The Christian life consists in anchoring the word of Christ as the supreme authority in everyday life, in order to distinguish oneself from false teachings and pagan influences and to strengthen one another in community.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom. Teach and admonish one another, and sing to the Lord with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody in your hearts.
The preacher introduces the letter to the Colossians and emphasizes the supremacy of Jesus over all pagan gods and philosophical teachings. He warns against replacing the gospel with human traditions or new mysteries, and points to the necessity of not only knowing the truth but also living it. The central text, Colossians 3:16, is divided into three aspects: letting the word of Christ dwell in oneself, teaching and admonishing one another, and singing to the Lord. The preacher uses the image of 'living rent-free' in the head to describe the all-pervasive presence of the word in contrast to other voices such as social media or books. He criticizes a formal religiosity in which the service of worship serves as a stamp of approval for any kind of life, and calls for a profound transformation of everyday life through the power of the risen Christ. The sermon concludes with an exhortation to regard the word of Christ as a stable anchor in a transient universe.

So this morning we will continue in our series 316. We have gone through John 31 and last Sunday we did 1 Corinthians 316. Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Holy Spirit dwells in you? And that is a strong question that Paul asks the church in Corinth there. I am sure some of you have gone through all 31 verses in the New Testament to guess what comes next. That is very good. So, we are in Colossians this morning. And my dear daughter said earlier: "Yes, Papa, that is the verse for the church retreat." So she went back and got one of our notebooks here. That was the verse Colossians 316. Yes, Colossians, a brief introduction so that you get a little about the letter. Paul writes this letter from prison and he writes it to a church that he himself did not found and to which he had not even visited before. He was not their pastor, but that does not mean that he did not care for them, deeply with the love of Christ. And for many churches then in the first century after Christ it was so that they came out of the Roman or the Greek paganism. And others of them were Jews who had accepted the Messiah. And they lived a true faith, just as Abraham and David had done. They placed their faith in Jesus as the promised Messiah, the only Son of God, the true God, who was to come to die for our sins, who was victorious over death and who has set us free from the power of the enemy. These powerful statements about Jesus, which they had received from the apostle and the brother who had brought the gospel to this church. These things were sometimes doubted by false teachers or simply the culture in which they lived. The question was, was Jesus really enough? Was the cross really enough to save us? Was the resurrection really proof of the power of God that is available to us as believers? Was it really necessary to argue and fight about things like the Sabbath or circumcision? For Jesus was the fulfillment of all of that. Yes, the question was, how can Jesus keep up or compare with these Roman and Greek pagan gods, heathen gods? Was he just another god who could be added to this multitude of gods? And Paul writes this letter here to the Colossians to make it clear that Jesus was above all these gods. Okay, so in Colossians 1 verse 22, 15 to 22. 15 to 22 Paul writes: "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him all the fullness should dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him. That is Jesus. There is no one else like him. He is holy. He is wonderful. If you have recognized him and have been saved through him, then you are in a good position. And Paul warned the Colossians and encouraged them that no one should deceive them, and that they should not come to the idea of altering the doctrine of Jesus through any
to replace the popular but powerless human teachings. For example, in Colossians 2 verses 8 to 10 it says here: Beware lest anyone spoil you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world and not according to Christ. For in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of every rule and authority. That is so wonderful. But that is what is happening here. It happened then and it is also happening among us today. There are always people who try to tell us that Jesus is not enough for us, that you must add some other traditions. That you must understand some deeper secrets. YouTube. I watched a video on YouTube. That, that this video, the second video was about someone who had written a book about what it is like to spend 10 hours in heaven and he had this whole story there, about what it is like to meet Jesus and how that relates to eternity. And he had, and he had all this knowledge that only he personally had, because he personally had spent 10 hours in heaven and therefore he wants