The church is called to be the pillar and foundation of truth, to preserve the Gospel as an unchanging foundation and to defend it against error, acting in this role as a loving family and not as a business model.
And undeniably, great is the mystery of godliness. God was revealed in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed, preached among the Gentiles, believed in the world, taken up in glory.
The preacher explains 1 Timothy 3:16 in the context of church leadership and the definition of the church as the house, pillar, and foundation of truth. He emphasizes that the church is not a business model but a family that forgives mistakes and values community. The central message is that the church must hold the Gospel steady as a foundation and defend it against false teachings. The preacher refers to the historical practice of internalizing truths of faith through hymns, since not everyone could read. He analyzes the verse as an early hymn that summarizes the incarnation, vindication, resurrection, and glory of Jesus. The sermon calls for a focus on the fundamentals of faith rather than being distracted by trivialities. It emphasizes the necessity of upholding truth through the Word of God and community.

So, some of you who have just returned from vacation: last time, before you left, we were still in Revelation, because the Germans have such long vacations. For those of you who haven’t kept up, we are no longer in Revelation. This is our fourth sermon today in this 316th sermon. We will then begin with the second book of Moses, once we are finished with that. But so far, we have preached John 3:16. 1 Corinthians, chapter 3, verse 16. Last week, Colossians 3:16 was up, and this morning we are in the first letter to Timothy, chapter 3, verse 16. And this is a letter that Paul wrote to Timothy, his son in the faith, to encourage him in the work of accompanying the congregation there in Ephesus as an overseer. This letter here is so to speak the foundation and the basis for how people are called into church leadership or into the ministries of the congregation. If you want to serve here, if you want to work together, then you have to fill out an acquaintance form. And on this acquaintance form, 1 Timothy 3:16 is actually listed. So, in chapter 3 here of the first letter to Timothy, we read here the requirements for service as a deacon. A great need for the guidance and for the leadership of ministries, so that the congregation is kept away from, held back from, any intentions that could harm the congregation. In verses 14 and 15 here, Paul clearly and distinctly describes the intentions of this letter. I am writing this to you in the hope of coming to you soon, but so that you, if I should delay my coming, know how one ought to conduct oneself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. That is the church. That is how Paul understands it and that is how he also communicates the church. That is the truth about the church, the house of God. Already in 1 Corinthians 3:16, he posed this question to them: Do you not know that you are God’s temple? And that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But we are not only a temple, but we are also a household. People often view the church as a business model. We make money with it, but it is a household, a family, and I must remind myself and also our congregation again and again of this. So, if someone made a wrong move on his guitar, if the text up there wasn’t quite right at the beginning of our live livestream, the livestream was totally crazy. So, we somehow tried to get this setting right. I preached way too long. If you are now running a business or a company, then you think: “Ah, man, this has to run perfectly here. How are we ever going to make money if we keep making these mistakes all the time?” But that is not our model. That is not what it is about in the church. We are not a business model. We are a family. And Paul makes this very clear in Timothy 4, so that he is very clear in his mind about it, but also to align our mind very clearly with it. It is not only the house of God, but it is also the church of the living God. We have also seen this in 1 Corinthians 3:16. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. And here it continues, and he speaks here of the pillar and the foundation of the truth. So, the most important part of any building is the foundation. The foundation provides stability. The church is responsible for keeping the Word stable against attacks from hypocrisy or also false teaching and yes, unbelief. It is not that the church is the foundation for the truth, but the church upholds the truth for the surrounding world, to see that. The truth was delivered to us once and for all. And that is the Scripture, the holy Scripture. The church holds
