Refuge and meditation are not passive states but active, urgent practices of letting go and humility that free the mind from the illusion of the ego and the fear of death.
Meditation is the habituation of the mind no longer clinging to the world of appearance. We habituate ourselves to doing the opposite of what we have been doing since beginningless time.
The text explains the meaning of refuge in Tibetan Buddhism as an inner state of alarm that arises from the fear of death and the impermanence of life. The speaker defines meditation not as mere habituation but as the active weaning of the mind from attachment to objects and the grasping at possessions. He emphasizes the human nature of the Buddha, who functions as teacher and role model, in order to overcome the distance between the enlightened one and the practitioner. Through the example of a personal encounter and the practice of apology, it is shown how letting go of ego and pride can be lived out in everyday life. The practice of generosity is presented as a central step toward spiritual liberation, in order to counter the human tendency to collect and hold on. The text connects these inner attitudes with the lineage tradition of the 16th Karmapa and the Mahamudra practice. It is called for that the teachings be understood not as abstract theory but as an urgent necessity for one's own survival and liberation.

Good morning. The topics we have been discussing here this weekend, we will also put these things on the internet via Sport-Hippfeil, so that people who are listening to this at home can access them. The content we have here can also be practiced if one is not specifically doing the new Janas, because this is, so to speak, general Buddhist knowledge, which is what we always do with the new Janas. It points to the specific, but we have already arrived at that. I intend to dedicate one week each year starting next year, during which one will truly be required to participate in the teachings and practice for a full week, so that we truly carry this through and take it so much to heart that we become established. Established means that we no longer intentionally create problems for ourselves and others. We begin this morning with the German Chang Prayer, so that we always know that we are here in the institution of the 16th Karmapa. This is the Karmakar-Tschül tradition, the Karmakar-Tschül lineage. It goes back to German Chang-Tilupanau-Pamapa and so on. This is the link in the chain of liberation within the Karmakar-Tschül tradition. This German Chang Prayer, the special thing about it is that it contains all the Mithalson instructions, namely the indication of the ultimate nature of mind, of the ultimate view that we cultivate thereby by taming our mind. So, let us begin. I invite the great German Chang-Tilupanau-Pamapa, Mila to the Karmapa-Pam Master, Gam-Popa, Soudis to Jampa, the oldest Karmapa, the holders of the four great and eight small lineages. So the beat count and the glorious Druck pair and so on, the glorious protectors, the essential apology, the Dachburg-Kar-Tschepas, the profound path of Mahamudra-Meister-Tan. Give your blessing that I may heal the lineage of the Kar-Tschilamas through your inspiring example. It is said that renunciation of Sam-Sara is the foot of the Military-Zon. Forgive the meditating of the freedom from attachment, grasping, and possession, which cuts the fetters to this life. Blessing that he is without attachment to wealth and honor. It is said that devotion is the head of meditation. Please give your blessing to the meditating who always prays to the Lama, who opens for him the door to the treasure chamber of oral instruction, so that natural devotion arises in him, in him. It is said that our Streutheit is the true meditation, the body of meditation. The essence of the thoughts that arise is always new. Please give your blessing that the meditating naturally becomes accustomed to this, that in meditation he is free from intellectualizing. It is said that the essence of thoughts is the state of truth. Thoughts are not, and yet they arise. Please give your blessing to the meditating in whom thoughts arise as unobstructed play, so that he unmistakably recognizes it in the Saren and the Warners, not to be separated from the Lama in all stages of life, to rejoice in the radiance of his teachings, to fully perfect the characteristics of the grounds and paths, may thereby the state of Germany be quickly attained. I had just said, let’s see, the rest is included. When we speak of meditation in Tibetan Buddhism, then we speak, we always have such a strange notion that it is, we should at least know what it means, is habituation. Meditation is habituation. And the human being is always meditating. He gets used to a new fashion, a new car. So our mind gets used to new things. And seen from that perspective, what do we do when we speak of meditation in Buddhism, then we habituate the mind to something. No, we dehabituate the mind. We deprive, we dehabituate the mind from being accustomed to chasing after every object. Meditation is the habituation that the mind no longer clings to the world of appearances. We habituate ourselves to the opposite of