you to buy his book and read about his experience. I tell myself, okay, that, that is nice. I have the Bible here. I have Jesus interesting, what he experienced, but not for me. Thank you. There are two chapters here that Paul writes in Colossians, before we get to the passage we want to look at this morning. In these two chapters he establishes important doctrine. And he also always writes after that, watch out, we must believe the right things so that we will also behave in the right way in our life. I love Warren W. Wiersbe. [clears throat] He was a Bible commentator and pastor for many years and I believe he is now with the Lord and he writes: "It does not amount to much if Christians proclaim and defend the truth, but fail to live it out in the right way." And I think, we have all seen that in life, if you take someone who perhaps knows the whole Bible from beginning to end, but but there is no connection between what they know from the Bible and how they personally live. And that is exactly what happened in the pagan world. As long as you had brought your little sacrifice to the altar, to please God, then it did not matter how you lived otherwise. As long as you had brought your offering, you had pleased the gods. Then you could go away and live as you wanted. And that unfortunately also sounds like the church in this time sometimes. As long as I go to church, on Sunday to God get my stamp here. Sing a few songs, throw [snort] a few euros into the donation box, then I can go afterwards and live as I please. If that is the case, then you are no better than one of those pagans. And Paul writes: "It must not be so in the life of Christians." Okay, so he writes in Colossians 1, verse 28: "We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so as to present everyone mature in Christ Jesus. To preach Christ and warn everyone, to teach everyone with all wisdom, so that we can present everyone perfectly complete in Christ Jesus. That is the gospel. Not simply that Jesus died for your sin and now you are forgiven, but also that he rose again and the same power that raised Jesus from the dead also lives in us, gives us new life, gives us new strength, direction, a purpose. And that is lived out in our daily life. And Paul does not want them to only live for the heaven of one day in eternity, but that they already now live every day in the power of heaven. And our 316 text today gives us one of the great
important messages as Christians, that we do not deviate from the right life in which we ought to honor Jesus, but that we may be a blessing to all who live around us. So Lord, before we enter this text, let us pray, Lord, that you help us. You are our Teacher, Jesus, and your Spirit enlightens us. Help us, Lord. We want to receive from you today, Lord. We want to honor your name, Lord. We want to be a blessing to others. Help us, Lord. Amen. In Jesus’ name. Let us, let us read Colossians 3, verse 16. Let the word of Christ richly dwell in you, in all wisdom. Teach and admonish one another, and sing to the Lord with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, delightfully in your hearts. What a great verse. So here is the thing. We are using the Schlachter translation here. And when we look at the grammar of this Schlachter translation, it looks here at two different things. On the one hand, the word, and on the other hand, worship. But I would like to look today also at the grammar of the Elberfelder translation, because there it is divided into three different things. Let the word of Christ richly live in you. In all wisdom, teach and admonish one another. Sing with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to the Lord. In the Greek New Testament there are no commas and semicolons. Therefore, the translators must always do their best to figure out how the punctuation best fits. But the truth, the message behind it, is unaffected by this. The first point here: let the word of Christ richly dwell in you. It should be the word of Christ that has a place in our heart. So in each of us individually, but also in our community as a church. We have placed our faith in him for our salvation. If we look at what Paul said in the first chapter, then Jesus is the Creator and Redeemer. He is the Savior and the Lord. So either we believe that or we do not believe it. And we may perhaps say, yes, we believe it, but what does that really mean in our life? And Paul writes that the way we ought to live it out in life is that the word of Christ should richly dwell in us. So, there is this phrase in English. I do not know how well it translates into German. If someone is to live rent-free in your head, that means so much that someone influences your thoughts, day by day. Someone lives in your head, in your thoughts. Yes. And there are a thousand different voices that perhaps every day want to live in your head, in your thoughts, and want to take root there. Things from the past that perhaps have been said to you. Things that perhaps you hear in the news or on the radio. Thousands of different directions from which these voices come out. But as believers in Christ, we should let his