Humility
Gratitude is not a polite gesture but a conscious inner attitude that preserves one's own happiness because it nurtures the relationship with God and with one's fellow human beings and breaks through the blindness to what has been received.
Whoever offers a sacrifice of praise glorifies me. And that is the way by which I will show him the salvation of God.
The text deals with the theme of gratitude as a path to happiness. The starting point is the biblical narrative of the exodus from Egypt and the subsequent crisis at the place of Massa and Meribah, where the people forget God and put him to the test. The preacher transfers this to the human tendency to quickly forget positive experiences and, in times of crisis, to see only the negative. Gratitude is described as a conscious practice that one must cultivate in order not to become blind to what has been received. The central Bible verse is Psalm 50:23: Whoever offers a sacrifice of praise glorifies God, and God will show him salvation. The story of the ten lepers (Luke 17) is used as an illustration: only one out of ten returned to give thanks and received, in addition, deliverance. The text combines psychological observations (ingratitude leads to loneliness, envy, and dissatisfaction) with theological interpretation: gratitude is not polite behavior but an attitude of relationship that preserves one's own happiness.

Yes, it is nice to be with you again, and moreover, on such a beautiful topic. You can see that this builds upon a train of thought that has occupied us and continues to occupy us from time to time. I know this topic is not exactly new, but I intend to perhaps gain another perspective on it together with you, so that we may understand it a little more deeply. That is what we are going to deal with this morning. To that end, we begin very early in the Bible with the basic experience that the people of Israel had. That was the Exodus from Egypt, where the people had experienced God in a most wonderful way, an incredible story of escaping Pharaoh and then passing through this Sea of Reeds; God had performed a miracle. And then, all of a sudden, six weeks later, only six weeks later. And what happens? Yes, the people are in a crisis in the wilderness at Rephidim, and they have nothing to drink. Before that, they had already had nothing to eat. That was bad enough, but we all know that especially during a heat wave, having no water, having nothing to drink, is even worse. And they are on the verge of stoning Moses, and they lament and complain, saying, “If only we had been in Egypt. It was so nice there. At least we had meat to eat, and there was plenty of onions and garlic.” And the slavery in Egypt is completely forgotten, in light of what they are currently suffering, as if they had never experienced anything with God. What kind of people are these? Well, I would say, just like us, or quite ordinary people; it is forgotten so quickly when we have experienced something positive and suddenly find ourselves in a crisis; then we are only focused on the negative and live as if we knew nothing about what had come before. This story is described as a testing of God. That is why God named the place, or Moses named the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites tested God there and provoked the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” That was the question. Does God even exist? Was it all just a sham, just an illusion, what we had experienced up to that point? And this holds true even into the New Testament. There is a passage that is well known to us, but perhaps we can place it differently in this context. “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” This is always valid. But now comes the reference: “Just as it happened at Massah, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers tested and tried me, though they had seen my works.” So, even into the New Testament, this event is referred to as a testing of God, as an impairment of the nature of God. And I think, can that really be true? Does God need that? Does it fit our image of God that God is an angry and hurt God, just because the people behaved so inappropriately? That seems rather petty and very human, does it not? Surely God stands above that? I would expect at least that from myself, from us, I don’t know, if the grandchildren forget to say thank you and just take the gift and that’s it, and we move on to the next thing. I would stand above that, wouldn’t I? Even if I might get a little annoyed for a moment. Does God need our thanksgiving, as we might need it? I think that is not the point; rather, it is about the relationship, about the relationship that God has with his people. He chose this people. He led this people out of the wilderness, or through the wilderness, out of Egypt. Not because they were anything special, but because he loved the people and because he had something great in mind for them. And that relationship should be nurtured, lived out, should it not? Even when we are with people to whom we do good, it is not about receiving a receipt, so to speak, for what we have done, but rather about whether it becomes clear that the relationship is right, that we love each other, that we
