Would You Tell a Stranger About Jesus? Realtalk with Annegret Schumacher and Jessi

Actively sharing the gospel with strangers is a duty of every Christian, which is enabled and facilitated by regular training and inner spiritual fullness.

I believe it is the task of everyone. I believe for everyone it can look a bit different, that where you are placed, yes, maybe you are a businesswoman, businessman and you are a lot in the working world and God wants to use you exactly there

The text is an interview in which the speaker Jessi Schumacher describes her experiences with evangelising strangers on the street. She describes her personal journey from an inner encounter with Jesus through overcoming the fear of rejection to regular outreach. A central element is training in the form of courses such as 'Firecamp' and a multi-month evangelism school, which gave her tools and confidence. The speaker emphasises that sharing the gospel is a task for every Christian, which however must flow from an inner fullness through God. She reports of mixed reactions from passersby, but sees a growing openness in Germany. The text combines personal testimonies with biblical foundations and encourages other Christians to approach people courageously.

How can I tell people about Jesus, and how can I do that with strangers? I want to talk about this exciting topic with Jessie today. Welcome, Jessie. Hello, good morning. It’s great that you tuned in, Jessie. We’ve known each other for a while, and I got to know you as someone who has always been very enthusiastic about sharing her faith, about sharing about Jesus. Please take us along a little. How did it come about in your life, um, that you started talking to strangers or to people in your circle about faith? Mhm. Yes. Um, I believe, well, the decisive reason of all was truly that radical encounter with Jesus that I had. The moment when I realized, okay, I always knew God was there, but this living God who encountered me, and my heart was truly full. And in that moment, I realized that it had an influence, um, on my friends, on my family. I told everyone about this encounter. I told them, um, whenever I had read something in the Bible that touched me in some way, or when I had experienced something. And yes, after a while, actually, I think two years later, um, I took a course called Firecamp, a weekend, no, a whole week. And there I learned how to approach strangers, because before that, if I had automatically, or so, yes, entered into a conversation, or spoken with someone on the train and it had developed naturally, then I could talk about Jesus, but I wouldn’t have known how to simply start talking about Jesus on the spot with a complete stranger, and that Firecamp helped me a lot with that. Can you tell us a bit more about that? By now, you are a person who very regularly goes out onto the street to approach completely random people on the street, to tell them the Gospel, and to invite them to make a life decision for Jesus. How do people react to that? Yes, very differently, actually. Um, the Bible says that, um, God has already marked and prepared people, and only those who are prepared come to the Father; He draws them. Yes, and indeed, my prayer is always to find these people, to be out and about with spiritually open eyes. And when I approach people like that, they are open, they are open, you can pray for them, they stop, they take the time. But of course, there are also people who immediately say, um, who hear the name Jesus and are like: “No, absolutely not.” And I have nothing to do with that. But I have noticed, on this journey where I am now with God, um, and learning to tell people about Jesus, I would say, now after several years, um, more people stop with whom I can truly talk, than at the very beginning. And still, and I found that astonishing too, to hear, see, and experience it myself, people in Germany on the street, now in Wandheim, where we are right now, are open to the Gospel and actually make a life decision for Jesus. That is, of course, the first step, and after that comes, so to speak, their way with Jesus, the accompaniment in that. But that actually happens, so to say, people in Germany, people in your and my circle, are open to the Gospel. Mhm. Um, that is often the impression, but I think it’s not true at all, or? What is your experience? Mhm. That they are not open? Yes, so what is your experience? Are they open or are they not open? Fifty, somehow, well, there are days when they are more open, I notice, okay, every person I approach, they at least stop, or I am allowed to pray for them. But there are also days when I think, oh, somehow, I don’t know, were my the spiritual Athens not so tuned or precise, but I would still say, so generally I would say that I encounter more open people or more for people for whom I can truly pray. It is not the case that then everyone makes a decision for Jesus, but that I can pray for people or at least share the Gospel. So I actually come to that point more often than I don’t get to it. Yes, I also believe, right, in Romans 1 verse 16 it says, this is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. So this power is in the Gospel. And therefore I always rejoice when I can share the full Gospel, because I know, something