Greenpeace on the August 2026 Heat Record

The current political support for fossil fuels by the federal government prevents the necessary reduction of CO2 emissions and leads to an escalating climate change with deadly consequences.

The escalating heat wave can only be slowed down if we stop burning oil, coal, and gas.

The text refers to the heat record in August 2026 and cites specific casualty figures as well as economic damages in Germany. It sharply criticizes the federal government for amending the Building Energy Act in favor of the oil and gas lobby and for planning the construction of additional gas power plants. The central message is that 'business as usual' is unacceptable in light of the escalating situation. As a solution, the rapid and significant reduction of CO2 emissions through the abandonment of fossil fuels is demanded. The text argues that only in this way can it be prevented that extreme heat occurs more frequently in the future and people die. A direct connection is established between political action, fossil energy, and climate change.

Never since the beginning of weather records has the Earth been hotter than in this August. In Germany alone, nearly 16,000 people have died from the extreme heat since June. The heat-related damages have cost the country at least 36 billion euros. The response to these shocking figures must not be business as usual. The world is burning, literally. And the federal government continues to pour oil on the fire: it is sawing away a modern building energy law in favor of the oil and gas lobby, delaying the phase-out of internal combustion engines, and planning the mass construction of additional gas power plants. Yet the answer to the extreme summer is obvious: to prevent it from burning even more frequently in the future, and to prevent even more people from dying every summer, CO2 emissions must be reduced, as clearly and quickly as possible. The escalating heatwave can only be slowed down if we stop burning oil, coal, and gas.