We rejoice in one another, and that is why we also say thank you to each other. One forgets it very, very quickly. That is just how we humans are. It is interesting that God gave his people Israel a special opportunity to remember what they owe to God. In addition to all the sacrifices in the Old Testament, there is a so-called thank offering. This falls completely outside the norm. Israel has many sacrifices, but they are all negatively marked in some way. That is, it always concerns guilt, failure, or a relational disturbance. It is about straightening out something, making it right, compensating for it. Here, however, it is only about saying thank you to God, expressing oneself positively, and reflecting back to God what we have in him. And I believe that it is important and helpful to become consciously aware of this, so that we do not so quickly forget the reasons for giving thanks. Giving thanks to God does not fall into our lap. And therefore it is important that we repeatedly become consciously aware of this. My wife sent me a detective puzzle book for my birthday a few years ago. Um, here the point is to discover the perpetrator in his dark tone. I do not know if you can see that here. It is quite difficult. I also have a special 40x magnifying glass with illumination for it. And if you look very closely, you will see here that he is just throwing a person down from the battlements. I have since made a small sticker there so that I can find it again later. I mean, we do not discover it right away. One must take a little time if one looks superficially at such a picture book. If you look superficially at your life and immediately the next thing comes again and occupies you and captures you, then you will not notice it. And therefore we need in our life repeatedly times where we consciously take the magnifying glass and look: where was God in my life? Where do I have something to give thanks for? So, we do this every evening by looking back on the day before going to bed, saying what actually happened today? Or I keep a kind of minimalist diary where I only record certain highlights, not a protocol of the day. Otherwise I have the feeling that I have not lived at all, that I have not experienced anything. Above all, I have not experienced anything with God. Or another image that I like to use for this is the image of text editing with the help of a highlighter. So, if I have a text, a book or a script somehow, I no longer really know at the end what was written at the beginning. Therefore, I always use the highlighter to underline the most important thoughts, and then I can still find the basic ideas in a book later on. I can no longer give it away, let alone sell it, but I can find things because I have highlighted the important parts and can now recognize them. And I think that is also behind this well-known verse: Praise the Lord, my soul, and all that is within me praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits. If I forget that, then I am soon alone with myself again. Because ungratefulness is above all an own goal, and therefore I must, for my own sake, cultivate and nurture giving thanks. Ungratefulness makes blind. Ungratefulness is not bad manners that parents can correct. Saying, Grandpa, say thank you, or oh, I wanted to thank you. That is not what it is about at all, but it is about this relational level that I do not perceive at all. I am a person who lives in a web together with others and owes something to all possible people. How good is it that I have these people around me? Then I am in the process of believing that I owe everything to myself, that I can afford everything by myself, that I can manage everything by myself. I do not need the others.
truly. I am completely preoccupied with myself. So, if someone has everything possible, that is quite difficult, to give them joy, isn’t it? To find something for them, and if they then accept it, then it is, it is okay. Yes, it was a nice gesture. But if someone does not have much and knows, I am dependent on being gifted, on receiving, like a child, for example, then there is a completely different joy there. One experiences it much more intensely. And if I increasingly drift into taking everything for granted, I rob myself. I rob myself of joy, or with the topic that I have placed above this, of happiness. I no longer experience happiness, but I rush through life. I check one thing after another off the list. So, ingratitude makes one blind to the fact that I am gifted with people, with things that are not self-evident. Nothing is self-evident. And then, of course, it belongs to this that ingratitude becomes powerful. So, with all understanding, with all patience, eventually one is also tired of it. And thinks, then I will give her nothing more. It brings nothing anyway. So, it also gives me no joy. It belongs to this, of course, that it also gives joy to gift someone else, doesn’t it? If it does not give me joy either, then we can also just leave it out, and then I will also become lonely. Then no one cares about me anymore, [snort] because I am precisely a hardened egoist, who revolves only around myself and thinks only of myself. And this can naturally escalate to the point that loneliness actually makes one sick, ingratitude actually makes one sick. So, I become envious, dissatisfied. I no longer see the positive that I have, that I receive, but I only see that it goes even better for others, that they have more. I