The risen Christ opens even locked doors and makes new beginnings possible by transforming the wounds of suffering into transfigured signs of hope.
There is no door that remains closed to Christ. With him, it is necessary to always anew dare what seems impossible.
The text is an Easter address to two Carmelite convents that are coming together in Würzburg-Himmelspforten after the convent in Welden was closed following nearly a hundred years. The speaker takes the Easter event as a starting point: the risen Christ speaks peace to frightened disciples and enters through locked doors. These images are applied to the situation of the sisters: farewell, wound, new beginning, and the venture of a new shared life. Central theological motifs are the transfigured stigmata of Christ as a place of soothing one's own wounds and as gates of heaven. Teresa of Jesus is invoked as a model for courageous beginnings and trust in divine providence. The text concludes with a thank-you to both convents, an appeal to prayer, and a request for the intercession of the two holy Theclas.

Dear Carmelite Sisters of the Monastery of Himmelspforten and of the Monastery of Welden,
dear brothers in the spiritual office, dear Father Ulrich,
dear sisters and brothers in the Lord!
The Peace Greeting of the Risen One
"Peace be with you!" Such is the first word that the risen Lord addresses to his frightened disciples. How beautiful and how consoling! For indeed, the disciples were in a state of unrest. After the crucifixion of their Lord, they asked in bewilderment about the meaning of the past years. Moreover, they feared the embarrassing questions and persecutions of people. In their helplessness, they did what one always does when one is uncertain. One barricades oneself and withdraws from public life, so as not to encounter anyone and not to have to give an account to anyone of one's own situation. Fear makes the heart narrow. But the peace greeting of Christ makes the heart wide again.
Peace be with you! Let that also be my greeting today, dear sisters of both convents of Himmelspforten and Welden, here united in the Monastery of Himmelspforten. Turbulent years, months, and weeks lie behind you. Times of bewilderment, of reflection, of decision, and of parting. And now also of new arrival. May the peace of the risen Lord move into your hearts and may his peace accompany you on your next steps.
Jesus Comes Through Closed Doors
Let us not forget: Jesus comes to the disciples through closed doors. Since he has shattered the gate of hell through his Resurrection, as the Easter icon of the Eastern Church so meaningfully depicts, there is no door that could hold him back. No, the Lord also enters through our closed doors to us.
Teresa of Jesus describes in the seventh mansion of her Interior Castle in a striking way how Christ always anew enters the soul, just as on Easter Day. He comes as it were through closed doors, to speak his peace to us and to unite us with himself (M 7.2). In the unity with the risen Christ, it then becomes clear that everywhere where doors close in life, other doors open, indeed that the Lord in a sense passes through closed doors effortlessly.
You experienced this at your departure from Welden. After the doors had closed there, doors were newly opened to you here. An Easter experience, for the Lord always goes before us anew through closed doors, to pave ways into life for us. An important experience now also for the coming weeks and months. There is no door that would remain closed to Christ. With him, it is necessary to always anew dare the seemingly impossible.
Reconciliation with One's Own History of Wounding in the Wounds of the Lord
"After these words, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord," it says in the Gospel. The peace that the Lord speaks gains its strength from the contemplation of the wounds of the Lord. For it is only the wounds of the Lord that make it clear that he truly suffered death. Resurrection does not exist bypassing suffering or by ignoring suffering. Resurrection is only consoling when it becomes clear that the wounds have lost their deadly power. Thomas understood this very precisely. And only for that reason does Thomas so persistently insist on being able to truly touch these wounds of the Lord. He wants to be able to find refuge in the wounds of the Lord with all his own wounding and all his own pain.
An important Easter message also for your new beginning here in Würzburg, dear sisters from Welden. A farewell after almost a hundred years is painful. Even if the reasons for the farewell are rationally comprehensible, many questions remain and some wounds that ache. Was it not possible otherwise? How did it come to this? Should the tracks have been set earlier and differently? Idle questions, we know. But sometimes also tormenting questions. For the success of a new beginning, it is certainly helpful if one can take refuge in one's wounds and one's stories of injury in the glorified wounds of the Lord, like Thomas. And that is what I wish you from the bottom of my heart.