So, this foundation here is upright, but here it is also called the pillar, the cornerstone of the truth. The people back then in Ephesus understood this very well, quite clearly. In Ephesus at that time there was a great temple of Artemis and Diana, and it was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It had over 100 columns, which were over 18 m high, with this massive large shining marble roof. If Paulus now writes to Timothy that the church is the pillar of the truth, then the church does not only have a foundation to uphold this truth, but the church is also the column that upholds it, so that it stands upright and remains stable, so that all can see it. By reminding Timothy of what the church is and what it should do, he leads them back to the basics, the basics of the foundation of the truth, namely the Gospel. And that is something we as a church also need this morning, because as humans, as a people, we can easily be distracted, so with the basics, they often quickly bore us. Tell me something new. Tell me something controversial. Tell me about some matter where I can fight and argue with someone about it. What? How many angels can dance on the head of a needle? Well, we can exchange views on that all day long. There are millions of YouTube videos, you can spend your time watching them all day long, about the Nephilim, about whatever things, but Paulus says here, for the church to be stable, healthy, and effective, or is, we must ensure that we understand the basics. And now we come to 1 Timothy 3, verse 16. And acknowledged great is the mystery of godliness. God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed in the world, taken up into glory. [snort] Paulus writes this down from the early scholars believing that it was one of the first hymns. A thing that was taught back then and repeatedly repeated by the church. Not everyone had their own Bible back then. There were many people who did not even know how to read. The way they could then be equipped and hold on to these basics was that they hid them in their hearts through learning these hymns. Many people have problems memorizing Scripture, but if you start any advertising jingle, they can sing it all the way to the end, and yes, so I grew up with a song: Lord, You came from heaven to earth. [laughter] You came to show the way, to show the way from the earth to the cross. So Lord, I exalt your name. You came from heaven to earth to pay for our sins. From the earth to the cross to pay for my debt, from the cross to the tomb, from the tomb to heaven. I exalt your name, Lord. That itself contains the Gospel. And this here in 1 Timothy 3 verse 16 helps the church to understand what is so important and so fundamentally important. There were the super powerful, the super rich, and then there was approximately nothing in between, but all others were then either poor or slaves. Spiritual things were important, whether you were a Gentile or not. And Paulus said, these truths that I now lay out for you here or that I now remind you of, they are so, so important, [snort] because they were revealed to us by God, were prophetically revealed to us in the Old Testament, they were shown in the life, in the death, and in the whole service of Jesus Christ, and there will still be things that will also come to fulfillment. So in the time remaining to us, I want this verse
to examine more closely and break it down. The first is that God was manifested in the flesh. Perhaps in some of your Bibles it says that he was manifested in the flesh. We understand here that this is speaking of God. That is quite clear. Do we see this in the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verses 1 to 3? In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. Who is being spoken of here with the Word? The answer will be given to us here in verse 14. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. And we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. [sniffing] The first thing we therefore understand here is that God became flesh. We also have this in John 3, verse 16, [sniffing] for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son. So this eternal Son came down here, added humanity to his deity, and walked on this earth so that he could give his life, so that he could die for us. However, it continues here that he was justified by the Spirit. What does that mean? That everything he said and everything he claimed about himself was verified by the Holy Spirit. We see this in Matthew 3, verses 16 and 17, where Jesus is baptized. And when Jesus had been baptized, he came up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and remaining on him. And behold, a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." As [clearing throat] Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit came upon him and remained on him. And we see this in Luke 4, that his work and his life were effected and find their origin in the Holy Spirit. Verses 16 to 21 in Luke 4. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and as was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And the book of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." And he rolled up the book and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 22. And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." Fulfilled, fulfilled. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me. The entire ministry of Jesus rests on the fact that the Holy Spirit chose him and anointed him. Not only was his ministry and his work through the Holy Spirit, but also his resurrection. Paul expressed this as follows in Romans 1, chapter 4. And was declared to be the Son of God with power by the Spirit of holiness through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. So listen, all the things that Jesus claimed to be, all the promises he had proclaimed, went into the grave with him when he died. But the Holy Spirit raised him from the dead, so that he justified and showed that every promise he had made was true, because he lives, because he has risen from the dead. I know that I am forgiven. So I also know that I will also be raised. I know there is power in it to live a new life. All these things Jesus promises and assures those who believe in him. He was seen by angels. The next part, seen by the angels. This speaks