compare myself, and but what comes out for me from that? I no longer perceive it at all. It is below my threshold of perception. And then I become dissatisfied and can fall into a spiral, that I become increasingly grumpy, more dissatisfied. Actually becoming unfit for life, unbearable for others and ultimately for myself as well. So far so familiar, isn’t it? This is the pastoral, the psychological level, that one comes to, if one thinks a little about the topic of gratitude. But we are not at the core of the topic with this. We come to the core when we look deeper. And we want to do this with the help of a small Bible verse, which however has a key function for me. In Psalm 50 verse 23 it says: “Whoever offers thanksgiving as their sacrifice glorifies me.” And this is the way that I show him the salvation of God. Whoever offers thanksgiving does something that God rejoices in, and God reacts to it, namely he shows me the salvation of God, in which my happiness ultimately truly consists. There is in the New Testament a well-known story that makes very clear what it is about. I will read it to us. Luke 17, the story of the ten lepers, who were all sick and asked Jesus to help them in the original text. On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus came to the border between Galilee and Samaria. When he came to a village there, ten lepers stood at a distance and called out: “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” He looked at them and said: “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And while they were on their way, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back, praising God with a loud voice. And he fell at Jesus’ feet, glorifying God. This man was a Samaritan. Jesus asked: “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Did not anyone return to give glory to God except this foreigner?” And he said to the man: “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” This story makes clear the core of what Psalm 50 is about. What consists the happiness of these people respectively? For nine, it consists in the fact that they have become healthy. And each of us, who
Anyone who has suffered a few more illnesses than just an occasional cold knows how wonderful it is to get well. And these people return to their ordinary, normal existence, and soon they are once again involved in all the problems that make up everyday life in Israel back then and in our lives today. And then we forget about it again. Anything can happen. An exodus from Egypt can happen. Healing from leprosy can happen. Soon you are back in the problems of everyday life, perhaps even as harsh as Israel experienced in the wilderness, and then everything is forgotten. So, they experienced health. They experienced being resocialized and being able to live normally again. Of one, Jesus says that he experienced even more, namely, your faith has saved you. Rise and go. This man comes and thanks God. Thanks be to God. He gives God the honor. What did he experience more? He consciously experienced that God encountered him. He experienced that God had mercy on him, that God has the power to change his situation, that God is able to bring him out of isolation, to heal him physically. He experienced God. That is his happiness. And there is a significant difference whether my happiness consists in becoming healthy and having a wish fulfilled and a problem solved. Or whether my happiness consists in encountering God, recognizing God, and being on the road with God. Two completely different definitions of happiness, although there are naturally overlaps. Quite clear. Only to this one does Jesus say, your faith has even saved you. He takes more with him than just health. He also became healthy. Quite clear. Let us become aware of the consequence of this. It means, namely, that happiness, gratitude is not dependent on life circumstances. So each of us will also experience difficulties, and we are not in a mood to give thanks, are we? Rather, there we pray, we wrestle, we are desperate, perhaps we even accuse God. But it is a conscious life decision to say, I want to look for God in everything throughout my life. God is my happiness. And the challenge is to discover God in the busy book of my life in each instance. In beautiful situations, it is no difficulty, but also in difficult ones. And that is a life decision. I want to understand my happiness in the fact that I know God and am on the road with God. And I cultivate this by constantly looking for where God appears in my life, always taking time for it, and also processing it, highlighting it, making it conscious to myself. I have mounted some objects on the wall in my room upstairs, near the edge, which stand for my biography, for my life with God. Things for which I am particularly grateful. That I have this before my eyes, I of course do not always look at it, but it is present and not somewhere on the edge. And I believe that this is Christian life art, that we learn to understand our happiness from God. I do not know if you looked closely. I made a mistake at the beginning with the slides. On the introductory slide it says, uh, gratitude, the happiness, the way to becoming happy, and later it says the way to being happy. And now I thought, no, that is fine. It remains a lifelong task. It is the way to becoming happy. It is the way to being happy here and now, and it is the way to remaining happy. Because each of us comes to challenges where it is quite difficult for him to really see the positive. In the New Testament, this appears again and again. I have taken out a few pieces here. Paul writes in Philippians 4 verse 6: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." Paul does not say, pray all the beautiful things for which you can only be grateful out loud,
