Responsibility · main message Gratitude · carrying Knowledge · carrying

True gratitude towards divine gifts such as knowledge and power does not consist in verbal confessions, but in the ethical assumption of responsibility for the consequences of one's own actions.

The text analyses the Qur'anic narrative of King Sulaiman (Solomon) and the wisdom bestowed upon him, in particular the understanding of the language of animals. The speaker differentiates between various interpretations of 'knowledge' (jurisprudence, natural science, control of the jinn) and emphasises that true gratitude towards divine gifts lies in the assumption of responsibility. He criticises a purely formal or performed religiosity that remains without ethical substance. Using the example of the historical debate on the rationalisation of miracles (e.g. Gödel's incompleteness theorem vs. colonial rationality), he warns against the distortion of the text. Sulaiman serves as a model for the combination of knowledge and power, which demands ethical control. The text calls for examining the substance behind religious formulas and for assuming responsibility for the consequences of one's own actions.

So, let’s begin. So, today we come to a major story in the Quran. This is in Surah An-Naml. Surah An-Naml mentions the stories of many prophets. I have quoted from it before, and the episode that speaks of Sulayman and Bilqis and so on is relatively long. We will probably not manage to cover all of it in one sitting today. I have divided it into three parts. Perhaps we will manage to cover it in two viewings. It begins with this verse. And We had already granted wisdom to Dawud and Sulayman. And she said, “All praise belongs to Allah, who has favored us over many of His believing servants.” And this is already the umbrella under which, so to speak, the following story must be read a bit, namely under the umbrella of knowledge. Because with that we also understand many things better and do not understand them so mythically and not so legendarily. What is meant by knowledge here? We scholars distinguish or propose various types of knowledge. First, judgment; we also spoke about this last time, I believe, as we said that Sulayman corrected Dawud in a manner, in a procedure, of how one pronounces a judgment, how one arrives at a just judgment, namely that one must absolutely listen to both sides. And they were also kings and judges. Another proposal is, especially regarding Sulayman, that this is the knowledge mentioned here in the Quran, the language of animals, that Sulayman understood the language of animals. A third proposal is that it concerns the control of the jinn. And a fourth proposal is that it concerns what we would call natural sciences today, i.e., knowledge of natural sciences. Because we also spoke about this, regarding Daud, when we said that he was the one who initiated the Iron Age and who either invented the technology of iron smelting himself or, as a pioneer, spread and established it, and so to speak provided all the resources for it to be done. And with Sulayman, in Islam, it also concerns knowledge, namely architectural knowledge, civil engineering knowledge above all. This is now, so to speak, supplemented from the Bible, because Sulayman is often associated with having built many very advanced structures. An important aspect is how Sulayman and Dawud react to this knowledge that was given to them, whatever one now wants to assume from these things. But I believe that the Quran was so, so to speak, on all levels. So perhaps all four are meant, not just one of them. I mean, for us today it is of course clear, okay, some kind of scientific knowledge will certainly also have been granted. What is meant by the control of the jinn, we already discussed last time, that we said it can also be quasi-dangerous technologies. But if they are also real jinn, it is also no problem. And the language of animals and jurisprudence. However it may be, perhaps it is a mixture of all of this. And how do they react to it? With gratitude. And that is easier said than done, okay? Because what does gratitude even mean in this context? What does it mean to react with gratitude to a power that has been given to you? It means, if one has done something wrong, so one has power. If one has knowledge and technologies under one’s control, one has power, okay? If one has power and one does something wrong, what happens to the people who now have to deal with this debt in some way? Do you accept it and say, oh yes, I am sorry and I apologize and try to make amends again? Or do you first try to disavow and deny it and say, no, I did nothing wrong. And that It was for this reason and for that reason. And that was also carelessly rationalized and so on and so forth. And only when you are forced to, only then do you begin to make excuses. And so this reaction is part of gratitude, but also, so to speak, a truly grateful attitude overall means not only saying, oh thank you dear God, that you have given me, but taking responsibility for what Allah has given one. That is true gratitude, because everything else is merely lip service. To realize that Allah has given me, Allah has given me what He has not given to others. And with this, a share of responsibility is also