to do what we have been doing since beginningless time. If we now take refuge here, the refuge, what it entails, and this should be clear to us, when it is said, until enlightenment I take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Noble Sangha, then I must be in a state of alarm. Refuge is a state of alarm. I am afraid of the lower realms of existence. I am afraid of death, because I do not know what comes after. This is also stated in the Buddha-Caryāvatāra, in the first chapter, I believe, the 14th verse, which says, for example, well, I am not going to die yet. This is a wrong basic attitude. Instead, one should always say, I do not know when I will die, so I must practice now. I do not know when I will die, so I must train now. I am surrounded by dangers. Our mind must be on alert. That is refuge, among other things. And then it says, for the sake of the welfare of all beings, attain Buddhahood, through the merits of my practice of generosity, ethics, patience, joyful effort, concentration, and wisdom. That is, in one text, generosity and so on are written. Generosity stands first. What is our problem as human beings? Clinging, accumulating, wanting to have. That is why the first act, in order to attain mental liberation, is letting go. I was clinging, let go. It was part of doing what we normally do. And also internally, to keep saying, I must pay attention. Florian mentioned earlier, he had been at the traffic office and had some kind of tense situation with a woman, I think, at the reception. And there was some kind of bad mood, and then he went past her again. And then he immediately, so to speak, apologized, sorry, it was a misunderstanding. And then the woman was happy, she was happy that he had apologized. That he had seen, he had created that mood. To apologize means to confess and repent. We behave with sorrow and we do not want to be sorrowful anymore. Refuge is always a state of alarm. The tone could have come in right away, as this curve had started terribly. At the beginning, I thought, oh my god, now Brigitte and I have to be careful. We had no one. If we now fall dead, what do we do then? And then I quickly realized that that is the gagga, what is happening there. And then, Brigitte still had red alert, she then told the guests, yes, be careful with Mr. Brum, he is not keeping his distance. And of course I did not keep my distance. I did not take it so seriously. And the people who came did not take it so seriously themselves. What do I want to say? At the very beginning, there was indeed fear because of the Karmathen-Jalini, that it has no future. For me internally, I have been on the run the whole time, since 1983, I am always on the run. Richard Gimbel on the run. I am always on the run. I take refuge in the objects that offer me lasting protection. What is lasting protection? It is not the illusory appearance of the Buddha’s teaching, but wisdom. Is wisdom attained in one’s own mind? Then that is the absolute protection. If wisdom has been properly attained, the entire teaching of the Buddha can be manifested from that wisdom. If now a Buddha awakens, he does not begin to teach anew himself, but always refers to the Buddha of our age. Therefore, we always take refuge in the Buddha of our age, in Buddha Shakyamuni. But we know that there have been Buddhas before Buddha Shakyamuni, and many will be able to follow. The Buddha is not a one-time appearance, he is not an avatar of Vishnu or of Brahma or Vishnu, but the indication that the Prinsidater was an avatar, an emanation of Vishnu. That was for the latter, the Buddha was a god. But the Buddha was a human. That
It is important that we acknowledge that he was a human being. We must see him properly as human. He shows us how to bake a cake. He shows us how to assemble a car. He shows us how to make a piece of furniture. Of course, this is now a metaphor. What I am aiming at is that when we walk into an apprenticeship in a carpentry workshop, there is the master there, who makes the masterful, wonderful furniture. Then there is a journeyman, who helps to make these masterful things. As an apprentice, you walk in, and then you learn to work with wood, so that perhaps you can eventually learn mastery. Because the master is human, you are also human. We must always keep this in mind. Even if the Buddha has acted beneficially in many, many, many lifetimes, so that in this life he has realized the Ultimate, the absolute, the Ultimate, the final attainment. But if the inner distance is so strong that we push the Buddha into the realm of gods, then we think that the Buddha saves us. And he does not do that. The Buddha can drink as much water as he wants. We will remain thirsty. The Buddha can be free from suffering, we still suffer. If one says that the Buddha is in the non-dual state, that he is one with us. If I, or if you, kick me in the shin with a shoe with steel toe caps, then I feel the pain. And then I suffer from it. And then there are always the people who jump from a relative perspective to the absolute one. That is all illusion. That is only, as I always say, brain fog. It has no substance. The substance we need is that when we read this and that we truly take refuge, that we take it seriously, that we finally stop all our egoistic concepts, that we say, no, I no longer want to cling to my self-importance, to my, ah, I am so important, I am something special. I am something different from others. When I walk through the streets and there are trash cans, that is also a method