Christians are called to make their Christian identity visible through practical neighborly love, in which the Gospel and concrete help are inseparably linked, and the church must find new forms of social engagement in today's society.
The text deals with the question of whether Christians must have a visible social impact. Benjamin Schumacher reports that the book 'Erlassia Theologie' challenged him because he had previously interpreted biblical statements about freeing prisoners and giving bread to the hungry too much in a purely spiritual sense. He emphasizes that the Gospel is received when people experience that they are truly loved. Annegret Schumacher emphasizes that the main task is to lead people to Jesus Christ, and that every Mary eventually becomes a Martha, who then serves. The two tell of their own experience of starting a weekly children's program in refugee shelters and reaching approximately 200 children and families over three years. They speak about the tension between their own exhaustion and the desire to make their Christian identity visible, and report on concrete encounters in their congregation. The text concludes with the call to ask God where he needs you, and to share your own stories.

Must Christians have a social impact? Must it be noticeable to us as Christians that we live with Jesus? On this exciting topic, I want to talk with dear Benny today. Welcome. Yes. Hi Anne Gret. It’s nice that you’re tuning in to this Real Talk. Benny, what does social impact look like in your life? Can you see it? That’s such a steep question. Wow, you really caught me off guard. May I tell you what my social impact looked like? [laughter] Yes, so if I’m being completely honest, it’s currently a topic that really occupies me, because I read a book, uh, the Theology of the Decree, and specifically, that Jesus in his inaugural sermon, yes, quotes Isaiah 61, and there it says, I will set the captives free and all these wonderful things again, uh, give people back what they lack. And I realized that I have often only viewed my life in a spiritual way and no longer focused on this matter, as it really stands there, giving bread to the hungry and all these things. That’s why I’m currently very challenged in this regard. You’re probably asking because of that, but I would say that I already have a very high social heartbeat, because I know that, uh, the Gospel is received when people experience that I truly love them, and I have to show them that. Let’s start from the Bible, look into the Bible, and then you can know exactly, I know, we also have a bit of personal history with the topic, uh, when you open the Bible, what do you see there, what our calling as Christians, as followers of Jesus, is to have this very practical impact in the area of neighborly love? I believe the very first calling is that a person who does not know Jesus Christ first has no life, because we need Jesus Christ to have real life. Therefore, the main task of us as the church is to lead people to Jesus Christ, to follow Him. And that is also our vision statement, that Jesus, that we people, that we become more like Jesus Christ, then fearlessly, in order to then change our environment. So, it must always be a fruit of that. A bit like the picture of Mary and Martha. Uh, Mary, who lay at the feet of Jesus, got to know Him. But from every Mary eventually becomes a Martha, who then serves, but not from every Martha, who simply just fiddles around, becomes a Mary, who gets to know Jesus. And I believe, therefore, there is already an order, that we have the task of bringing people close to Jesus Christ, uh, in order to then exert a social influence. What do you say? Francis of Assisi is said to have said, go to all people, preach the Gospel, and if necessary, use words for it. Yes, I don’t like that sentence at all. [laughter] You are my wife. Questioned. Yes. No, I don’t like that sentence at all. Uh, because I believe we live rather in a speechless society, at least in Germany, where we are not brave enough to talk about the Gospel. I believe, I know what Francis Francis meant by that, that only Gospel without showing love is nothing. So I always need both, but I believe, hey, let’s always tell the Gospel. I found the better answer was, uh, uh, never do good without telling about Jesus. Never tell about Jesus without doing good. I found that better. So, it goes, I’ll summarize it like this. The most important thing people need is this relationship with God. Uh, but they often also need practical help, and the way in which I can show them love, how I can perhaps also open their heart. Yes, for the Gospel is exactly through this practical help, because when I open the Bible, I see very, very many exhortations, both in the Old Testament as well as with Jesus in the New Testament, to do good, to help, to free people from oppression, to be light and salt, to really have an impact in the visible. Uh, and I
