The investigation of the three states of consciousness (waking, dream, and deep sleep) is the most comprehensive method of Advaita Vedanta for seeing through the illusion of duality and recognizing the single, non-dual reality (Brahman).

Investigating the three states is the all-encompassing, your understanding analysis. That is everything in the waking state. It is not only the waking state, but when I take the waking state as what is, from that vantage point, out of it.

The text explains the Advaita Vedantic teaching that there is only a single reality (Brahman), which is taught in all the Upanishads, even though Western Indologists often overlook this. The speaker argues that various methods, such as the distinction between subject and object or the analysis of the five sheaths (Koshas), ultimately pursue the same goal: the negation of duality. A central point is the investigation of the three states of consciousness: waking, dream, and deep sleep. The waking state is described as a limited perspective from which the world appears real, while the dream state shows that even a seemingly real world can be recognized as an illusion once one wakes up. The method of the three states is considered the 'jewel' because it encompasses all other approaches and reveals the inherent misperception of the waking state. The text emphasizes that true knowledge consists in seeing the apparent multiplicity as mere appearance of the One, similar to a pot made of clay.

O Sahnavabtu, Sahnavunatu, Sahaviriam Karvavahay, Jejasvinavadi Tamastu, Mavid Vashavahay, Bhojshanti Shanti Shanti. So, this will be our final class. And I had said that it would refer to the three states, the three stages, waking, dreaming, deep sleep. Yesterday I actually wanted to convey to you the point that, according to Advaita Vedanta, there is only one method. And that each of the Upanishads uses only this single method, if one knows how to look at it, the Upanishad. This is a quotation; what has always been taught is negated again by the final, ultimate truth. There is only the one without a second. Most Western Orientalists, who are now Indologists, who have approached Advaita Vedanta from the Western academic perspective, have not been able to find any philosophy in the Upanishads. It looks like this, or it looks like this, for those who see it as a little bit of everything. There is a little bit of meditation in it, and the 5 Koshas are discussed a little. There is also a little bit of the Witnessing, the Witness, and that which is Witnessed. But the unifying philosophy, they do not find it. The 4th Sutra of the Brahma Sutra says, Tatu Samanvayat, that there is only one thesis in all the Upanishads. The only reason for this is that there is only one Self, one Reality. That is all it has always been, that is all it is now, and that is all it will always be. Tatu Samanvayat, that is Brahma Sutra 4, and that is, so to speak, the fundamental theme underlying all of them. It is just this one, without a second. This is missed in the approach from the Western academic perspective. In the Upanishads there is Trikhtrishya Vivaika, which is an empty place. This is basically what we also looked at in the Bhagavad Gita, Kshatriya Kshitra Vivaika. In English, this is only the difference between the Wishing and the Wishing. But in Vedanta there is nothing, or there can be nothing, that is Witnessed. So at the end of the expansion, it must negate that there is even a Wishing and that the Wishing is, in that case, the one non-dual, pure Consciousness. It is only one Wishing because something is on the hand. Thus the Witnessed is negated, and so the one who has the Witnessed is ultimately also simply just the one that exists. The problem with Trikhtrishya Vivaika and Ragnar Kshitra Vivaika, that is, the discriminating power of the Witnessing and the Witnessed, how would I think that my Witnessing is not yours or is it yours, the one that witnesses? That is exactly what Patanjali also thought, that there are many Witnesses. That is what the Samkhya philosophers thought, that there are many Purushas, who are pure Consciousness, but many of them. So it is very, very difficult to get from the Witnessing to the one Reality without a second. In the Taitreya Upanishad we have the Teaching of the five Koshas. The five Koshas, the gross Koshas, the karmic Prana Koshas, the Mind Sheath, it is called a Sheath, a Kosha is a Sheath, and the last is the Anandamaya Kosha, the Sheath of Bliss. But of course, if there are five Koshas, then there could not be one Reality without a second. So the idea is that the gross Prana Koshas, the Anandamaya Koshas, the erection of the Prana Koshas, the erection of the Prana Koshas, the grosser dissolves into the subtler. And accordingly also Prana Mayakosha dissolves into the again subtler, into the Mind Sheath. Then Prana Mayakosha dissolves into the again subtler. And the final Sheath Anandamaya Koshas, and this last Kosha ultimately merges into the true Self and thus negates the five Koshas. And then the problem is that my gross body, my Prana, my Mind, my vegan Maya, my Inner-Consciousness and my Bliss state not your body, my Scentz. And here again, or still, is the problem, my gross body, my Prana sheath, my Mind sheath, my inner consciousness is not yours, my Body-Mind-Scentz structure, you are not you, so again the one as the many. But it is the same methodology. In the end, there are no Koshas, no witnesses, no witnesses. Another method, which is demanded in the Upanishads, is the method of cause and effect. The Upanishad says, in the beginning, there was Brahman alone, without a second. It thought, let me become many, be many. Thus space was created, from space came air, from air fire, from fire water, from water