transferred to me, that I do something with these things. I may enjoy it, but I must also fulfill my responsibility. And here, taking on this responsible responsibility, so to speak, encompasses the reaction, encompasses responsible action, and also, so to speak, a purpose. And here you see that, it is not so simple, no, it is not. Responsible action means acting according to values, which means one must first of all have values. One must have control. One must think long-term and sustainably, consider consequences, show consideration, and so on. But what do most people do? They react with arrogance rather than with gratitude. Or if they react with gratitude, then rather only with lip service gratitude, only with gratitude that is a show, that they are so humble, that they are so great, and now they say Alhamdulillah, but do none of these things, okay. And that is something we really need to learn as Muslims, to see through and also to reject. This staging of Tawakkul and the staging of religiosity must not dazzle us. It must actually be meaningless for us, and we must always look at the substance. Is there true Tawakkul behind this staging? Is there true gratitude behind this, or is it all just something with which someone wants to elevate themselves, with which someone wants to stage themselves, and with which someone wants to present themselves? And unfortunately, unfortunately, we will find that even among Muslims, it is often the case that we all say brother, sister, Hamd-ul-La'a, Insha'Allah, and so on and so forth, but these whole words have no substance behind them. And that is something that is unacceptable. A path for which the Quran, the Children of Israel, repeatedly rebukes, and thereby tells us, do not take this path. Do not take this path of formalism and staging. Let us go to the next verse, insha'Allah. And Sulayman inherited from Dawud and said, O people, the language of birds has been taught to us, and we were given from everything. This is truly the clear bounty. Okay, number one, what does knowledge even mean? I want to remind you of this again, okay? Because having knowledge is something that has to do with yourself. Knowledge is not something I simply consume, read, and then I have it, but knowledge is built and constructed within myself, by myself. For example, someone reads, sees the Quran, opens it, but cannot read Arabic. For him, those are signs. Because why, a'chek tʃuʿn, that has meaning, but I cannot decipher this meaning at all, but it is not arranged randomly. It is not some random pattern that I see there, but someone wants to tell me something, but I have no idea. If he can decipher these signs and read them, then he is at the level of data. He can read it, if he now also understands the language, the Sunday, and so on and so forth, then he is already at the level of information. But information alone is not yet knowledge. Information must now be put into relation be set, in relation to me, in relation to my beliefs, in relation to other things, in relation to other information, and so on and so forth. Only once I have done this work does it become knowledge, only then can I deal with it myself. Information is not yet knowledge. And here we see, so Sulayman is given knowledge, okay, that is number one. And now it is also important that Sulayman represents, represents which type of person, one who has knowledge and can act and has power. He is a model for a person, and that is not always the case. So many prophets have knowledge, but have no power. And Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, this verse only becomes relevant for him later. It was probably revealed in Mecca, and there the Prophet has no power. But later it becomes relevant for him, when he is then in Medina. And we have often heard of prophets who have no power of action, no power of shaping, who were made weak in their people, as the Quran says, and so on. And Sulayman and Daud both represent the one who combines knowledge and power, and how that must look, how such a person must look, who has both. And that is a high standard there. Okay, did I forget anything? Yes, exactly, perhaps just very briefly. What does the language of the birds mean here? What interpretations are there for that? Most interpreters say, of course, okay, Sulayman Ali Sallallam could truly understand what the birds combine. And that is a miracle, a miraculous gift, a proof of his prophethood. And that the birds also became part of his army and were used especially for reconnaissance and as spears and scouts, or also sometimes as messengers. And there is also an interpretation, but that is someone who simply collects all reports. And already back then, about Sulayman and Daud, many, many legends were in circulation. And some scholars simply collected these legends and said, hey, before all these legends and all these traditions and reports are lost, I will write them down here, but I tell you, this is only what is being told. But I am writing it down for you, so that you will not forget it for future generations. And there are, for example, then legends that whole flocks of birds also served as shade providers for this army of Sulayman, and so on. But as I said, these are, you must rather see it as, there the scholars collected