word dwell in us. And in Matthew 24 Jesus says: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.” His word is more permanent, more stable than everything in the universe that surrounds us. Think about that. Everything that is here, that stands around here, will one day pass away. But the word of Christ will never pass away. That is something great. And that is why Paul writes: “Let the word of Christ richly dwell in you.” Who cares what the latest social media influencer has written? What concerns you, what some old guy has written in his book? What a professor perhaps tells from his podium? You know who has authority over heaven and earth? Jesus is that. Jesus. Therefore, it must concern us to learn what Jesus has to say, what his opinion is. He says this, Jesus says this in John 6:63, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I speak to you are”
Spirit and are Life. They have divine power and they give spiritual life. Is there anyone else in the world who can say such a thing? Is there anyone else whose words contain divine power and spiritual life? I know no one else, only Jesus. His teaching and His words are not separated from the Father. They contain the same power and authority for all those who hear, believe, and obey. For those who believe that Jesus’ teaching comes from God, they will be allowed to experience true spiritual freedom. Yes, let us look at the words of Christ in John 8, verses 28 to 32. Therefore Jesus said to them: “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He. And I do nothing on my own initiative, but as my Father taught me, so I speak. And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him. As He said this, many believed in Him. And Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in Him, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” In my word. It says here, if you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples. So, we should not only believe in Jesus. We should also be His followers, His disciples. That means, we learn from Him. We come to Him and ask Him the important questions of life. Who am I? Why am I here? [laughter] What will happen when I die? Come to Jesus with these questions and let Him answer these questions. Receive His words and then follow Him, and then you will find freedom. Freedom from all the confusion that fills this world and freedom from all the chains that hold us captive, whether they may be sin or religion. These are things that can indeed take us captive and hold us back. But Jesus’ word and His teaching bring us freedom. And this peace also brings us strength and stability in life. Jesus told a parable here that most of you probably already know. And He says, the one who hears My word and does it and puts it into practice, he is like the man who built his house on the rock, and when storms and floods come, the house will remain standing. But the one who hears My word but does not put it into practice is like the man who built his house on the sand. And when the storm and the floods come, his house will collapse, because there are no foundations. And you also sometimes see it happen in congregations. People who may have spent their whole life in the congregation, they know John 3, verse 16, they know the Bible. But because they have never trusted Jesus and obeyed Him, it happens that when life becomes difficult, when there are disappointments in life, their faith is washed away and you may ask yourselves, what happened to them? I thought they were Christians. Why are they now doing that? Why are they no longer in their faith? Why are they now living according to the flesh? That is because they heard, but did not put it into practice. So it is important that we believe and abide in Christ’s word and that we then bear much fruit in our life to the glory of God. So in John 15, verses 7 to 8 it says: “If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it will be granted to you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and become My disciples.” [snorting] If we live in Jesus’ words, then we will understand His heart and His mindset. And then we will also pray with the head and with the heart of Jesus. And God will then gladly answer these prayers, whether it is about our transformation in
Hearts. Perhaps, Lord, let us, let me love our fellow human beings. Sometimes I just want to slap everyone in the face. Help me, simply help me, Lord, to love people instead. Transform my heart, renew my, my, my head, my thoughts, pour out the Holy Spirit into my life. God will answer this prayer. Keep on praying such things and see how God will transform your, your life. My Pastor Jack has always said, pray God’s Word. Then you take, for example, a verse from the Bible, John 13 verse 34. And it says there: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” And then we simply say: “Lord, this is your commandment. You want me to love people, just as you love me. You know, I have very little of this love in me. Wait, Lord, give me the ability to do so. Give me the strength to do so. Take the much anger and frustration out of me and, and help me simply to truly love the others. This