earth, the five gross elements. Can Brahman think, let us be many? The demand: Brahman is the cause and the world is the effect, that the cause is like clay and the effect is like a clay plate. I am sorry, but what I just said, the idea behind it is that it behaves like clay to a pot. And then the Upanishad says, Wacharambanam vikara namadeyam. All the effects are just Vacharambanam. Vacharambanam are all these manifestations. You call it a pot, you call it a plate, you call it a clay vessel, but really they're just in truth, just clay alone. Whether it is a pot, whether it is a room, whatever, however you name it, these are only the one. Clay alone is the real. All the manifestations are simply just the creation of language. Simply you have only a little pot, a vase, however named, it has the Namarupa, you gave it a name. But the cause of all this is clay alone. That is everything, what always was, that is what always was, that is simply just what appears. If you destroy the pot, what remains is clay alone. That is the Adi-Europa, deliberate superimposition. The idea that Brahman is the cause of the world, or is it? And that the world is thus the effect, which comes from Brahman. But in Advaita Vedanta there is no world. Sava-i-dham-brahma-eva, all of this is Brahman alone. That is the concluding teaching. So the same method is being used with cause and effect. But of all the methods that we find, that use the same one methodology, from all methods that we find, whose underlying unity, the same methodology, is used. And can one say, or is it, that the method of the three states is the highest and the jewel of the diamond. To examine the three states is the all-encompassing, your understanding analysis. That is everything in the Waking-State. There is not only the waking state, but if I take the waking state as what is from the perspective out of which. I look, that I am here in YogaVidia sitting on this chair, then I look from a limiting perspective. In this chair is everything that was in the waking state, for the moment. We have all had this experience. To now examine what is my truth, what is the truth, I must set aside the inherent error value, the waking state, as such, from which I look. So I should look at the stages, the states, not as if I look at them from the waking state, think about them, because from the perspective of waking this world is real. All of you can see the same that I can see, I can see it, I can hear it, touch it, smell it. Everything has a cause, resulted from a cause, fire generated, what becomes water, means, all the whole science is based on causality. The determinism, that things have effects and products, I know someone, someone might say, how does it look with quantum mechanics. Let us set that aside for the moment. But also quantum mechanics is based on empiricism, which is viewed from the perspective of the waking state. And from the perspective of waking I do not only consider myself and this world as real. And if anyone comes to me and tells me, this world is not real, I can from this state, not only that, I believe that the experiences I have in this wobbly state, when I after the shoes, when I after the shoes, my heart creates a Dream, that is only an Imagination, an imaginary world. And this world, simply from my mind, also has no reality. And then I have another state from the viewpoint of waking, another state, when I am in deep sleep and am not aware of anything, I am unconscious, I am not aware of myself, not aware of the world, nor am I even aware of the absence of the world. We all have these three states and if we look at all of them with or from this state with, that is, with the inherent error value from the perspective of waking, is waking the only real? Do we all believe, whoever this I is, I in the case of this Ira? Am I awake, did I have a dream, was I in deep sleep? And now I am in the same world in which I previously fell asleep or woke up again, I am still sitting here, or the world is still there. So this waking world is there, whether I dream, whether I sleep. It does not simply disappear just because I have a dream or go into deep sleep. Vedanta says all this is correct, as long as we take our standpoint from the viewpoint of the waking state. But as soon as we examine what is the actual experience when I am truly in each respective state? Waking is my experience, dream my experience, I have the experience of deep sleep, when I am not aware of anything there, I say. So if we have all these states and if we are guided to examine each respective state only in parts from each respective state out, then that is a kind of deep sleep. That is a kind of deep sleep. If we have these states and if we are guided to examine each respective state only in parts from each respective state out, then I think that it is possible for us that we see the fact that the dream as soon as the dream appears, I take that as the waking. I think yes, that is real, while I am in the dream. So if someone comes to me in the dream and says, hey, that is only a dream, I do not believe them. I say, last night I had a dream, but now I see you clearly and distinctly. And this tiger that is coming here now, we had better hurry, run quickly. It is not before we wake up that we understand or realize that it was a dream. When the dream appears, that is waking. I think, we all had the experience that when you were in the dream, as you were in the dream, you took it as real. That is what Vedanta takes as dream, the state in which you are and you take it as waking. If you do not think of Yoga-Videi in Germany, and now you wake up here into the dream-world, and you are in the whole waking-state, and now it is a whole turning-state, which appears as real and unreal. What