a party that accepts antisemites, and those who express themselves in an antisemitic manner and those who question the right to existence of Israel should not look for a place in this party. And yet, despite all this, despite these public statements, public declarations, despite party congress resolutions, The Left is slandered. There are malicious rumors, and we must get away from that. For that reason, The Left must take an even more prominent stance on the issue and say, these are our party congress resolutions. We are not an antisemitic party, quite the opposite. There is also an expulsion motion in the party district association here in Berlin-Mitte, and this will probably be decided accordingly. In this regard, The Left is also taking the right and important steps, and I think The Left will ultimately actually take responsibility in Berlin and form the coalition. The first talks are already underway. At least preliminary talks, right? And then there will be exploratory talks, and then coalition talks will be conducted with each other, and I think Berlin has no alternative. Berlin has actually voted for red-red-green or red-green-red, and in this regard, the next mayor in Berlin will ultimately actually be called erhalb. Hmm, I don't know how you see it, I find it a bit difficult that, for example, the SPD then published a statement, saying, we are working together on rents. Some of the Green politicians too. As a democrat and as someone interested in politics, I found it difficult that such a thing happened. Not because it is substantively wrong, but because it felt like they jumped on this Springer propaganda and I would have somehow felt like saying, okay, then don't participate, because somehow this also adds salt to the wound. Of course, one should talk about the fact that there are problems, but I found it a bit populist. I know how you see it, well, before the election campaign and after the election campaign, after the elections, so before the election campaign or in the middle of the election campaign and afterwards, it always looks different. That means, in order to get votes, in order to get additional votes, one naturally says something completely different before the election campaign and then says expropriation, we are not going to participate in that. But there is a clear decision, a popular referendum in Berlin, right? Where the people decided that larger corporations, housing corporations, housing companies can and should actually be expropriated. And for that, Berlin should then initiate real steps. And I think there are parts of the SPD that speak against it, which also took this path during the election campaign. Among others, the lead candidate Krach, who has currently taken on a different task, namely the task with Daria Charlar. These two will be the future group leaders in the Berlin House of Representatives. That means, he will not take on a Senate post, as he has also publicly explained. And since he will not take on responsibility in the government, I do not see any problems in the future. As I said, before the elections or during the election campaign, there are things one likes to say, so to speak, populist tones, but fortunately there are then reasonable people who take the right path after the election campaign and at least get people or party representatives into conversation. Hmm, I find it a pity at the CDU, I have to say first, because somehow I find that democratic
Parties at this level should remain, even if it is an election campaign or if one formulates it sharply, uh, that they very often compare the Left with the far-left in some way or put them in the same breath, saying the AfD, the far-right, but also the Left. Uh, do you think that this leads to the far-right danger being talked down, by simply constantly equating another democratic party with extremists? Yes, Durus, but the CDU is a completely different party. The CDU and CSU have federal party congress resolutions rejecting any cooperation with the Left, just as with the AfD, and therefore a debate within the CDU/CSU on this matter must naturally take place. Whether they will then open up to the Left or be able to open up is, of course, an open question. We have to see how a government can at least come about in Saxony-Anhalt, whether a government comes about there and which parties will ultimately support a government that can be formed there. Whether parts of the BSW will then participate in Saxony-Anhalt. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern it is quite different. There the CDU does not have to cooperate with the Left, as it is no longer represented in the state parliament, having remained below 5%. But we must naturally, at least on a democratic level, in the future. Here such debates could perhaps also be initiated, not by parties, but independently of parties, that parties that are then regarded as democratic, so classified, not only by party members, but also beyond that by the population, are seen in such a way that talks with each other are actually possible at different levels, that these talks must be promoted, and that at the end these talks may lead to party leaders being able to get along and perhaps talk to each other about how future cooperation between democratic parties in Germany