I believe that this is also a mandate that we are permitted to embrace, and at the same time, we see, for example, in our society, where people are helped on a social level through social welfare, but the Gospel is missing; it is, so to speak, merely a small piece, a band-aid in that moment, but it does not, so to speak, resolve their inner distress. Yes, that is the summary. Yes, and that is truly the tension in which we, as Christians, as the Church, currently find ourselves, namely that we have the luxury of having a state that essentially covers all social needs first. So, almost every need is met by the state, which was originally actually the special task of us Christians, where people could recognize that we were there for the poor, the homeless, the widows, and the orphans, and then everyone saw, wow, they care for them, what is different there? And then we could say: "Hey, from the power of Jesus." And therefore, I find it somewhat difficult for us as churches to get involved there. Hmm, but I think we are permitted to translate what social needs still exist, and that is a lot of loneliness or the biblical abuse issues, all these things, but I believe where we can definitely go in more, I am speaking of our church, perhaps also of the Church of Germany, is truly to revive the social aspect again and to connect it with the Word of Jesus. Now we ourselves, yes, because I do not know, because I am part of it, also have a story with this topic. We were, namely, in our theology studies, many years ago, asked a very challenging or exciting question, which also brought us to reflect deeply at this point. Take us in there for a moment. Yes, we were in a seminar and there the question was asked: Who would cry if your church no longer existed tomorrow? And how many friends from an older cultural sphere do you have? We wrestled with this question as a married couple and had to arrive at a result. We are in a beautiful church, but if it no longer existed tomorrow, most people would probably simply go to another church. The mayor would not even notice. And so, after prolonged deliberation, we made a decision. What did we do? Yes, we decided, let us live our Christianity visibly outwardly. Then we did not know how to start and looked around to see if there were simply people in the neighborhood whom we could help, such as old people doing shopping, helping to carry groceries in. And so we sought such paths and then discovered that near where we lived at the time, there was a refugee shelter, and we simply started going there and playing with the children, simply building contact. There were already many, very many children, and also many who carried a lot of responsibility, because always the older siblings had to look after the babies, and they were new to Germany, and so on and so forth. And we started a weekly program, like a kind of, so to speak, ICF Kids, with the children in this mixture of "We simply give them our time with the Gospel, but also with joy, with fun, with lightness, with relationship, speaking to them of worth and identity." And we had many personal relationships that grew. We gladly celebrated Christmas with the families. Yes, we celebrated Christmas with the families. We went on vacation with a family. I built a friendship with an Iranian with whom I also went on vacation multiple times. So, we really shared their lives, and after 3 years we were in three refugee shelters, had reached approximately 200 children and families, and had passed on the love of God to them, and
we tried to address their social needs as far as we could. Then, in our case, we moved, so we didn’t continue there. Uh, if you’re being honest today, I’d say, you’ve already mentioned a bit that this topic challenges you, and I believe every one of us knows that. We are aware of this social heartbeat; we know that God has such a love for people, and that love is allowed to show itself in practical ways. But right now, my life is the way it is. I come home tired from work; I might be completely worn out myself. Uh, how do you deal with this tension? For example, your friend is laying a new lawn, and you know it would actually be time to help him. But it doesn’t fit into my schedule. Yes, that was our discussion last night. A friend laying a lawn. Of all days, on my day off, when I actually have a date with you tomorrow, should I help my friend now? Yes, I’m torn inside, but what do we always do? We ask Jesus: Is it really time to help there? Then, of course, we talk as a married couple. Uh, do we want to set ourselves free there? Because I believe the saying applies: “Seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be added to you.” Not every need is a calling; that’s clear. Not every roll of turf that is to be laid is a calling for me to help my friend. But deep inside, I truly have the desire to make my Christianity visible. And in recent weeks, I’ve heard such moving stories from our church. For example, a young woman who met a young man who has no parents, and now she visits him at her family’s home every other day. That touched me so much. She says, yes, it disrupts my entire daily routine, but Jesus has made me ready, and we want to be a family for him. Or another married couple from our church who met an 80-year-old man while shopping who had collapsed, and since then, a friendship has developed. They meet for coffee, they help with shopping, and these things are woven into everyday life so that it becomes something natural. And we consciously stretch ourselves, and then Jesus actually opens doors too. And then, yes, it may cost me something. And then I say to Jesus, it costs me everything this evening. Thank you for taking care of me. Yes, and with that, we bless you, that you have an open heart to simply ask God where He wants to use you in your environment, and where you are allowed to make room in your life. Feel free to write in the comments what your stories are, where God needs you, where He opens doors to people, perhaps in your neighborhood, at school, at university, at work, where you simply may be light, may help, may share His love. Please share the stories, let us encourage one another, and have fun serving, have fun helping, and you will experience incredibly wonderful testimonies that will build up your faith. So let’s get to work. Yes, let’s go, and until next week. Ciao. Ciao. Ciao.

Was sagst du denn? Also lasst uns anpacken. Yes, let's go und bis nächste Woche. Ciao. Ciao. Ciao.