you see, feel and sense, that the dream is real. And what you imagine in your dream, that dream-mind, is unreal. We must see the fact that the waking time, the place of waking and the laws of nature all appear when I am awake. We must see the fact that the waking time, the place of waking and the laws of nature of the waking state all appear when I am awake. As soon as the dream appears, is the growth, the waker-space, the waking-causality, and now it is the growth. It is night, it is morning, and I am in the desert-world, the waking-space and the waking-locks, which are in operation. They have all recognized my waking-experience, as soon as I am in the dream state, the dream state has completely eliminated the waking state. Now the dream time applies, the laws apply, the Dream is the Real. The experience is that the entire dream appeared to me, with the dream-ego, a dream body, a dream world. The subject and the object, both appeared to me. Just as when the waking state appears, the entire waking world-object, I as the subject, I am this subject. My mind, the conscious subject, this ego in the waking state is the subject; I hear, I see, I believe. Thus, the waking ego comes and goes with the waking state. The dream ego comes and goes with the dream state. The waking ego has never gone under. The dream ego never wakes up and has never woken up. And in deep sleep, no waking appears and no dream state appears. When the waking ego appears, there is no dream. When the dream appears, there is no waking. When both disappear, there is neither waking nor sleeping; I am there, the unchanging awareness. I was aware of that which is the Witness, not the waking ego that was aware of this state. I was thus aware of that which, when the dream appeared, when the dream appears, the waking state is canceled. It is not only the waking ego, but also the waking time, the waking causality, all that which appeared in the waking unity, is canceled, as the waking ego, that waking time, that waking causality, that waking time, that waking time, the pressure-formation to expire, sometimes the rotation to expire, the rotation-causality, which is highly accelerated, the pressure-formation is less accelerated, is no longer there, as soon as the dream state, which seems to be the causality, the space-time. Thus, the cities are not, as we once thought, died in a waking state. The Dreamtime is in a dream state. And in the third loop, it is not time. We conventionally take it for granted: I am awake, I dream, I fall into deep sleep, I wake up again. As if all this is in space and time. But it is the waking state in waking time. It is the dream state in dream time. And in fact, there is no time at all. It is in no time. I had said that the investigation, the analysis of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep is the diamond, the jewel in the Vedanta methodology. But it is also the most, the most challenging. It is the subtlest and yet the most profound method that we can find in the Upanishads. Let me elaborate on this a little more and share it with you. Three, four secrets. They are the secret voids of the three states. You will not find them in any book. And you will not find many Vedantic teachers who share these secrets with you. The first point to observe is that the first point of the three states, which is to be accepted benevolently, is that there are no three states. But the teaching is that there is only the one Self without a second. In fact, it is not an examination of the states, it is an examination of the three states, who perceives the three states. It points to the fact that there is only this one Self. One Self exists, to which the states appear and disappear. In Vedanta, we must always keep in mind that that which appears and disappears, that which is object to us, that which has a beginning, that which has an end, cannot be real. And that which does not appear as an object, that which does not come, that which does not go, that which does not first, does not end, that is real. The first thing that must be thoroughly understood is that the purpose of investigating the three states is that there is only one Atman, one Self, and that is Reality. The second secret of this teaching is that everyone thinks, here there is this real world. I was born, by my parents, and I have these three states, I have these three states, sometimes I am awake, am aware of the world, and I have these three states, I have these three states, sometimes I am awake, am aware of the world, when I lie in my bed, have a dream, is the world still always there, when I am in deep sleep, I am not aware of anything at all, the world is still there, if someone records it on video while I sleep, when I am awake, I can show me the video, and they can thus prove to me that while I was sleeping deeply, the world was still there. So, everyone thinks, waking, dream and deep sleep, the states are in the world. Everyone thinks, waking, dream and deep sleep, all those states are in the world. But the Vedantic teaching of the three states is to show, that the states are not in the world, but the Vedantic teaching of the three states is to empty or to show that the states are not in the world. But the world is in the state. The waking world comes with the waking state. There is no waking world beside my waking state. I never experienced my waking world independent of my waking state. To think that the waking world exists independent of my waking state is to make an abstraction that can never be proved. The way to meet the wake of the waking world is to make an abstraction that can never be verified in experience. Everyone knows or believes that the dream world came with my dream state. When the dream appeared, the whole dream world