for me, so that I do not walk around arrogantly. This, we so much want, I would very likely have many more followers if I would put on the guru act here. Then it would be very quick. Then a clique of guru devotees would form around the guru, and then the others, yes, you have to book. And then you have a hierarchy. Where there is a hierarchy, there is always the advantage that the teacher knows more than the student. That is the reason why the teacher sits higher than the student, not because it is a throne of power, but it is a method that knowledge is poured from one vessel into another vessel, into the vessel of the other. In the German Chang prayer, when we look at it, here it says, thus in meditation, free from attachment, Anatta and possession, one cuts the fetters to this life. That means, what we eat, also whatever we receive, that we are satisfied with the food we receive, with what we drink, that we are satisfied with that, that we have no attachment to our comfort, our recognition in this life. That we do not come into a state where the mind is constantly revolving around, yes, where am I? Well, I must also. And why always me? I have also so much. These are these dialogues. I know that these dialogues, I know it from myself earlier, and I know that the memories of this come up, yes, me and where am I? And I would also like to, or I have done so much. Or simply the example, the people who had problems with me, when I always said, yes, I understand that, because I have then done everything here. Why are the people so angry? I have no perspective. Yes, why me? And am I actually so bad that one must be so angry at me? Or is that, well, why can we that
not accept? A potter might have said, this is real theater, this is pure ego-theater. And each person should, for themselves, recognize that in their environment, wherever they are, when we are together here, then we should be in alertness. Refuge means achieving alertness in one’s own mind, to gain awareness of our inner chatter. Therefore, when I am in the Wednesday meditation, where I sometimes deliberately tell nonsense, to stir up people’s minds, and they think, well, you have told that, right? So that we can look at the thoughts, that the thoughts are nothing. The thoughts are only waves on the water, they are meaningless. The thoughts come, they go, they only have a meaning if we have a specific motivation, an orientation to do something. Now, since beginningless time, we have been drifting our mind around the whole time, causing harm to ourselves and others. Why? Why? Why does it please? And then? Huh? Oh. And then it started, there is something. We see something opposite, there is the separation there. Is the separation there? Then it is not only happening to me, but also to others, and then, who are you? Who are you all? Well, I, then in each one comes, I want, I want, I want. And already the beings are constantly busy breaking each other’s noses. And that is, when we examine, what are the mental poisons? It is so important to see the mental poisons in one’s own mind. Also truly to understand, all problems, no matter where in the world they exist, they arise only in beings in craving, aversion, and ignorance, but more ignorance and stupidity therein, they are entangled. And initially we always run, always, always, always further into it. There are times, then there are times when we are in a better mood, then there are times again when we are in a worse mood. Someone says, well, how can it be, how can it be that, for example, one is reborn from the animal realm back into the human realm? Well, that is why the internet is great now. If you look at the many YouTube videos from recent years, where people show how animals help other animals, not AI, that is still before the AI era. Animals help other animals, which are not even of their own species. There is such a situation, a duck, there is a pond and there are goldfish in it and the duck has food there and the duck takes the food and puts it into the pond and feeds the goldfish with it. These are actions that cause animals to accumulate merit and thereby be reborn as humans. They also accumulate merit by being slaughtered over and over again. If you have gotten used to being a dog, then you have the habit of being a dog, then you die and then you are born again as a dog and then you always peck. You have gotten used to it. And if your body is always eaten by humans, if they take you along and then do not properly butcher you at home, then there is some kind of intestinal disorder underneath. If you then feed on it in the street, then a strong connection has been formed between the animal and the teacher. Then this animal will be reborn as a human much faster. What do you think, why do we have overpopulation? The eight billion. Mass animal farming, mass animal farming. Therefore, these are the conditions. The beings, the animals, who always give their body again and again, they are for a very long time, they are cow and nomad cow, nomad cow, nomad cow and at some point there is so much merit that they are reborn as humans, just the same with pigs. And at the same time, the vast majority of all humans, we are reborn in lower realms of existence. As animals, as hungry ghosts, and hell beings. That is the course of things, because people get entangled in their disturbing emotions. It is simply logical. We must think logically. It does not work in Buddhism like that... Studying Buddhism
