Political authenticity and the commitment to equal opportunity, climate protection, and the defense of liberal values are necessary to shape a peaceful and just society in times of upheaval.

I will not allow people to say that a so-called prosperous economy and climate protection are incompatible, because we have seen growth in employment figures, revenue, and profits in the areas of GreenTech and DeepTech, and that is why I want North Rhine-Westphalia to become a modern industrial location and to set the framework conditions for that.

The text is an excerpt from a podcast conversation with Mona Neubaur, the deputy Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, who speaks about her political convictions and goals. She emphasizes authenticity and genuineness as central qualities of good politics and describes the need to remain true to one's fundamental beliefs and to defend even uncomfortable positions. She finds ritualized intra-party and coalition disputes exhausting, and encounters with people from all social strata beautiful. She outlines political goals for the state election in North Rhine-Westphalia, including the modernization of the economy, climate protection, and equal opportunity. She emphasizes the importance of the Basic Law and the fight against racism and antisemitism. She speaks about her solidarity with her Jewish fellow citizens and the confrontation with hatred that comes with it. The text links political shaping with the protection of liberal values and responsibility for future generations.

To constantly look at where one must, so to speak, sharpen the legal situation? Where must one categorize things differently, because societies are changing? Because the world is changing? Because, if you will, a world discourse is changing? And in this regard, it is personally completely clear to me that my unwavering solidarity is with our Jewish fellow citizens here in North Rhine-Westphalia, but honestly, all over the world. Yes, hello to a new episode of the unorthodoxy YouTube podcast for the undecided with me, very eleven. Yes, and today I am a guest at the Ministry of Economics of North Rhine-Westphalia with Mona Neubauer, the Deputy Prime Minister of NRW. She will receive the Josef Neuberger Medal from the Jewish Community of Cologne at the end of October. And in the conversation, she will tell me what significance this medal has for her on the one hand, and on the other hand, we will also talk about her engagement for Jewish life and also for Israel. First of all, thank you very much, Mona, for being received here in your ministry and for taking the time for my podcast. Very, very gladly. Welcome to the 20th floor with a fantastic view over the or Cologne to the Bonn-Rhine-Isar River. New is, of course, not to be forgotten. Hello. Not to be forgotten, not at all. Then I start directly with my first question. What do you think makes a good politician, respectively, female politician? I would say authenticity, that for the people who observe one, a line is comprehensible, and a line naturally has something to do with content. I believe that content always derives from the compass one carries within oneself, as a person, personality, person in the political and societal sphere. And therefore, I believe that in the end, it is authenticity, remaining so to speak, faithful to one's basic convictions and standing up for them. So, saying things at certain points that do not receive much applause, or advocating for things that are important, even if they are not currently hegemonic in opinion. What qualities would you say one needs, first, to reach people, to inspire them with one's own way, and now especially in your case as a female politician? I believe that if one as a female politician does not bring the basic prerequisites to like people, then it is difficult to inspire people. And this is not always a task one may take on, being a female politician in a society that is so free from efforts or tension and pressure. And therefore, I believe it is important that one somehow has a little fire within oneself, a certain passion for the common good, for a society that can live together peacefully. And if it goes really well, then people notice that, and then one can, so to speak, warm others with the little fire for a political idea, for the commitment to a liberal democracy, for our Basic Law. And I believe that is what one should bring as a female politician. What would you say is, on the one hand, the most exhausting and on the other hand the most beautiful thing about being a female politician? Well, speaking for myself, I would say that the most exhausting things are really ritualized patterns of behavior from intra-party disputes, from disputes within a coalition, from government and opposition. And with this, I explicitly speak for dispute, but against what is ritualized. I believe that is simply energy that one could better use to say, can we please focus on conducting the dispute with each other where it is really worthwhile, where people notice, ah, okay, here is a directional distinction or so. And I personally find it exhausting when one, so to speak, has to say something now because it is ritualized. Or now one must absolutely not say something if one is it must correspond, so to speak, to what is not, so to speak, close to me. And what is most beautiful are actually the many, many