happens in people’s hearts towards, which only God can do. Now you have at some point started going out onto the street and talking to people about Jesus. What was your biggest fear at the beginning? Or speaking from my perspective, I no longer approach people on the street to ask for directions. I find it much braver to then ask them, hey, may I briefly talk with you about faith or whatever? What was your fear? Or did you have any fear at all, or is it an overcoming for you, or how is it like? Yes, so if I really recall the first outreach after K, that was in Cologne, there were so many people, so there were thousands of people and I really took about 20 minutes, crowds of people came towards me, that I stopped. And if I now recall, then that was I think a moment of certain rejection. They don’t want to hear anything from me anyway and maybe also some shame, which then somehow wanted to creep in, so then you stand there and maybe you say something wrong, maybe you cannot answer the question and then feel ashamed or so and do not feel so, uh, how do you say it, so sufficiently equipped. Yes, that took me a very long time until I approached someone and I also think this I didn’t know at all, I couldn’t really hear, it was all so loud and I didn’t know at all, who is now really the person that God somehow prepared, whom I should approach and that I really had to learn and that was, I think, first the fear, am I doing something wrong? Can I somehow not answer something, yes, do people want to talk with me, will they reject me. That was probably these first feelings. Yes. And is it still an overcoming now or is it now, let’s say it a matter that decreases with training? Do you experience that? So it is much also, I say, what we Christians have under the term fear of people, right? How do people judge me? What might they think about me? How do they react to me, to my message? Uh, how are you doing with that today? Yes, so I would say, today I really have much much much less fear. So, that is really training once, I believe, definitely, that you simply go out onto the street. That is why I encourage everyone at least once a month. We do that here at our ICF Mannheim to go on outreach, to overcome this fear, because then you are directly with a brother, a sister on the way, you are not alone, you are not thrown directly into this cold water, that you stand alone in the Lidl and God says, here speak to the person and you train in that. And the other is, I have actually also experienced freedom regarding the topic of fear of people. So, I really noticed, that was a topic, that was broken in my life and after that I felt a greater freedom really, uh, and such a new courage. Mm. But I would actually say, now through regularly approaching people, that also helps to remain free, because I know it myself from my life, when I somehow become comfortable, when I don’t approach people, when I am so focused on my business, I became a mother ten months ago and then I was naturally very occupied with my baby, then I shared the Gospel less and then it was a bigger overcoming to go out again or to approach people, when God gives this impulse to follow, when God has already given you, Jessie, that is a person and really after exactly that, was it really God now and the person walks away, ah maybe maybe not and afterwards I always regretted it and then I knew I don’t want that, yes but you can switch it off faster. Now I know you were not only on such an evangelism training week but you also did an evangelism school over several months. What did you, if you could pick one thing, what did you learn there about sharing the Gospel with people? Mhm. Yes. Uh, the very first thing that we directly came to was how important, important, important it is to first be filled by God, because the Bible says, you know, from the fullness of your heart your mouth speaks. That is what you live. And I had already learned that in my church or I knew how important it is to spend time with Jesus, uh, to have time with God in the morning. But there it was, that was also somehow included in the schedule and I really noticed, even on days where I personally would not have done it, because I was tired or something else, we had this set-aside or this time with God, which we simply had every morning at home in class or before class and only because of that, I believe, did I become braver, could I overcome it more, because I really experienced this, this truly full, this fullness, this fullness. Then this glass is filled full and, uh, it overflows and this overflow, that is what God says, that is what is passed on. You do not have to drink your glass empty to the bottom and then walk around empty, but you should be full, uh, overflowing or however one should say it. Uh and then you should pass it on. So that is what I learned. This being full of Jesus, only then can I also evangelize with this love of God, because it is super natural. You cannot love every person on the street. Yes, we probably all know that we sometimes think, oh no, I do not want to talk to that person now or something like that. But when God gives you a heart for someone, then it is super natural. Yes. Yes. Now I have you, as we have known each other for a while and I find that you have always been a person