The true value of human action is determined not by its outward form but by the sincere, God-oriented intention that commits one to ethical and just conduct in everyday life.

Intention is like the Qibla (direction of prayer) of the heart; it is the inner orientation. Intention means to perform an act consciously; knowing what one is doing and why one is doing it.

The text is a Friday sermon of the DITIB, delivered on the occasion of the New Year 2025/2026. It calls on the faithful to examine their intentions (Niyya) and to consciously direct their deeds toward Allah. The central theological foundation is the Hadith that deeds are judged by intentions. The text connects this inner orientation with concrete ethical demands such as justice, mercy, and honesty in everyday life. A retrospective on the past year and a prospective look at the coming year are offered, with the year 2026 presented as an opportunity for renewal. The sermon emphasizes the significance of the month of Rajab for spiritual preparation. It calls on the congregation to lead a responsible and humble life and to promote what is good.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book in truth, so worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Actions are but by intentions, and every person shall have only that which they intended..." Actions are to be judged by intentions (02.01.2026) With all its highs and lows, the year 2025 is now behind us. We ask Allah to make the year 2026 even more blessed than the one that has passed. May He make it a year in which mercy grows, justice is realized, and peace prevails — especially in the regions where people suffer under oppression. Dear brothers and sisters! Esteemed believers! When we enter a new year, it is among the most important duties to pause, to examine our hearts, and to question our intentions. Our Prophet (s.a.s.) taught us that actions derive their worth from intentions, and that each person shall receive only what they intended.[1] The intention is like the Qibla (direction of prayer) of the heart; it is the inner orientation. Intention means to perform an act consciously; knowing what one is doing and why one is doing it. In this sense, intention is less about "what" we do, and more about "why" we do it. A small act can become something great through a sincere intention, while an apparently great act can lose its worth through a false intention. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.s.) reported that Allah speaks to the angels who are entrusted with recording the deeds of people: "If My servant intends a good deed but does not carry it out, I shall write for him one good deed. If he carries it out, I shall write for him ten to seven hundred times its reward. If My servant intends a bad deed and refrains from it, I shall not record it as a sin against him. But if he commits it, I shall record for him a single sin."[2] Esteemed believers! The one whose two days are alike is at a loss. Man is not created to stand still. We are called to shape this world both materially and spiritually. Therefore, we should recognize the value of our time and use it consciously. Dear brothers and sisters! At the beginning of the year 2026, we should not concern ourselves only with worldly plans for the future. We should also look back on our past life and ask ourselves how we have used the time that Allah has granted us. For on the Day of Reckoning we shall not be asked "how long" we lived, but "how" we lived our lives.[3] Dear brothers and sisters! Let us also seize the blessed month of Rajab, in which we find ourselves, as an opportunity to renew our intentions. Let us resolve to serve Allah sincerely and with full devotion.[4] Let us resolve to do everything we do for the pleasure of Allah. Let us resolve not to harm anyone and not to break any hearts. Let us resolve to be honest in word and deed, to uphold justice and act fairly. Let us resolve to respect the elderly and to meet the young with mercy. Let us resolve to be sensitive to the rights of others, to be forgiving, and not to constantly bring up mistakes. Let us resolve to remain patient and not to give up in difficult times. Let us resolve to lead a modest life without boasting, to be grateful for what we have, and to earn our livelihood in a permissible manner. Let us resolve to enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil. Let us resolve to lead a responsible and mindful life. Esteemed congregation! May our intentions be good, may our ending and our outcome be good. May the month of Rajab bring us blessings. May our Friday be blessed! _________________________________________ The DİTİB Sermon Commission [1] Bukhari, Badu'l-Wahiyy, 1; Muslim, Imara, 155. [2] Muslim, Iman, 204. [2] Muslim, Iman, 204.
