Jesus enters right into the Easter Monday blues and the torn, questioning life of people and gives peace and the certainty of his reality through encounter, shared meals, and the explanation of Scripture.

The blues is real, but so is Jesus. And he comes right in the middle of it.

The sermon takes Easter Monday as the emotional conclusion of the Easter days and compares the feeling of the disciples after the Resurrection with today's 'Easter Monday blues'. Jesus enters right into this uncertainty and greets with 'Peace be with you'. The sermon emphasizes that even Jesus' closest friends doubted and were frightened, which is meant to console the listener in their own unbelief. Through being touched, shared meals, and the explanation of Scripture, the reality of the Resurrection becomes tangible. The sermon connects this with concrete everyday examples such as meeting a friend and church coffee. It closes with the promise that Jesus will also enter into the torn, questioning life of the listeners and give them peace.

(The reading text Luke 24:36-45 will be read during the sermon – I recommend a second reader) Easter Monday Blues with Emotional Chaos Is there such a thing as Easter Monday blues? Three or even four intense days lie behind us – with all the emotional states that life and death can bring. Some with lots of music and great worship services, others with Easter fires and silence, a third group with lots of family, Easter egg hunts and a full house, a fourth group perhaps lonely or with lots of boredom – glad that the holy days are finally over. How might it have been for the friends of Jesus? Emotional farewell with a shared meal, desperate and helpless, because they could do nothing after Jesus was taken away by the soldiers, full of horror when they saw him on the cross, unbearably sad, they could only stare blankly ahead. Then the incredible news from the female friends, who came back from the tomb beaming – Jesus is alive, they cry! – and just the two who have come back from Emmaus. Still quite out of breath they stammer that they had broken bread with Jesus. That is all too much at once. First get a clear head. Let it sink in. Come to rest. While they were still talking, suddenly the Lord stood in their midst. Jesus simply shows up. Right in the middle of the blues. While they are still talking. While they are still thinking. While they are just setting the table. While they are opening the window to let some air in. In the middle of everything they are just doing. Jesus right in the middle. While I am thinking whether I still have enough cake left for this afternoon. While I am wondering whether we need to load the car again when we are going to my mother-in-law. While my thoughts go to my daughter, who on the other side of the earth is struggling with the consequences of the scarce oil. While the news from yesterday's Tagesschau are going through my head. Jesus simply shows up. Right in the middle of my torn, questioning life. In my blues. In my shattered world, which I cannot sort out. When faith is questionable He said: "Peace be with you!" Peace be with you. The greeting of the Risen One. The greeting of the angels at the birth of Jesus. A greeting that has always been more needed than ever, because the world has always been anything but peaceful. When Jesus steps into my life, right in the middle: what does he say to me? What is his message to me? Perhaps: Don't worry about whether you are well enough prepared. It will be enough. Or: Don't be afraid for your daughter, I am looking after her. Or: Yes, I come into your torn life and I will put the many splinters and shards of your world back together. Peace be with you. Can I hear that? Do I want to hear that? They were all startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. Jesus said to them: "Why are you so frightened? And why do you doubt in your hearts?" The heart races, the chest tightens. They think they have the ghost of Jesus before them. Who would not be afraid? I am afraid of everything that is hostile to life: of hatred and violence, of the coldness that is spreading in our politics and of what we are doing to creation. Would I be afraid of the spirit of a beloved dead person? I don't think so. But I understand that the disciples do not trust their eyes. Because yes, it is not self-evident to believe in the risen Jesus. It comforts me that it is the same for his friends. That they had doubts and were uncertain. If even they, who had been with him all the time, doubt – then it is also normal that I do. Who comes into contact with God is initially frightened. The Bible is full of such stories. Moses has to take off his shoes at the burning bush and cover his face on Horeb, because the encounter with God is barely bearable. The shepherds in the field are frightened by the light of the angels. The disciples on the lake are frightened when they realize that Jesus can calm the storm. But I don't want to be afraid of God, and certainly not of Jesus. I don't want to doubt whether he really has risen either. For I long for that firm, unshakable faith that always reckons with God. Right now. But the world makes it difficult for me. Or is it God himself who makes it difficult for me? After all, there is much more against him than for him. But Jesus contradicts: It is I myself: Look at my hands and my feet. Touch me and see for yourselves – for a ghost has no flesh or bones, as you can see I have. While he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. With hand and foot and fish Sometimes I only understand when I can touch something. Touch me, says Jesus. Com-prehend me. With hand and foot. With the wounds, with the traces of my life and my dying. With everything that belongs to me. Touch the skin. Touch the little hairs on the back of the hand. Feel the warmth. I am no ghost. I am real and I am alive. When I meet my friend again after a long time, I first take her in my arms. We hold on to each other for a long time, as if we need to make sure that we really are together. Because it is not a matter of course. We almost lost each other – because she was very ill and because I moved to another city. Often