who simply had a passion for Jesus and also about it, whether it was at work or in a circle of friends, simply talking about it, but I find now from my perspective, these trainings, that has sharpened it, as if God, so to speak, sharpened you as a weapon, so to speak. Uh, you have received words, you also have tactics, uh, approaches, how do I address people, how do I lead them into decision, how does a prayer of surrender work, what is that, what is important? You have all that, it is also craft tools, it is also training. And I find that it has, so that is something that one can also learn. Do you now find it the task of every Christian to go out onto the street and simply talk to strangers about their faith? Uh yes, uh Jesus himself says: "Go out, proclaim the Gospel." Right, uh baptize them in my name and teach them to keep my commandments. And I believe, it is the task of everyone. I believe, for everyone it can already look different, that where one is placed, yes, maybe you are a business woman, businessman and you are a lot in the working world and God wants to use you exactly there or yes, you drive a lot in the Tram, then God will certainly use this time so that you can feel free to tell people about Jesus while on the tram. I believe it looks different for everyone. The others have a lot to do with family, I don’t know, waves of illness or something, which connects them very, very differently with their family, and they should simply bring Jesus into that. I believe that. But I also believe that acquiring this skill, um, is, if you do it regularly with other Christians, simply going out onto the street. That is the simplest playing field, practice field, to say, simply approaching people, because personally I find it sometimes harder to talk to people about Jesus at home, um, than on the street, where people are simply open, because at home they perhaps already think about every part, and there they also see you from a different side, right, where you perhaps don’t shine, because you might sometimes be absent. You miss the mark, because we are also only human. Yes, we do not live a perfect life, and on the street one only sees a part of us, and at home they say: "Yes, yes, you also still love so-and-so, or you still do this and that." Yes, that is a process, right? God changes us. But therefore I believe, that is where you are placed. Proclaim the Gospel, so, as God made you. Um, and let yourself be equipped, when you come to us and in Mannheim, um, simply go out onto the street, and then your greater ease is for you. Cool. Thank you very much, Jessie. I have one more question to conclude. Now I know, you do not only have a huge heart for telling people about Jesus, who probably do not yet know him, but also a huge passion for it not perhaps remaining at such a prayer of an encounter on the street, but accompanying people into discipleship, into their relationship with faith, um. Why is that so important to you, and how does it look, or say so, one more sentence to conclude, now someone on the street perhaps makes a decision? How do you continue with the people? How does it look? What happens then? Mhm. Yes, so I always stay in contact with them, I exchange contact with the auto, so simply numbers, and then I get in touch with them, I tell them on the street already, what they can expect, ah, that I will contact them, because it is a decision, ah, that they have made, that they want to follow Jesus, and there I simply want to help them further on the way, and then we stay in contact, so very organically, I would say, I invite them into my small group, I invite them to come to church. Sometimes one has to go out of the way, extra mile, to pick up the person, perhaps order a taxi for them, so that they come. Today we took Brian along, and I believe, that is it, that one sometimes people, especially at the beginning, these first steps, like when I am teaching my daughter to walk right now, I have to hold her hands, yes, and this holding of hands is, I believe, for me an image of discipleship, until they can walk on their own, until they are connected, until they, ah, notice, this part of this of this family, they have arrived at Jesus, and then they can walk, then then one is still there, right? But so this holding of the first steps, accompanying, walking with them, um, simply naturally staying in contact. Yes, cool. Thank you very much for sharing, Jessie. I find it so beautiful, we have experienced in this church so often, how people through you, through your effort on the street, have found Jesus, become part of the church, walked these steps in faith with you, and then have let themselves be baptized. Therefore, many, many heartfelt thanks for what you carry. Feel encouraged, feel challenged, but also to step into it yourself and to grow. A very heartfelt invitation to our Offered here at ECF Mannheim. And otherwise, feel free to write in the comments what challenges you or what you experience when you are in conversation with people about faith? And I say thank you very much for watching, for tuning in. If you like, we will see each other again next week. Until then. Bye. Bye. Goodbye.

Ja, also ganz unterschiedlich tatsächlich. Mhm. Was war so deine Angst? Mhm. Ja. Was passiert dann? Mhm. Ciao. Ciao. Tschüss.