So, from this testimony that heaven gives regarding who Jesus is. Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted there by Satan. But out there, it was only him and Satan. Mark tells us in Mark 1, verse 13, that when it was over, the angels ministered to him there. Mm-hmm. Um, and he was there in the wilderness for forty days and was tempted by Satan, and he was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to him. So there was this testimony of the angels of all that Jesus went through there in the wilderness. They had already understood quite correctly what had happened in the garden in Paradise, where Adam had taken the bite. Here, then, is Jesus, the second Adam, and he overcomes. He stands victoriously over the lies of Satan, but they were not only there at his temptation, but also there at his greatest place of surrender. In Luke chapter 2, we read. When Jesus was just before he was betrayed, he was there in the Garden of Gethsemane. He lies on his face under very great stress. He knows exactly what lies before him. Can you get that for me? And it is written in Luke, Luke 22, verse 24. 22 24 um 42 okay 42 um and he said: "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done." In verse 43: "Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him." At that place, an angel cared for him and strengthened him. And we know that at the resurrection, angels were there, who witnessed it there. And when the women then came to the tomb, they encountered an angel who addressed them and asked, "Whom do you seek? Do you look for Jesus of Nazareth? He is not here; he has risen from the dead." What a great service the angels had in the life of Christ! Preached among the Gentiles, believed in the world. That was a very important matter then for the early church, but also still for us here today, that this message of Jesus, that he was the promised Messiah, the Savior, had come not only for Israel, not only for the children of Abraham in the flesh, but he had come for the whole world, and he was also proclaimed among the non-Jews. This message was for every man, so that people should accept this message from whatever direction it came. And here we sit now 2000 years later. He is still preached among the non-Jews, and in the whole world he is believed in. He still changes lives. He still saves sinners. He still sets people free. He still heals the broken hearts. He still opens the eyes of the blind. And therefore, this must be a matter that we must always remember again and again. And the last one is recorded here as "taken up into glory." So it seems as if this stands a bit apart here. Normally, one would think in terms of sequence that this "taken up into glory" should stand directly after "witnessed by the angels," because according to the Gospel, Jesus dies, rises again, and ascends to the right hand of his Father. And then in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit comes down to earth, and the good news of the Gospel spreads. It is preached among the non-Jewish nations, it is believed in the world. Why is "taken up into glory" at the end? At the beginning, God came to this world, was manifested in the flesh. Jesus came to this world. That is the first part of this hymn here, and it ends with him having been taken up into glory. I read a commentary by John Stott. John Stott has already passed away. And I thought to myself, perhaps that is the reason for it, perhaps that is the answer from this Bible commentator. Do you remember? At the ascension. Jesus had risen. He ascended into heaven and was taken up by the clouds, and his disciples stood there. Yes, they could not close their mouths at all and just stood
there. Wow. In the Acts of the Apostles it says there that two men, they were clothed in white. I believe that they were angels and they ask the people who were standing there, the apostles, why are you standing there looking up into heaven? They say, the same Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you have seen him go into heaven, physically, bodily, that is, in his resurrection body. And he will return to the Mount of Olives here in the first part in 1 Timothy 3 verse 16, where it says here taken up in glory into the glory. Is this an important fact about the ministry of Jesus? He was taken up in glory, but it is also a reminder that he will return in glory. So it also has an eschatological significance in this regard. And that is our hope. Now the question arises: Do you also have this hope? Do you have this foundation in your life? Have you placed your faith in Jesus, who came from heaven to this earth, who served in power? who spoke the truth, who laid down his life on the cross, who rose from the dead, who paid the full price for your sin and because he rose from the dead, he offers every individual forgiveness, not only forgiveness, but also renewal, a new heart, a new life, a new source of strength with which we can live, and has given us this promise that he will return. You can get to know him, you can walk with him. He can be your Lord and Savior. What must you do for that? Do it. Turn yourself to him. Turn yourself to him. Believe in him. God. I place my entire trust and my faith in you. I cannot simply remove my sin by myself. I cannot change my life, my heart, but you can. He has risen from the dead. So I place my hope in you. Come, give me a new heart. Give me a new life. Help me to walk with you, until you return for me. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.

Erzähl mir mal was Neues. Erzähl mir mal was irgendwie streitbares. Was? You came from heaven to earth. [gelächter] You came from show the way to show the way from the earth to the cross. Also Herr, ich erhebe deinen Namen hoch. Was musst du dafür tun? H tun. Ihm dich zuwenden. Ihm dich zuwenden. An ihn glauben. Gott. Amen.