we hear nothing from each other for months. And then we meet again, hold each other in our arms and it is like before again. I also sometimes lose sight of God. And perhaps he loses sight of me too? But there is Jesus. God's child. A human being like me with skin and hair, hand and foot, with scars and wounds, tears in the eyes, love in the heart. He lets himself be touched and touches. And I read the stories about him and with him and it becomes warm in my heart again and I know: this is all real. True human. True God. For all their joy they still could not believe it and were out of themselves with astonishment. Then he asked: "Have you anything to eat here?" They gave him a piece of grilled fish. He took it and ate it before their eyes. Touching is not enough. The decisive thing happens when you do something together. And above all, when you eat together. Jesus and food – that simply goes together. Ghosts don't eat. Angels don't either. But people like you and I eat – and preferably together. The Last Supper with the Passover lamb and the bread, which they eat. The loaves and the fishes, which they share with 5000 people. That all-changing meal with Zacchaeus, that instructive meal with Mary and Martha, the broken bread in the guesthouse in Emmaus. With Jesus at the table, fear recedes and it is about the simple things of life: the fish is grilled, it smells of thyme and honey, the bread is shared, the cup is filled, life is loved. I live and you should live too. When my friend and I get together, a spread is laid out. A good bread, butter, cheese, sometimes also a soup – nothing complicated. But delicious – and with a mixture of smells of parsley, olive oil and garlic. Along with it a bottle of good wine. And then we talk and tell each other and share what moves us and weighs on us. I tell her about the daughter at the other end of the world, she tells me about her neighborhood project. We talk about our families and what worries us health-wise. All of that comes onto the table and is shared. When we stay together here after the service at the church coffee, we also share what thoughts and hopes we have brought with us. Perhaps. But one thing holds true for my friend and me and for us as a community here: Jesus is present when we eat and drink and talk and laugh and cry and simply live. Open and understand and stay But then comes the farewell. Also with Jesus and his friends and female friends. The Lord said to them: "While I was still with you, I told you: It must all be fulfilled that is written about me – in the Law of Moses, among the Prophets and in the Psalms." Then he helped them to understand the Holy Scripture correctly. As we on Easter Monday, the friends and female friends look back and try to understand what has happened there. So much that was opened: the tomb and the eyes, the Scripture and now the mind. And only when the death and the resurrection of Jesus is seen together with what was experienced with Jesus before, does the whole thing make sense. Here God is to be seen, to be felt, to be experienced: The God of the Living, who is not to be found among the dead. The God who exalts the lowly, does not leave the humiliated alone, heals the sick and satisfies the hungry. The God who rebels against the power of death and in this world always takes the side of life – and thereby the side of all who stand up for a world worth living in – who stand up for the humiliated and the degraded, the grieving and the sick, the hungry and the thirsty. In everything that the disciples experienced with Jesus, they came to know this God. And even though Jesus now really has to go: this God remains. Is there such a thing as Easter Monday blues? When everything is over and everyday life moves in? When the Easter decorations are put away, even though they could still hang for a while? Today is a day to think again about all of that, what was and what is and what will be – and how all of that is connected with this God of the Living. Make yourself ready: Jesus also enters with you, even if you perhaps do not expect him at all. And then he sits down today at your table and shares with you your life, your grief, your hope, your longing for a better world. The blues are real, but Jesus is too. And he comes right in the middle. He comes to you and says "Peace be with you" and you feel that it is true. And you take this peace with you into the next 40 days just as the disciples did and together we think about what this resurrection is and how it continues after that. Easter Monday blues? Perhaps. But with the one who simply comes along. And through that everything becomes different. Amen. From the Preaching Workshop Four questions on sermon preparation to Christiane Quincke 1. What preaching situation do you have in mind? Easter Monday is often felt as a closing. Those celebrating the service come in different moods after 3-4 "holy days." With this thought I begin. 2. What inspired you in the sermon preparation? The sermon meditation by Anne Herzig in the Göttinger Predigtmeditationen inspired me greatly to parallelize the emotional world of the disciples and female disciples with our Easter Monday emotional world. This also includes the thought that the "unbelief" of the disciples also has something comforting about it. 3. Which discovery will continue to accompany you? The immediate entry of Jesus into the circle of the disciples is indeed a recurring motif, but it has become much more conscious to me this time (also thanks to the observations of Anne Herzig) - and it is exciting to spell out this thought. 4. What does this sermon owe to the final editing? My sermon coach helped me to formulate the still very vague and hesitant conclusion of the sermon in a more assertive and more promising way. Thank you for that! Pericope 06.04.2026 2025/2026 Series 2

Jesus kommt einfach so dazu. Mitten in allem, was sie gerade so tun. Jesus mittendrin. Jesus kommt einfach dazu. Mitten hinein in mein zerrissenes, fragendes Leben. In meinen Blues. Vielleicht: Mach dir keine Sorgen, ob du gut genug vorbereitet bist. Fasst mich an, sagt Jesus. Be-greift mich. 2. 4. Perikope 06.04.2026 2025/2026 Reihe 2
