By copying AfD positions and pursuing an unsocial policy, the CDU has lost its democratic credibility and must now clearly position itself against right-wing extremism and in favor of the rights of marginalized groups.
Rather, the CDU must now urgently recommit itself to preserving democracy in all states and, together with all democrats, to taking on responsibility. This also includes safeguarding the diversity of society.
The text responds to the 2026 Saxony-Anhalt state election, in which the AfD falls just short of an absolute majority. The CDU is criticized for having lost votes through reforms and by copying AfD positions such as the 'gender ban'. It is argued that the CDU has undermined its claim to be a people's party through a policy that favors the rich and lobbyists. The case of CDU Economic Council chairman Frank Gotthard is cited as an example of the party's dangerous inconsistency. The queer community is portrayed as the AfD's enemy image and, according to the text, needs protection from discrimination. The text calls for the Basic Law to be supplemented with gender and sexual identity and for the preservation of queer spaces. The CDU is called upon to recommit itself to democracy and the protection of human rights.

As the federal association for trans*, intersex, non-binary, and agender persons, we are appalled by the unfortunately predictable result of the state parliamentary elections in Saxony-Anhalt.
The fact that a party classified as right-wing extremist in parts is for the first time only narrowly below the absolute majority is more than concerning. According to surveys, approximately 60% of AfD voters are not to be attributed to the right-wing extremist camp. If one believes the surveys, most of them come from the CDU and previous non-voters.
The double-digit losses of the CDU clearly show that it has not done itself any favors with its general federal political reforms and some cheap borrowings from the AfD, such as the "gender ban" in Saxony and other states. Not to mention the stalled new regulation of trans* healthcare under Health Minister Warken and the abominable registration data regulation, which still looms threateningly in the drawer of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Whoever makes politics only for the rich and some economic lobbyists instead of balanced reforms for all people has not understood that this damages the claim to being a people's party. Socially just distribution of the burdens of demographic change and international crises looks different.
Is it coincidence or intent that a person like the entrepreneur Frank Gotthard, honorary chairman of the CDU Economic Council, who has amassed over one billion in wealth through much of what federal health policy brings with it in terms of business, nevertheless feeds the far right with his own far-right medium?[1] Does this case rather show the diversity of a people's party or a dangerous inconsistency regarding one's own understanding of democracy? We know all too well what happens when well-funded loudspeakers take over opinion formation. A reform of the wealth tax would probably not suit people like Mr. Gotthard, but would solve some budget problems.
Copying from the AfD does not work to trim it down. Rather, the CDU must now urgently return to preserving democracy in all states and taking responsibility together with all democrats. This also includes securing the diversity of society.
That it can be done differently is shown by the state governments led by the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Schleswig-Holstein. Here, there is obviously little inclination to fall for the AfD. That is a good thing.
The queer community in Saxony-Anhalt, in particular trans and non-binary persons, is now facing more than challenging times. They are the enemy image of the AfD and need protection from discrimination more than ever. Article 3 of the Basic Law lacks queer people as the last victim group of the National Socialists; an addition of the article regarding gender and sexual identity is now absolutely necessary.
Queer spaces must be preserved, and CSDs as political demonstrations and thus a fundamental democratic right must continue to be enabled. Trans* rights are human rights, which we as the federal association and as the community repeatedly remind. And what, please, is more conservative than protecting human rights and human dignity, dear CDU?