opportunities. If I may say so, as a Minister I have an incredible privilege. I am equipped with the possibilities to truly shape things in North Rhine-Westphalia. I am also, moreover, the Deputy Prime Minister and thus have the responsibility, so to speak, to represent the green part of the state government in matters that go far beyond what concerns the Ministry of Economics. And this privilege leads me, very, very often, to encounters with people I would not have met in my life otherwise. It leads me into situations I would not have experienced. And I think about this a great deal. I am fully aware that this is power for a limited time and that it has a lot to do with trust, but that I am allowed to have this, that I am in direct contact with the breadth of society, with apprentices, with primary school girls, with victims, with female scientists, with entrepreneurs, and can discuss things with them. That is truly the best thing about the job. In May, there are state elections in NRW. What political goals do you still have? Yes, they are actually on April 25 next year. It will be about us showing in NRW that we, as a political force, and by that I mean the Greens, are a substantial part of ensuring that this state government governs constructively and thereby works through things, so to speak, step by step. And there are many things in the status quo that obviously create problems. Let me say, from my ministry alone, we are just coming from the summer here in Düsseldorf, good heavens, if one was out in the city at night, it smelled of ammonia, because too little fresh water came into the sewer system and one smelled, so to speak, what happens when infrastructure that is not prepared for it then, so to speak, reaches its limits. And the Rhine was a trickle, an estimated 35 billion in economic damage, and therefore the topic of modernizing our economy, our middle class, our industry with a strong craft sector remains, of course, the core task of what I know, there are so many determined and courageous people who run companies, who want to found companies. Who have good ideas at our universities and to support them, to give them the best possible framework. In a state that is simply capable of acting, because it is uncomplicated, because it is becoming more and more digital, that is one of the major points. I do not allow it to be said that, so to speak, a prosperous economy and climate protection cannot go together, but we have seen growth in employment numbers, in revenue and profit in the area of GreenTech, of DeepTech, and therefore I want North Rhine-Westphalia to become a modern industrial location and to set the framework conditions for that. This means showing, as a large national economy, North Rhine-Westphalia, that one can do business successfully within the limits of our planet. Then we have a unique selling point in Germany and Europe, which radiates out to the whole world. That is what it is about, it is about translating technological leadership into market leadership. That is, driven by the firm conviction that we, as human beings, need an intact nature to have a good life, drives me, and I also really have many ideas about what still needs to be done. And the other thing, which I believe will be very decisive, is that people must realize that there is a political force that understands that things must proceed more fairly in our country, in North Rhine-Westphalia. We do a lot for that. For example, as the state government, we have said that we cut the least, we must save given the economic situation and the necessities of relief that we, so to speak, provide as a state. But we spare the areas that concern children and young people, because that is our future. And what preoccupies me is that we are undergoing a demographic change where there is a minority without protection: those who are small today or have not yet been born, who are growing up in an absolute minority position. They will never be able to constitute the majority of voters in democratic elections, but they will have to rely on those who sit in the seats of decision-making to say, “We have your perspective in view; we take seriously to whom the future belongs.” And this has a lot to do with improving our education and vocational training pathways beyond what they are today, so that we truly move away from the notion that it is decisive whether the parents are pre-educated, in which case the children have better chances of achieving upward mobility, but rather that schools are places where children, so to speak, experience true equality of opportunity. And linked to this, equality of opportunity means that it must not matter where the children come from, how they look, or whom they believe in. And we notice that we have a truly strong polarization in our society. This has something to do with the fact that perspectives are lacking for people in times of upheaval and these stacked crises. It is also, in a way, individually understandable to say, “Honestly, I have no idea how things are supposed to continue from here?” I believe we can then make an offer: where should the journey go for an election campaign at the end of April 2027. And part of it must be that what we have here is to be able to live freely and safely. To have a Basic Law that is as strong a constitution as in few other parts of the earth, which is something we