what was already known about Sulayman. And that is naturally legend and that is naturally myth. A hundred years ago, when colonialism invaded the Muslim countries, with an over-rational attitude, okay, with an attitude, okay, only reason counts and one rejects the miraculous, and so on, and everything is explainable through mathematics. That is still a position that was very well known 80 years ago, that David Hilbert said, with the help of mathematics, we can know everything, we will know everything. So one had the hope, especially through mathematics, that humans will know everything, and Kurt Gödel then proved a few years later, no, mathematics can, has gaps, so to speak. It is an incompleteness theorem, if you have heard of it. That means, we cannot know everything, okay. And in that arrogant attitude back then, the mindset was, reason, the intellect will illuminate and enlighten everything, and there is nothing that is somehow miraculous or mysterious. And that also influenced Muslims, and some then, because of that, especially twisted the arm of the text, so to speak, and said, no, for example this Hood Hood, of whom is spoken later, that was not a bird, that is the name of an officer of the army of Sudeh-Man, and that is simply not true, because the Quran says, that was a Bird. One cannot simply say something else when the Quran clearly states that it is a bird, or to say, well, he did not understand the birds, it is only a symbol for the fact that he understood particularly much. But why should one do that? Why should he still say in the Quran, yes, we were taught to understand the birds, and so on and so forth. And these modernist reinterpretations, the scholars dealt with them very intensively 100 years ago and said, no, for one who believes in God, miracles are possible. If Allah wants Sulaiman to understand the birds, then it is possible. But it can also mean that he knew the behavior of the animals, that he knew, in the sense that we today know from behavioral research, that we can actually interpret the behavior of animals and also interpret the communication of animals. So that this happened, this, so to speak, well, where is it? Excuse me, that this happened. For us, we only see animals, we know that animals communicate with each other, for us these are signs, but nowadays they have partly become data for us and sometimes also information, because through science and through pattern recognition and so on, we sometimes know, okay, for example, we have deciphered the dance of the bee. The bee, when it returns and how it dances, we can now actually understand ourselves as humans what the bee is saying to the other bees. And there is also this interpretation that Sulaiman had such knowledge. Also possible, yes. But the mainstream says, it is simply a miracle, Sulaiman could understand birds and so on. Okay, let us continue. Something important that we can still learn from this and a lesson for us is, is the foundation for a good and just rule, as it is actually portrayed very long in the Quran by Hud and Sulaiman, what is it? Knowledge, okay. Okay. The foundation for a good and just rule without knowledge. But knowledge alone is not enough, one needs more, but without knowledge no good and just rule. And Sulaiman, peace be upon him, inherits not only the throne, not only the power, but he also inherits the knowledge. Okay, let's go on. And now we continue with the next verse. And Sulaiman assembled his soldiers from among the jinn, humans, and birds, and they were arranged in rows. When they then came to the valley of the ants, an ant said, O ants, enter your dwellings, so that Sulaiman and his soldiers do not crush you without them noticing. So, before that, let us briefly come to the communication with the ant, we know today that ants communicate through pheromones, but also through sounds they make with their legs and so on. How is it to be understood that Sulaiman could understand such a thing? Did he, so to speak, hear it? Or could he interpret the behavior of these ants through knowledge, observation, and so on? And from that, these were not only data for him, but they were information and knowledge for him. Both possible. Okay, of course in earlier times people thought, okay, the ant spoke and Sulaiman heard it. Nowadays we know, they of course do not speak like we do. Okay. But much more important is, the Quran picks up here something that people have always known and thought about Sulaiman, peace be upon him. For the people at that time in the Middle Ages, and Islam was, so to speak, revealed at the beginning of the Middle Ages, these are the transmitted stories, which are also true for them. And there was once Solomon and he had this and he had that and so on and so forth. And Solomon was not a prophet, but he was only a king according to the Bible. He was not a prophet. And he ruled simply by having spirit beings under his and by having mystical and legendary power, for which we are not responsible. And now the Quran comes and says, hey, that was not the case. Rather, why did Solomon have power? Because he had knowledge. And what did he do with this power? He even respected ants. Okay. And this is where we are coming to, because here much is described by scholars under the inspiration of