The rise of the AfD is a symptom of the failure of established politics to combat economic inequality, which undermines democratic legitimacy and must be restored through structural justice.
Income inequality endangers democracy
The essay analyses the election result in Saxony-Anhalt and the strong support for the AfD as an expression of deep dissatisfaction with the current federal government. The author argues that the anger of voters is less attributable to ideological convictions than to economic disappointments, in particular to inflation and growing income inequality. She criticises the government for its inability to recognise and solve these structural problems, as well as for its adherence to unpopular figures such as Jens Spahn. The main cause of citizens' democratic withdrawal is identified as the endangerment of the social promise of attaining prosperity and security through work. The text warns that economic inequality undermines democracy when citizens see no personal benefit in the system. As a remedy, the author proposes concrete political reforms, including a wealth tax for billionaires and the introduction of direct democratic elements such as citizens' assemblies. She emphasises that voting for the AfD is primarily an act of protest against established politics, which must be defused through constructive alternatives and structural justice.

Protest at the Expense of Democracy and the Search for Answers
Saxony-Anhalt has voted, and the shock runs deep. While voting for the AfD will not solve problems, but rather create new ones, this spite vote also raises questions about the genuine alternatives remaining for dissatisfied citizens.

On Monday, a chastened Federal Chancellor appeared before the press. “We did not expect it in this form,” he said about the election result. Others, however, had expected exactly that. The actual vote share of the AfD had increased further compared to the polls. Whether there is a direct connection to the appointment of Jens Spahn, for whom Transparency International is demanding an investigative committee into his conduct in office, precisely in the week before the election and precisely to the Budget Committee, is not proven, but would be hardly surprising.
The insistence on this personnel decision highlights, under the magnifying glass, the misjudgment of reality by the current Federal Government. If one repeatedly decorates the most unpopular politician in Germany with new offices despite numerous failings, one should not be surprised when people develop anger toward an “elite” that apparently does not have to fear consequences, while they themselves can be dismissed if they take food leftovers from work.
Merz knows that “we all need to get better together. And I am looking for ways to achieve that.” – One can wait and see. Because he himself has previously refused to draw consequences and remains in office. Instead, he wants to better explain the planned unpopular reforms. However, a lack of understanding of these reforms may not be the problem at all. Perhaps people have understood very precisely what the government intends and consciously reject it. The arrogance inherent in this statement once again shows how little Merz, as part of the problem, will be able to solve it.
Much has been speculated in recent weeks about the reasons for the AfD’s success. So much, in fact, that it was more about listing reasons why the AfD should not be voted for than about what constructive counter-proposals exist. After taking power at the federal level, the Union-led government sought to take the wind out of the AfD’s sails through uncompromising restriction of immigration. In doing so, it lost sight of two things: First, that not all migration needs to be uniformly prevented (for example, to offset the shortage of skilled workers or to honor commitments to people who have already proven their loyalty to the state here at personal risk in Afghanistan), but rather that oversight should simply be improved. And that the discourse-dominating topic of migration may in any case only be a symptom of a much deeper underlying cause.
Income Inequality Endangers Democracy
Xenophobia often arises when scapegoats are sought for already existing problems. These problems have been building up since the Corona pandemic and the Ukraine war: the massive inflation of recent years, which no longer allows today’s generations to fulfill the life promise of the Federal Republic. Namely, to earn a living through work and to be able to build up assets over time with which one can acquire real estate and enjoy a pleasant old age. Instead, more and more people are living from hand to mouth, while social inequality is exploding at the same time. And the most money is earned not by those who perform systemically relevant professions.
As early as 2023, a study by the Hans Böckler Foundation found that this income inequality endangers democracy. Accordingly, certain groups distanced themselves from the democratic system, and these people have now voted. Economic reasons are thus becoming a disaster for liberal coexistence, as they are not sufficiently valued in comparison. Therefore, the warnings heard everywhere are not shocking if one sees no advantage for oneself in democracy. “First comes feeding, then comes morality,” as it is said in “The Threepenny Opera,” written in 1928, when a democratic system had already failed to convince people of its merits on a lasting basis. What followed, we all know, and no one wants it again, not even the voters of the AfD: For they do not actually want the AfD to govern. They mainly want to express their protest against the current policy: 87 percent of voters in Saxony-Anhalt are dissatisfied with the federal government.
The election of an authoritarian party is a dangerous and short-sighted method of resistance. Yet it appears to people more effective than many other things: Even though it has become easier to be heard through petition platforms and social media, the willingness of the addressees to take this seriously has decreased, perhaps also because it has become difficult to keep track of them in this flood. An open letter in a daily newspaper still carried a completely different weight before the internet age. So how is one to tell those who govern one that one is dissatisfied? One possibility would be the creation of elements of direct democracy, for example through citizens’ assemblies and nationwide referendums. Yet three-quarters of a year ago, the incumbent federal government dissolved the staff unit for citizens’ assemblies in the Bundestag. A step in the opposite direction.
That the country needs a major overhaul is beyond question, after all, much has changed since many structures that still exist today were established in the post-war period. The age structure has changed, for example, and the absolute majority of non-religious people in the population is imminent. This must be taken into account, but in what form? It certainly does not help if the silent majority is bullied by their elected representatives while they keep the country running: They do not work enough. They go to the doctor too often. They have too few children. And while they are stuck in the cold progression and civilizational necessities (such as housing) become unaffordable, the supposed solution is that they should have to pay more co-payments for their medications (many of which are not covered in the first place).
The federal government now believes that the reforms only need to be pushed through more resolutely. However, whether they might be the wrong ones is a question that, at least, the Union apparently does not want to ask itself now, after all, considerable effort has already been invested in the current projects (for detailed criticism of individual planned measures, read here). An immediate form of assistance could be a wealth tax on billionaires, who pay far too little tax compared to average earners, as they are better able to minimize their tax burden. We are currently seeing in the USA that people with exorbitantly excessive amounts of money develop strange power fantasies. Therefore, it would be both a protective measure for democracy and a solution to many funding problems. One could once again turn to forward-looking tasks (such as adaptation to climate change). In addition, rigid administrative structures could be examined closely so that projects can be implemented more quickly. The abolition of the civil service status and the consolidation of health insurance funds would also make existing funds available to the general public and reduce duplicate structures. However, it is doubtful whether the Union is capable or willing to abandon its clientelistic politics in favor of genuine improvement and, last but not least, the preservation of democracy.