must not take for granted. It is not the case that once it is written down, it is clear to everyone that this is our foundation; rather, one must explain it. One must fight for it. One must argue with people about the fact that one wants to be free as a human being, that one wants to make free decisions, that one does not want there to be discrimination, that there is racism, that there is antisemitism, and to conduct this argument. This is the task of mobilizing for liberal values, against those who, with simple answers, truly try in a populist way to keep people in this polarization for as long as possible, because only then do these political movements and parties, so to speak, have a justification for their existence. This must be the task: to tell people, “Here are those who have understood that this is a generational task. We have a great legacy to uphold. It is important, so to speak, to recall from history what there is actually to do in this time? North Rhine-Westphalia has just turned 80 years old. This is a great commitment for the future: to address the question of justice, the question of participation, and the question of what prosperity actually looks like in the 21st century? How do we ensure that people in times of digitalization are not left behind, but can participate more in decision-making, have more participation? These are great tasks. But for these, one can inspire people to come to the side of those who say, “These are not natural forces. This can be shaped if people have the opportunity to participate in it.” I will say, especially when one publicly takes the side of Jews or also of Israel, one is inevitably confronted with hatred. How do you deal with this as a politician or also as a human being? I myself am not of Jewish faith. And therefore I cannot really fathom how it is, as a person of Jewish faith, to live in Germany? When I speak with our fellow citizens of Jewish faith and they tell me, “I would feel safer in Israel than Here, then all my alarm bells go off, because in Israel there has been war since October 7th. And to hear that people who live here, who can actually live a good life here, should seriously think about moving to a war zone, moving to a region that is the site of the conflict, where it is precisely decided whether one tries to support this democracy and those who in Israel say, we want a liberal democracy and we want to be the place where the ideologues and the extremists do not prevail, then that means there is something to do. And then that means, if one is confronted with hatred there, if one is confronted with threats of violence, then as a politician like me, first of all, one must use all the possibilities that the rule of law already offers and to show that we will not simply tolerate this, but clearly raise one’s voice for those whom you threaten, because if you threaten them, you threaten me as well, because I am a representative of the fact that those here can live freely and safely, and there is also the necessity to constantly look at where one must, so to speak, tighten the legal situation, where one must categorize things differently, because societies change, because the world changes, because, if you will, a global discourse changes, and in this regard it is perfectly clear to me personally that my unwavering solidarity is with our Jewish fellow citizens here in North Rhine-Westphalia, but honestly speaking, all over the world. And for exactly this commitment you are now being awarded the Josef Neubberger Medal of the Jewish community of Düsseldorf. What does this honor mean? Well, when I learned about it and now it happens again, I really got goosebumps, because for me, if I may say so, it somehow felt like okay, people, this is too much honor. I am not doing that. What I always do in my commitment for a society that clearly positions itself against right-wing extremism. A society that clearly states that Islamist extremism must be pushed back. Antisemitism is not an opinion, but a criminal offense to be prosecuted. That is for me so self-evident that I actually think that one does not even have to be awarded for it, and if one looks at who has already received this medal, it is a totally strong boost of motivation and a confirmation that I have really, so to speak, sat down almost in humility and said, okay, here we do not let up. There are people who notice what needs to be done. There are people who see that and that perhaps gives them strength even in very difficult situations. I have had conversations with the truly fantastic residents of the Nelly Sacks parents’ home, up at the aquazoo. There sit people who could be my grandparents. Partly already, if they became grandmothers very young, for example, and speaking with them and realizing that they totally get it, what is Neubauer actually doing there? They are as critical as hardly anyone else and say, explain to us why, does your party do that at this point? What are you doing, because this party does that? Have you seen that this is happening? These are things that I believe perhaps do not completely lose hope, that they are not alone, that it is not forgotten what our responsibility is as women and men of democracy, and that they can rely on the fact that this commitment, so to speak, comes from the heart in my case, that I use what I can for that, that it is also, so to speak, effective