Responsibility · main message Community · carrying Knowledge

The majority of the population in nearly all voter groups demands a faster expansion of renewable energies and energy policy measures that the federal government is not currently implementing sufficiently.

The expectation that Germany will become independent from oil and gas imports more quickly finds a majority in nearly all voter groups; in most, support is even above 80 percent.

The text reports on a representative survey by forsa commissioned by the Climate Alliance Germany, which shows broad support for the faster expansion of renewable energies. In the general population, 75 percent speak in favour of acceleration, with support being high in nearly all voter groups. Economic arguments such as cheaper energy and strengthened competitiveness are also cited as reasons. Respondents also favour measures such as the expansion of public transport, a reduction in the electricity tax, and funding programmes for building renovation. Representatives of the Climate Alliance Germany call on the federal government to implement these majorities and not to further delay existing plans. The text refers to the German Climate Day 2026 in Berlin as the framing event. The methodology specifies a sample of 1,002 persons with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

Support for a faster pace in the expansion of renewable energies is found across nearly all voter groups. In the general population, 75 percent are in favor of acceleration; among supporters of the CDU and CSU, it is 84 percent; among SPD supporters, 97 percent; and among supporters of the Greens and the Left, support is nearly unanimous. When looking at the economy as well, support prevails. 54 percent are of the opinion that the expansion of renewables will strengthen the competitiveness of the German economy in the long term, for example through cheaper energy. Here too, the approval ratings among supporters of the governing parties CDU and CSU (62 percent) and the SPD (80 percent) are above average. Isabel Rutkowski, spokesperson for the Climate Alliance Germany and federal chairwoman of the Catholic Rural Youth Movement of Germany, says: "Anyone who believes that a slower pace of expansion is a response to the will of the population should take a close look at these figures. The expectation that Germany will become independent from oil and gas imports more quickly finds a majority in nearly all voter groups; in most, support is even above 80 percent. For energy policy, this means that the majority is not an obstacle to the pace of expansion but is leading the way." Participants were also asked how policy should respond in the long term to high energy prices. Tied at the top are a stronger expansion and greater promotion of buses, trains, and cycle paths with 82 percent, and a reduction of the electricity tax for all with 79 percent. For both measures, there is also a large majority among supporters of the governing parties: 75 percent of Union voters and 89 percent of SPD voters are in favor of expanding public transport. 73 percent of all respondents consider better funding programs for building renovation and the replacement of old heating systems to be important, 64 percent a significantly cheaper Deutschlandticket, and 60 percent simpler funding for switching to small, affordable electric cars. Viviane Raddatz, Managing Director of Network and Society at the Climate Alliance Germany, comments: "People are saying quite precisely what they expect. Faster expansion of wind and solar power, buses and trains that run and are affordable, and funding for heating system replacement that one can rely on. Behind each of these measures stands a clear majority, also among supporters of the two governing parties. The federal government should no longer hold back this expectation, as it is doing with its plans for the grid package, the EEG amendment, or budget cuts to the rail network, but should now make decisions for the people and the economy in our country." On Methodology The data come from a representative survey by forsa commissioned by the Climate Alliance Germany. 1,002 persons were surveyed from 29 September to 1 October 2026; the statistical margin of error is plus/minus 3 percentage points. Background on the German Climate Day On 13 October 2026, the German Climate Day will take place in Berlin. This year, under the motto "Climate Protection with Connection," we are discussing how the phase-out of coal, oil, and gas can be achieved in a socially just manner and how Germany can keep up with a climate-neutral future. Federal Minister of the Environment Carsten Schneider will deliver the welcome address. Leading representatives from politics, business, civil society, and science will discuss current climate and energy policy issues. We expect more than 300 guests on site and around 500 online.
