The planned removal of the Bavarian climate neutrality target by 2040 would nearly double greenhouse gas emissions in the Free State between 2027 and 2045 and bring climate protection to a standstill.

The planned weakening of the Bavarian Climate Protection Act would nearly double emissions in the Free State, shows a new calculation by Greenpeace Bavaria.

Greenpeace Bavaria calculates that the planned weakening of the Bavarian Climate Protection Act would nearly double greenhouse gas emissions in the Free State. Under the currently applicable law, emissions between 2027 and 2045 would amount to 434 million tonnes of CO2. If the CSU and Free Voters remove the climate neutrality target by 2040, the possible emissions would add up to 827 million tonnes. The state government under Markus Söder could, after the planned amendment, bring climate protection to a complete standstill in the coming two years. In theory, even more greenhouse gases than before would be permitted. The text refers to an online calculation for the traceability of the figures. The core message is a warning about the concrete climate policy consequences of a legislative change.

Munich, 11. 10. 2026 — The planned weakening of the Bavarian Climate Protection Act would nearly double emissions in the Free State, shows a new calculation by Greenpeace Bavaria. If the CSU and Free Voters strike the goal of climate neutrality by the year 2040, which has so far applied to Bavaria, as planned, the then possible greenhouse gases between 2027 and 2045 would add up to 827 million tonnes of CO2. That would be nearly twice as much as under the currently applicable law (434 million tonnes). The state government under Markus Söder (CSU) could, after the planned amendment, bring climate protection to a complete standstill in the coming two years. In theory, even more greenhouse gases would be allowed. The calculation online: https://act.gp/4j9nAJW