these verses. And I want to partially touch upon this a bit. Okay. Number one, the ant, so what we see in this is again, what is a good leader? He is humble and grateful, because, what would any of us say if we notice, okay, I mean, the ant does not even have to speak yet, but we notice that ants flee from us. We say, yes, sorry ants, but we have to go through there now, and so on. He halts an entire army because of these ants and respects what he heard there. And he takes on, that is what I just said, here, from his knowledge and from his things, he rather takes on responsibility. Okay. And that is true gratitude. And that is also, of course, true humility and true modesty. Okay. But another thing is, what does the ant symbolically stand for? When we speak of ants, they are not just now, but for many, many millennia, a symbol. If I ask you, what does an ant symbolically stand for, all in all? Work, yes. And what else? Strength, exactly. And not only that, but these are not just one ant, but community. Exactly. Okay. So and for that it stands, that is nothing, so to speak, that we only have now through scientific investigations, but if one simply watches the ants for an hour, one also notices that. And ants stand for, I just simply looked up ant symbols on the internet and then this came up immediately. Okay. For diligence, industriousness, and so on, community, cohesion, and so on. That is what ants stand for. And whose, to whom is the symbol of the ant always held up again? To whom do we often say, or who sometimes says to themselves? Well. But if one strives for something good and one thinks one has not achieved any effect, then one often says, yes, but I am an ant in a whole team. So it may be that my, it may be that my contribution is small, but I am not the only one who makes this contribution, but many people make their contribution for the good, and thus, so to speak, the ant also stands for each power its part and each power contributes something small, but from that something great arises. And this now, perhaps still here, I find this interesting again, what does the ant stand for in spiritual circles? It is interesting only. And now let us think, okay, why does the Quran pick up a story with ants precisely here? For many reasons. Once to show, okay, the small ones have rights and it is okay to halt an entire army, of which we say, that is the most important thing at all, that is the greatest thing at all and we have priority over everything else, for small ants, and then also in the context of, one has to see a bit, in the context of Sura An-Naml, Sura An-Naml tells us, although I have not yet, Sura An-Naml tells us about a whole series of prophets, not only of Solomon and David, but also of less powerful prophets. And here is an interpretation, that it is said, Allah wants to say, Bani Israel, the Muslims of that time, did not reach the peak of their development within one or two generations, but that began with Ibrahim, peace be upon him, who constantly all the time was persecuted by every left-wing organization and was almost killed and had to flee here, then through Musa, peace be upon him, who was indeed victorious in the end, but not that he had power or something like that, through very, very many Ants, each of whom contributed their part, to Muslim generations that, over a very long period, did something, did good, and only on this groundwork, on this foundation built by many ants, could something like the Wood and Solomon come about, so to speak the pinnacle of development, the highest, the strongest kingdom one sees. Okay, that is also why the Quran gives this as an example to the Muslims in the time of Muhammad, saying, okay, be like ants. Even if you think, because in Mecca it was like this, you do and act, but then a block quickly comes and then they slandered here and then they do that and then your money is taken away and so on and so forth. And you do not see any effective activity from yourself and you do not see any changes and so on. And here the Quran says, no, no, you are changing something, but in very small steps and you are building a foundation. And as soon as this foundation has once been built, only then can the great thing come into existence and the great thing hold upon it. That is one thing. Then we have, as said, the small ones have rights and the small ones also have wisdom. So that is also part of it. That will come later. And namely here the Quran, the Vetsam Ardachikan, so he smiled, so Sulayman, amused by their words and said, my Lord, cause me to be grateful for Your grace which You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and to do righteous deeds with which You are pleased, and let me enter, through Your mercy, among Your righteous servants. And already al-Tabari, al-Tabari is a very well-known and significant scholar, because he is one of the scholars who simply really fixed in writing for the first time the history of the world at that time, which had only been transmitted orally. Only because of that do we know it at all. Otherwise all of that would already have been lost. And this is now, this phot

So, los geht's. Weil was bedeutet hier in dem Kontext überhaupt Dankbarkeit? Okay, Nummer eins, was bedeutet jetzt überhaupt Wissen? Okay. Kraft exakt.