but it is also about pleading. It also includes asking. Here the situation is quite clear, the one he paints before the Philippians. There are also difficult situations; they knew that even better than we do today, because Christianity was by no means as self-evident and, uh, accepted as it was today, or yes, with thanksgiving. Look, where you can thank God, especially there where you plead and ask and do not really know where it leads next. There is a very striking and beautiful Psalm 42/43. It is actually a double psalm, where there is always, like a refrain, this one sentence or these sentences. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. This is how the Luther Bible translates it. So, anyone who looks at the psalm sees that the psalmist laments and mourns, and then he shakes himself and says: "Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God, keep at it, for you know it. You know it, soul. I shall again praise him. I shall again praise him. For what? That he helps me with his face, that he is the help of my face. That means that I come into eye contact with God again. In the Aaronic Blessing it says at the end: "The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you, so that you again have the gaze toward God." And so the psalmist prays again and again, after things have gone badly for him. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? You know the way, and it is called waiting, enduring, sticking with it. Wait for God, and for this there is a basis, for this there is a reason. This is not just optimism. You can already know now, you will again thank him, that he helps you and is the help of your face and your God. There is a Bible verse with which some have grown up, and it has not always done well for everyone. It is in 1 Thessalonians 5 verse 18, where it says: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus with regard to you." Some were raised in such a way that they said, no matter what happens, I must now give thanks. I thank you, God, I live against myself. This is nothing else than dressage. [cough] This is nothing else than dressage and a lie. I am not grateful. Here I think something quite different is meant. It is not sin. It is not failure if I sometimes forget to thank God in the midst of difficulties. I understand it precisely from this approach. God’s will for you in Jesus Christ is that you are grateful in all things. That is what God intends with you, that he reveals himself to you in such a way, that you see him in such a way, that you find happiness in all things, can be happy, can endure tensions. Yes, and this naturally extends to the last days of our lives, where it really becomes not easy to give thanks, where one sees nothing positive anymore. And sometimes the suffering is so bad that one has no hope at all here in this world. And then one perhaps looks forward and thinks, and nevertheless there is also God’s future for me beyond this, where I am currently stuck. So, what is the Christian art of life? What is it about? Gratitude. Gratitude in all life situations. This has significant implications. Implications for the interpretation of my past. So especially when one is older, I am also slowly starting to get older, I have noticed, one looks back and perhaps sees the great lines in one’s life, which one did not see at all in the midst of it. One looks at that and thinks: "Wow, God did it well. I did not understand it so well. So, I can at least very clearly discern this for myself in all the caves and depths. When we moved away from Hamburg back then, after my second period of service, someone gave us a scenic flight over Hamburg with such a small
A sports plane, and I saw my area, where I had lived, completely differently. The streets. Ah, so that is how it all connects. And the tributaries flowing into the Alster, and so on, where I had lived. So I look at my life and, in retrospect, see something entirely different, which I had never valued in that way, and many things that I had wished to be completely different, about which I had been annoyed, were good. God used them. How good that it did not happen as I would have wished, as I would have done it myself, but that God was there. And that is what needs to be discovered. Happiness, I repeat it once more, consists in discovering God in all situations of your life and drawing benefits from it. And that is, of course, also a confident look at my present. So, if we were to gather together now all the problems and worries we brought with us this morning, or would we bec

Und was passiert? Also steht Gott da nicht drüber? Also, ich werde neidisch, unzufrieden. Da kann passieren, was will. Dank sei Gott. Was betrübst du dich, meine Seele und bist du unruhig in mir? Was betrübst dich meine Seele und bist du unruhig in mir? Also, was ist die christliche Lebenskunst? Worum geht es? Dankbarkeit. Dankbarkeit in allen Lebenslagen.