is not a university degree. One does not study there as one does at a university. It is not about memorizing doctrines and saying, yes, this is the doctrine of that one and that is the doctrine of that one. Rather, what is it that the doctrine is? What effect does it have on our existence? What happens there? Then it is said that we have the blessing here, that there is no attachment to status and honor. If I look back to the 1980s, how many people had such the idea of becoming Buddhist missionaries, so Dharma teachers, and then living from Dana. You know, you are constantly honored, and then you receive Dana. And I remind you of my story, when there were five, six people who formerly belonged to the community here, they asked me. The first thing was that a Lama, who was announced for a weekend, and then this course had to be canceled. I no longer know exactly what it was. There was a reason that the Lama could not come. But the people were there, and then I sat, well, I could explain to you simple basics, if you are interested, if you have come now, simply explain the basics. And then I explained, quite schematically, properly like one after another into the Takato, zack, zack, zack, zack, all the basic Buddhist things. And then the feedback came, oh, that is so great. So simple, I have never experienced that before. I did not fall asleep at all. Then, yes, I admit, that flattered my ego. And then they asked me, yes, could you be a Dharma teacher for us? Then I said yes, and then with the condition that they also go to other teachers. And then we had breakfast here. Then I got up from the breakfast, then I put away my dishes. And that was already not so good for my Guru career. And what for me, I must admit. Then they had more like 250 grams, I still drank a lot of espresso, pack of espresso, red tea, espresso coffee, tablet chocolate from goat milk and from sheep milk chocolate, because that is like whole milk and I can knock it down. Then I have no humps and scratches. Oh, no? Or then an envelope with 10 or 20 euros inside. I admit, of course that pleased my ego. I do not deny that. But after two years, then one of the people started to do a study, a step-by-step study, she had asked me beforehand, the noise. And well, then, you know, so two, three years and so. And then the people were at an event, from the Dalai Lama, in Hamburg, and there was then the Tibetan Center in Hamburg. And then they arrived at a stand and there the study at the Tibetan Center Hamburg and the seven-year study was offered to her. And she said then, yes, they are considering participating in it. I say quite honestly, that brings you nothing, that study. You will have information, but it will not make Dharma practice, it will not make your life easier. Because she had asked me. I was a theoretical teacher for them and my agreement was not to do that. Well, then she did it anyway. And I do not know if it was already the first half year. Then I gave teachings and then I always received corrections from the off. Yes, that means so and so. Yes, one did not have to do it so and so. And at the beginning the people listened and later I was, during the teachings, I was then corrected, so my teachings were corrected. And I was not a good Guru. I did not meet the expectations of the people. And that is what we should always make clear to ourselves. It is not about Guru or not Guru. It is not about student or non-student. The only purpose of the teaching of the Buddha is to uproot suffering from our mind. And for that we actually need an egoistic perspective. That we really no longer want to suffer. What happens with us in the West, we care
It is not about this egoistic perspective, but we care about the happiness of the whole world. And that is a German nature, to let the world enjoy. We have this not only in environmental policy, we have it also a lot in the Buddhist movement, where the German Buddhists, perhaps also in France, I know it, I know it, definitely from Germany, one wants to become an instructor, one wants to teach Dharma and then feels oneself as something special. And then one does not examine the words, what the words mean, but one repeats them, just as one has heard them. One follows the Lamas and Rumpetschels, also as it exists in the Allsen. Ah, the Mantramöle, it makes no difference, that is no problem for me. Yes, that is good. That, when we sit here again and again on weekends, why do I always come back to the beginning? Because my experience is that with you, the refuge is always lost again. You easily lose yourselves in the actions of the things you do and you forget that behind each of this doing, only the purpose is to be free from suffering and the cause is to become suffering. There is nothing to achieve in the teaching of the Buddha, to achieve, to stop. If it says, we try not to achieve, not to suffer, we let go of what leads to suffering. Simply just drop, let fall. How can we let fall? That is, when we walk around, we see somewhere animals, we think of that, we see such a bee in summer on the stage, nor

So, dann lass uns anfangen. Also unser Geist gewöhnt sich an neue Dinge. An erster Stelle steht Freigibigkeit. Was will ich damit sagen? Warum? Warum? Warum freut? Und dann? Hä? Oh. Was passiert da?
