True compassion (Karuna) is an active attitude, sustained by love (Metta), that alleviates the suffering of others without falling into self-centeredness or being overwhelmed, and that expands from individual experience to universal radiance.
Karuna is the response, filled with Metta, to a human being, to a being, who is suffering. So a response filled with Metta to suffering is a strong one and also an active doing, an active wish to alleviate suffering.
The text introduces the Buddhist practice of Karuna-Bhavana (cultivation of compassion) and defines it as the active response, filled with Metta (loving-kindness), to the suffering of others. The speaker emphasizes that Metta forms the foundation for turning toward suffering safely and without being overwhelmed. He warns against two distortions: sentimental, self-centered pity and the tendency to withdraw due to being overwhelmed. The guided meditation begins with establishing Metta and then expands it into Karuna by turning toward a suffering person and ultimately all beings. Concrete images such as a helping hand or the light of Amitabha serve as anchors for the emotional engagement. The text concludes with a poem by Sangharakshita, which describes boundless love as the only path to inner and outer peace. The practice is described as a path that leads from individual experience to universal radiance.

So you can, so to speak, first sit down in front of her in the meditation posture for a few moments, sitting quite comfortably, because I am not sure whether everyone even knows what Karuna is or how one sees Kona. That is why I wanted to say at least two, three sentences beforehand. Karuna is one of the Brahmaas, that is the divine abodes. The first one we all know, that is Metta. We do that very frequently, the Metta bharana. The second is Mudita with joy. The third is Karuna with feeling. The fourth would be Upeka, equanimity. The foundation of all Brahmaas, in my view, is always Metta. That is why we will also spend relatively a lot of time in the meditation on it, first so to speak establishing ourselves in Metta and then moving on. And there is, as I find, a very nice short and crisp definition of Karuna, namely Karuna is the response filled with Metta to a person, to a being, who suffers or who suffers. So the response filled with Metta to suffering is a strong and also an active doing, it is an active wish to alleviate suffering. That is very important. Two more things. You probably know this if you have already heard about it. There is always a near enemy and a far enemy of these individual abodes. The far enemy of compassion is indifference, cruelty, I believe is relatively clear. The near enemy, that one is usually a bit more interesting and why one does not really get to the bottom of it and sometimes might mistake it for genuine compassion. The one is that we tend to a kind of sentimental and then also frequently self-centered pity, which actually has nothing to do with what we actually want. Because then no real turning toward suffering happens, but we are actually more concerned with ourselves when we often have a certain pity from above toward other people. The second is that when we turn toward suffering, we frequently feel overwhelmed. So rather a kind of panic, withdrawing ourselves because of it and perhaps also feeling helplessness. So we also do not want that ideally. One could do a seminar on this for weeks, but that should be enough for simply. As I said, I will guide you through it. At the end there is a closing round, in between not. And let's see how we fit in the time. Be careful not to jump up directly after the last gong. Perhaps there will be a poem at the end. Okay. The Karuna Bavana and let us first take time to tune into the meditation in a very classic way, by checking your sitting posture or trying to get into a sitting posture that enables you both stability and grounding. Where you can give weight into the ground. A feeling of really firm rootedness. But at the same time you want to be awake and present. A stable, grounded sitting posture. It supports your mind to become stable, calm. And in the direction of lightness it supports the mind to stay with the object of meditation. And also feel how your breath now and here flows into and out of your body. And also feel the aliveness in your body. Heartbeat, pulse. And also turn to your emotional state. How do you feel right now? There is somehow a mental state. Perhaps your mind has already come to rest through the sitting, through your breathing. And perhaps there is a wish or a longing that you intend with this meditation. And see whether you are not only thinking of yourself, but that there is also an altruistic character in it. Perhaps the well-being of the people here in the room or the well-being of all beings. And the time with it. And is there perhaps somewhere a pleasant experience? Pleasant bodily sensation? A pleasant sensation when breathing. Warmth. A
A pleasant breeze in this room. Or simply a feeling of well-being here, being together with other people to meditate. Or a stirring of friendliness in you, gratitude, a little less tension in the skin of your face. A slight inner or outer smile. What opens your heart? With what do you come into connection with Metta? Be creative. You can also use your own images, symbols, memories to come into contact with Metta. To awaken Metta in you. M. And then let the trigger, the image, the memory. Let them recede somewhat into the background, but stay with the feeling of Metta. Let yourself settle into Metta. Oh, so that you come into direct experience, into direct feeling, perceiving of Metta. Less into thinking. Yes, perhaps there is a very strong feeling of Metta. Perhaps very subtle and weak. That is okay. That is okay. As it is. Metta is by nature expansive, wants to spread, to radiate. Like warm air that rises, like light that spreads in all directions, or like love that is boundless. Allow your Metta to radiate beyond the limitation of your own being. Out in all directions. Here too you can use your own image. Radiating like waves on a lake, that become bigger and bigger outward, or pulsing from inside to outside, from outside to inside, from inside to outside. So. And try to maintain a basis of Metta, to feel it, when you now turn towards suffering. On the basis of Metta we will turn to Karuna, compassion. The heart's wish that no one in this world may suffer. All beings suffer in one way or another. That is pain, illness. That being separated from loved ones, fear, helplessness, despair. Feelings of loneliness, not being seen. Yes, we all know the feeling of suffering. Turn towards a person you know. And of whom you know that he or she or it is suffering at the moment. So we approach closer, but we do not make the pain our own. Come. Turn towards this person in their suffering. Turn towards them. Show that you perceive their suffering, that they are seen in their pain. Let yourself be touched by it, without losing contact with Metta. Make. That the concrete memory, the concrete image recede into the background again. [Music] In this feeling of Karuna, compassion. And to stay in contact with Karuna, you can also use images, symbols, gestures. Perhaps it is a gesture of a helping outstretched hand. Or the image of a comforting embrace. Always with one foot already in the world, to spontaneously help from compassion, to alleviate suffering. Fearlessly knowing what to do. In the face of suffering. Oh. The image of Amitabha. Boundless love, boundless light, infinite light. May you be free from the causes of suffering? May your suffering be alleviated. Yes. May you feel seen and accepted? And continue for a while in Karuna, in compassion. And when you are ready, then let it radiate out in all directions. Yes. Yes, let go of limitation. Let it become ever wider, radiating into the infinite boundless space. M. And then so very gradually, very gently, very subtly, to come back again to the sensations of your body and your breath. Let go of all effort. Relax into your body. There is nothing more to do now. One more moment. Remain sitting with closed eyes. Completely relaxed. There is a poem by Sangharakshita. Yes, I will read it in the original, then possibly the translation in German as well, but it is quite easy to understand. The only way, one need and one need only. All earthly things above. This world have now as ever the need of boundless love. One way and one way only there is to outward peace that great heart of compassion which bits all sorrows seas. One need and only one need above all earthly things has this world now as ever the need for boundless love. One way and
there is only one way to outer peace. a great heart of compassion, which commands all sorrows to rest. [Music]

Herzschlag, Bulschlag. Was öffnet dein Herz? Womit kommst du in Verbindung mit Meter? Sei kreativ. Lass dich in Metter nieder. Oh. Das Bild von Amitaba. Grenzenlose Liebe, grenzenloses Licht, unendliches Licht. Entspanne in deinen Körper. The only way, one need and one need only. All earthly things above. This world have now as ever the need of boundless love. One way and one way only there is to outward peace that great heart of compassion which bits all sorrows seas.
