His Holiness Pope Tawadros II delivered his weekly sermon during the Wednesday gathering this evening from the Papal Residence in Cairo, in the presence of several bishops of the Church, priests of the churches in the Ezbat El-Nakhl sector and their wives. The sermon was broadcast via Christian satellite channels and the C.O.C channel, affiliated with the Church’s Media Center, on the internet. In the sermon, His Holiness continued the series “Spiritual Laws for Life,” and today he spoke about the “Law of Example,” reading part of Chapter 4 of the First Epistle of our Teacher, the Apostle Paul, to his disciple Timothy, verses (6–16). He clarified that the priest must be the exemplary teacher and servant, and that he must support his teaching and service through example. His Holiness continued with the areas of example as follows: 3. Love: To be an example through true love, for the true father is one who seeks the salvation of his children, just as the Prophet Moses did when the people sinned by worshipping the golden calf. Moses interceded for them before God, saying, “NOW IF YOU WILL FORGIVE THEIR SIN, BUT IF NOT, PLEASE BLUR ME OUT OF THE BOOK YOU HAVE WRITTEN” (Exodus 32:32), because he loved his people with true love. Paternal love tolerates the weaknesses of others, retains the heart of the father continuously, and constantly seeks to offer love. 4. Spirit: To be an example by having in you the youthful spirit and the vitality of youth, “FIERCE IN SPIRIT, SERVING THE LORD” (Romans 12:11). Therefore, serving children and youth from time to time is like fuel for your life and your example in spirit, “I REMIND YOU TO FAN INTO FLAME THE GIFT OF GOD THAT IS IN YOU” (2 Timothy 1:6). 5. Faith: To be an example through faith, especially in difficult matters, “FOR WE WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT” (2 Corinthians 5:7), and also in small matters, for faith sees and gives strength to the person, “ALL THINGS WERE MADE THROUGH HIM, AND WITHOUT HIM NOTHING WAS MADE THAT HAS BEEN MADE” (John 1:3). 6. Purity: To be an example in purity (cleanness), “KEEP YOURSELF PURE” (1 Timothy 5:22), in relationships, dealings, and meetings. The priest-father is a meeting point in relationships, encountering the young and the old, both in the church and at home. His Holiness clarified that example is the influencing factor in the other person, and that example has blessings, which are: 1. Example draws people to Christ, not to your person, “HE MUST INCREASE, BUT I MUST DECREASE” (John 3:30). 2. It provides a model for others to become examples themselves, thus expanding the circle, “WHAT YOU HAVE HEARD FROM ME IN THE PRESENCE OF MANY WITNESSES, ENTRUST TO FAITHFUL PEOPLE WHO WILL BE ABLE TO TEACH OTHERS ALSO” (2 Timothy 2:2). The proof of a successful example is that it can lead to another example. 3. Example continues even after its practitioners have passed away, “REMEMBER YOUR LEADERS, WHO SPOKE TO YOU THE WORD OF GOD. CONSIDER THE OUTCOME OF THEIR WAY OF LIFE AND IMITATE THEIR FAITH” (Hebrews 13:7). The value and blessing of example is that it continues, and it glorifies the name of God through a good model. His Holiness indicated that the Lord Christ provided us with an example externally when He washed the feet of the disciples and gave us the lesson of humility. He also provided us with an example internally through love, “NOW BEFORE THE FEAST OF THE PASSOVER, JESUS KNOWING THAT HIS HOUR HAD COME TO GO FROM THIS WORLD TO THE FATHER, HAVING LOVED HIS OWN WHO WERE IN THE WORLD, HE LOVED THEM TO THE END” (John 13:1). He also provided us with an example in influencing the other, “FOR I HAVE GIVEN YOU AN EXAMPLE, THAT YOU SHOULD DO AS I HAVE DONE TO YOU” (John 13:15). His Holiness advised: “Be an example in small situations before big ones, such as in times of anger, and in apologizing for a mistake you have made, and offer your love. Also, example is a responsibility; the priest-father does not live for himself, and his decisions affect the lives of others. The world needs the priest-father as an example in: speech, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity.”