The glorified wounds of the Lord as the true gates of heaven
For Teresa of Jesus it was clear that faith is never abstract and worldly. True faith, that was her firm conviction, must always take its measure from the humanity of Jesus. And to all who have concerns about making the suffering of the Lord present to themselves in prayer, Teresa recommends: "If therefore our nature or frailty does not always bear it to think of the Passion, because it is painful, who forbids us to be with him as the Risen One, where we have him so near in the Sacrament. (…) Here (…) he is without need, full of glory, our companion in the Most Holy Sacrament, in whose power it apparently did not lie to remove himself from us even for a moment, strengthening some, encouraging others, before he ascended into heaven." (V 22.6)
As friend and guide he had still stood by her in all her distresses, Teresa confesses with full gratitude. In view of the glorified wounds of the Lord, therefore, the following holds: "I have clearly seen that we must enter through this door if we want his exalted majesty to show us great mysteries" (V 22.6). Indeed, the glorified wounds of the Lord are the true gates of heaven. They are the gates through which we enter with Christ into eternal life. They are the gates that will never be closed again and that always stand open to us, especially here in the monastery with the wonderful name "Gates of Heaven." This is something to be reflected upon anew always.
Not seeing and yet daring the new experiment in full faith
"Jesus said to him: Because you have seen me, you believe. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." This is the lesson from the encounter of the Risen One with the unbelieving Thomas. Only because he had pressed so relentlessly can we believe on the basis of his experience. Not seeing and yet believing. This now also applies to the novel experiment that you are beginning here. Two convents side by side on a monastery site: the monastery within the monastery. Yet it has always been the privilege of the religious women and men to be pioneers and to break new ground. Teresa of Jesus, the Madre Fundadora, knew a song about that. Again and again she began new things without yet knowing where the funds, the authorizations, or the supporters might come from. "Beginning is everything!" (F 13.4) was her motto. In the art of improvisation she was unbeatable.
Yet she was clear that the highest perfection does not consist in visions and raptures, but in making oneself conform to the will of God, so that "we perceive nothing that he wills without also willing it with our whole heart, and accepting the sweet as gladly as the bitter, provided only that we perceive that his majesty wills it." (F 5.10). For in view of his will, even the bitter becomes sweet. That is what I wish you from the bottom of my heart in overcoming all the difficulties that will arise in the time of getting accustomed and of arriving inwardly and of finding oneself anew here in Würzburg.
Looking back on her founding successes, Teresa prayed in amazement: "O my God, what a number of dealings have I not experienced in these matters, which seemed impossible, and how easily it fell to His Majesty to settle them, and what a shame it is for me that, in view of what I have experienced, I am not better than I am! (…) The Lord has brought everything about from such inadequate beginnings, that only His Majesty could raise it to the height at which it now stands. May He be praised forever." (F 13.7) May Teresa grant that you will one day be able to join her praise of divine providence, when the great work you have now undertaken in view of Him succeeds.
The Sunday of Divine Mercy
White Sunday is also celebrated as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. What could be more fitting for today's occasion? I thank the Carmelites of Himmelspforten for their mercy, their generosity, and last but not least their courage to open up a new future for the sister nuns from Welden on the ancestral monastery grounds. In mercy, it is now a matter of growing together and with one another as two convents. And perhaps also of growing into one another.
I also thank the Carmelites of Welden, who together with all contemplatives implore the mercy of God. Mercy is to be implored for the priests and their ministry, which lay so close to Teresa of Jesus's heart. But the mercy of God is also to be implored in the midst of a world that "is on fire," as Teresa once said. (CE 1.5) Yes, it is burning fiercely everywhere, such is our impression. Prayer is needed, and it is good to know that the company of those who pray in Himmelspforten has grown. For it is the praying ones who keep heaven open, which the wickedness of men seems to darken and close. Thank you for this important service in our days.
The two Theklas as patronesses of the new foundation in Würzburg
A final thought. Dear Carmelites, you have come from the Theklaberg in Welden to us in the Zellerau. The Theklaberg was dedicated to Saint Thecla of Iconium. According to tradition, she was a disciple of the Apostle Paul. The old Church highly venerated her as a witness of faith, a virgin consecrated to God, and a protomartyr, that is, the first woman to have suffered martyrdom.
Here in Würzburg we also venerate a Saint Thecla. It is Thecla of Kitzingen. She came to Franconia with Saint Boniface. As a Benedictine, she first served under Abbess Lioba in Tauberbischofsheim until she was then appointed abbess of the women's monastery of Kitzingen. There she worked fruitfully and, on the basis of her experience, helped to reform the monastery in the spirit of Saint Benedict and to advance further foundations, such as the founding of the monastery in Ochsenfurt. A proven expert and patroness, then, for monastery foundations of all kinds and for the relocation of convents. The senior home of the Caritas in Würzburg bears her name in her honor, "Theklaheim."
May the two holy Theclas, as sisters in spirit, unite in their intercession. May they spread their protective hands over your new beginning here and bless your joint work at the united site. As bishop, I welcome you today very warmly, together with all our faithful in the Diocese of Würzburg!
The risen Lord accompany your joint new beginning and strengthen you in the Easter hope for a good start. Amen. Hallelujah!

Amen. Halleluja!