in order to increase protection and to enhance freedom and security for our fellow citizens of Jewish faith. And therefore it is anything but, so to speak, a medal for a shelf, but a medal that in my heart perhaps makes things a little more golden and strengthens me for the difficult moments that there in this clarity, which I also certainly possess, I know why I am doing it. And you have asked me, Michelle Friedmann, to be the Laudator. What makes him so special? How did you get to know each other, and why did the choice fall on him? Well, Michelle Friedmann is, I believe, one of the very, very few intellectuals we still have in the German-speaking world. In his biography, Michelle Friedmann has been someone who has never shied away from finding more distinct and clear words. Michelle Friedmann has an activist fundamental impulse, and I would say, if one is with the Greens, one can certainly find value in this activism, this so-to-speak very passionate, truly something to appreciate. It helps me, speaking with him, listening to him, because he, if you will, actually condenses things to the essential. And that is to bring the focus back to the human being. And to have this clarity, I find that fits very well with what I have gathered in experiences when we visited Tel Aviv in March or April 2024. Members of the Jewish community of Düsseldorf were also present, Bert Römmkens accompanied us. That is the most impressive thing one can experience. And Michelle Friedmann embodies that so strongly. How large are the hearts of the people living in Israel? How reconciliatory, in the face of the largest terrorist attack on people of Jewish faith in Israel, carried out by the Hamas terrorists, and how do those affected then look at it? Relatives of the killed victims, victims who themselves were victims of this attack, and how deeply do they, so to speak, look into the hearts and into the humanity that exists, and that is what Michelle Friedmann embodies in a manner, in a rhetoric. I highly recommend, for those who have not yet done so, the speech he recently delivered in Bayreuth at the Wagner Festival. Wagner and Katharina Wagner are taking a real step, namely to critically examine what role the Wagner empire actually played during the Nazi era. To critically work through that is an important step that is finally being taken. And in that sense, Michelle Friedmann delivered a speech on this, which can be found on the internet and which is truly worth every single word, because he analyzes with a stinging sharpness, but creates a commitment that leads one into reflection. And exactly that, combined with an openness, with a warmth, with a joy of life, is what I have always, so to speak, experienced in conversations with Michelle Friedmann. I got to know him with great admiration. That was already some time ago. I believe he did not even notice who I was. And ultimately, so to speak, the longer conversations took place in the context of the awarding of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in Frankfurt, where it is truly a great pleasure to speak with him, so to speak, around this event, if one does not simply speak with him. What does not work with him is small talk, but he has a message and it is an important message for our republic, and therefore, I believe, he also had something to say to us on that evening. So we are definitely very much looking forward to it. In this room, we have jointly experienced former hostages and their relatives. You wore the yellow ribbon at public appearances directly after October 7th. Until, I believe, October 13th, when the last hostages were released. What does this yellow ribbon mean to you? The Jewish community also ensures today that the fate of the victims does not fall into oblivion. There is the football cup, which regularly takes place in Bissurdorf, where a team of a killed young man, so to speak, enters the sporting competition with teams, also here in North Rhine-Westphalia, here in Bissurdorf. And it may be that all victims, living and dead, now, so to speak, that the has found an end for the families to be in uncertainty. But that by no means implies that what they have experienced—truly destructive and life-alteringly changing moments—is over. And because I try to imagine how terrible that is, it was important to me to use this yellow ribbon to express that you are not alone in this. I see a commitment in this. I see that you exist. I see that the entire family has been thrown completely out of orbit. And that is why it was important to me. That is why I endured every statement and message, and so to speak, every change related to the criminal act, with a high head and a straight back, because the victims and their relatives from this terrorist attack are truly close to my heart. And because it is a simple gesture or symbolism, if you will. And I hope that it has expressed something to the people who have perceived it. And what was fed back to me was that it did. And that, as I said, is almost a matter of course. But it was important to me. So I can only speak for the football team now, because we have very close contact with them; they all love you. So you don’t need to worry about that. I love them too; they are truly strong. Through your open and public solidarity w

Hallo. Man muss darum streiten. Was bedeutet diese Ehrung? Was macht ihn so besonders?
