The Bertha von Suttner Study Foundation aims to ensure through targeted support that humanist students receive the same financial and ideological support opportunities as students with a religious orientation.

With its help, humanist students are to receive the same chances of support as their religious fellow students.

The text announces the fifth call for applications for the Bertha von Suttner Scholarship for the year 2026. Students and doctoral candidates can apply via the website of the humanist study foundation by 31 July 2026. The prerequisites are very good academic performance, identification with a humanist worldview, and an interest in the critical engagement with existential questions. The scholarship offers a monthly grant of 300 euros for a standard funding period of two years. The text emphasises that, unlike religious funding foundations, the study foundation does not yet receive state funding. The goal is to enable humanist students to have equal chances of support. Selection is carried out by a commission, followed by an online interview, with the scholarship recipients to be determined by the end of September. The study foundation was founded in 2021 by humanist organisations and is supported by an advisory board.

The now fifth call for applications of the Humanistic Study Foundation has begun. From now on, students and doctoral candidates can once again apply for a Bertha von Suttner scholarship via the foundation's website. Those who successfully complete the selection process will receive moral and financial support. After a pause last year, it is finally time again: By 31 July 2026 at the latest, committed young people can upload their documents on the website of the Bertha von Suttner Study Foundation. They should have achieved very good performance in school, in their studies, or in the extracurricular or non-university sphere; they should identify with a humanistic worldview and commit themselves accordingly; and they should have a pronounced interest in the critical engagement with great questions of human existence and in interdisciplinary discourses. Students from all fields of study are welcome, beginners as well as doctoral candidates. Since the Bertha von Suttner Study Foundation, unlike the religiously oriented support foundations, does not yet receive state funding, the scholarship holders can currently only be supported with a grant of 300 euros per month. The standard funding period is two years. The application is straightforward and is explained on the foundation's call for applications page. From 1 August, the foundation's selection committee will review the applications received. Those who overcome this first round of the selection process will receive an invitation to an online interview. By the end of September at the latest, the new Suttner scholarship holders will be determined, so that the funding can be paid out on time at the beginning of the winter semester 2026/27. The last call for the Suttner Scholarship in 2024 was very successful: Around 250 students and doctoral candidates submitted their documents. The 10 best candidates have been supported since October 2024. Among them are first-year students, advanced students, and doctoral candidates from a wide variety of fields such as aerospace engineering and philosophy. Most of them are enrolled at German universities, but some are currently also expanding their knowledge at foreign universities. The interests of the scholarship holders are broad, but they all share a clear orientation toward humanistic values and a scientific worldview. The Bertha von Suttner Study Foundation (BvS) was founded in 2021 by the Humanist Association of Germany (HVD), the Giordano Bruno Foundation (gbs), the Humanistic Academy Germany (HAD), and the Federal Working Group of Humanistic Students (BAG). With its help, humanistic students are to receive the same opportunities for support as their religious fellow students. The BvS is supported by a highly regarded advisory board and by numerous public figures, including many academics.