means abiding in the Word and that will then transform our life through prayer. And, uh, yes, focusing on Jesus or accepting him means accepting his Word. You cannot accept the world that rejects and, and mocks Jesus’ Word. You can only accept one, so if you accept one, you must reject the other. Jesus makes it clear that if you are ashamed of him, and of his Word, then you will have no place in his future kingdom. So Mark. Okay, so let us look at Mark 8 verse 38. For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. And then Jesus says here, if you are ashamed of me and my Word, then that is the same. So, you cannot say, yes, I love Jesus, but I disagree with the teaching on this and that point. I love Jesus, but I do not like that he says he is the only way to God. Those are one. That does not work. You cannot separate the two. There are four Gospels filled with the teaching of Christ. And Paul tells us that if we want to live in the teaching, in the truth that says what it is to be a follower of Christ. If we want to live a life that glorifies God and blesses our fellow human beings, then that life, the Word of Christ, whether it be his words or the Gospel as a whole, must have a home in our hearts. And that is also the question I have asked myself. Does the Word of Christ feel at home in my heart? If you have visitors at home, we say, make yourselves at home, and then they take off their shoes. The youth sometimes come to our house, then there is always a pile of shoes in the entrance area, then they make coffee or they cook something. They feel like at home with us and that is also what we want. We have told them that too. Make yourselves at home. Wordforable is the word feels, is it, does the Word of God feel comfortable in our hearts? Can it do what it wants in our lives, in our personal life and also in our church life. And I am very grateful that John 3 verse 16 has found a home in my heart. You have said, Lord, that if I put my faith in Jesus, then I will never perish, but have eternal life. And that you love me so much that you have let Jesus die for me. You did not come to judge the world, but that the world may be saved through you. And that is actually a fairly simple, basic verse, but lately it has worked intensely in my heart. There is a person who is in our neighborhood
is referred to. I think I have already told you about this, and they are truly strange. And old Edmund would say, yes, what is wrong with people? They are truly strange. And this verse, John 3 verse 17, hit me like a slap in the face. I did not come to judge anyone. I came to save. When will you say yes, when will you speak with him? When will you greet him? Hello, dear neighbor. I say, please do not come here. That is what happens when, when, when God’s word lives in us, then it will challenge us. This attitude that I had, that was wrong. Those activities there, they are wrong. Or this attitude here, that one is good. Keep it up. So think about the word of Christ. I also think about what it means that the word of Christ dwells richly in us. Not simply as a visitor, but as a permanent resident. If I ever fail or fall, if I stumble, if I sin, if the weight of guilt burdens me, if I try to get everything back under my own power, come to me. All you who are weary and burdened, I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am Ah, okay. For I am gentle and humble in heart. So you will find rest for your souls. My yoke is easy. And that is what it means, that is what must be at home in our hearts and continually leads us back to Jesus. If I worry about my provision, worry, there Jesus says, do not worry about the tomorrow. Seek first, seek first the kingdom of God. Seek God’s righteousness and all the other things will be added to you. And listen, all of that is good for me, I need that. And the second thing that Paul says here in the verse in Colossians 3 verse 16 is, we should use it and put it into practice to help one another. He writes here, in all wisdom teach and admonish one another. One another. You and you. You and you. You. You and you. You and you. Right. You and you, others, church, we do not come here to the service and learn something or perhaps memorize Bible verses just for ourselves. We learn it so that we can be close to God and grow and learn. But the command here is, the command here is, in all wisdom teach and admonish one another. That is something that each one of us should do in the congregation. So, first of all, we should know one another and have a certain relationship with each ot

Helf uns, Herr. Wir wollen von dir heute empfangen, Herr. Wir wollen deinen Namen ehren, Herr. Wir wollen ein Segen für andere sein. Hilf uns Herr. Amen. In Jesus Namen. Lass uns, lasst uns Kolosser 3, Vers 16 lesen. Was ein großartiger Vers. Ja. Alles was wir hier, was hier rumsteht, wird irgendwann vergehen. Jesus. Deswegen muss es uns kümmern zu erfahren, was Jesus zu sagen hat, was seine Meinung ist. He say this Jesus says this in John 663 says the spirites life und in Johannes 63 schreibt er: "Der Geist ist es, der lebendig macht. Also Mark. Okay, also schauen wir in Markus 8. Vers 38.