appeared with it. When I wake up and the dream is over, nobody thinks that the dream world is still existing somewhere, even though the dream ended. But we all believe that my waking world has an independent existence apart from my waking state. Even though the fact of experience is, as soon as the dream appears, the waking is sublated, in the same way that when the waking appears, the dream is sublated, in the same way that when the waking appears, the dream is no longer there. They mutually sublate each other, they are not even in time, because there is no time outside of the states in which first there is the waking state and then there is the dream state. Waking time appears with the waking state, dream time appears with the dream state and there is no time outside of these two states where we can say first there was waking and then there was dream. So, the second, could anyone appreciate anything I am talking about now? No, no. For me, when I have a very good dream, it isn't finished when I wake up. I work with it, I think about it, so it's not finished, because you remember it, you can remember it and think about what it might mean and all of that. But when you're in the dream, at that time, you're taking it as real. So, of course, that's how we get Freudian psychology, he analyzed dreams and what they mean to us and all of this. And it's all valid, as soon as you wake up, if you look at the dream from when you wake up, I had a dream, I had a dream, but what I'm trying to say is, if you can give up the waking perspective, when you're in the dream, this vanadavi is gone, there's a dream vanadavi, and she's feeling that this is really real, this wave is going to get me and I'm going to drown and whatever. I'm flying on a carpet and it violates all the laws of waking. It seems, when you look at it from the waking, and not only that, in one night, I can have ten dreams. It is just so that I have ten dreams in one night and of course it is then so, I had a dream, I vanadivi had this dream, but that is not this vanadivi who is in the waking state, in the dream state the vanadivi of the waking state is gone and in the dream state this vanadivi can negate all natural laws of the waking world. There she can fly on the carpet and she still has fear that she will sink. But that is the vanadivi of the dream state. Let me make the first sign and then I will ask questions and questions and then I will continue. The second sign is that the world is in the city, the cities are not in the world. The second secret is that the world is in the state or in the states and not the states in the world. It is very written, it is called the Asadharana Dharma. Asadharana, Asadharana, Asadharana, Dharma, Asadharana, Dharma, means unique. Dharma, i.e., the teaching. All philosophers, empirical, Buddhist, Jains, Christian, all philosophers are in the waking state. They take that which is to be. All worldviews, all philosophical schools, all imperial ones look out from the waking state. Even the idealists, who assume that everything is simply a creation of our mind. They think it is the waking mind. Only Vedanta says that the waking mind is stuck in the waking state. The dream mind is in the dream state. That is the waking mind. The dream mind is stuck in the dream state. The dream is not an imagination of the waking mind. The dream is not a representation of the waking mind. Because during dream time there is no waking, the waking is completely radiated away by the dream, not there. And that is the waking, that is the waking mind. That is the experience. And so we must look at how it was in the time in which the real experience is, not from the waking state out. It is not from the waking state out. Everyone knows and everyone is familiar with the states, I was awake and now I had a dream, but these states according to Vedanta, this uniqueness is not known. That the states have no connection whatsoever with each other, neither in space nor in time, the only possibility for things to be connected is if they have a common time and go through a sequence, fir

O Sahnavabtu, Sahnavunatu, Sahaviriam Karvavahay, Jejasvinavadi Tamastu, Mavid Vashavahay, Bhojshanti Shanti Shanti. So, this will be our final class. All the effects are just Vacharambanam. Vacharambanam sind all diese Auswirkungen. You call it a pat, you call it a plate, you call it a Klee-Vas, but really they're just in truth, just clay alone. Sava-i-dham-brahma-eva, all of this is Brahman alone. Das ist die abschließende Lehre. So the same method is being used with cause and effect. But of all the methods that we find, that use the same one methodology, von allen Methoden, die wir finden, deren liegt also die Einung, dieselbe Methodik zugrunde, die wird benutzt. Drei, vier Geheimnisse. So, everyone thinks, waking, dream and deep sleep, the states are in the world. But the Vedantic teaching of the three states is to show, that the states are not in the world, aber die Vedantische Lehre der drei Zustände ist zu leeren oder zu zeigen, dass die Zustände nicht in der Welt sind. But the world is in the state. Aber die Welt im Zustand ist. The waking world comes with the waking state. Es gibt keine wache Welt neben meinem Wachzustand. But we all believe that my waking world has an independent existence apart from my waking state . Even though the fact of experience is, as soon as the dream appears, the waking is sublated, in the same way that when the waking appears, the dream is sublated, in the same way that when the waking appears, the dream is no longer there. They mutually sublate each other, they are not even in time, because there is no time outside of the states in which first there is the waking state und then there is the dream state. Asadharana, Asadhar
