The parish is the concrete presence of the Church in the midst of the people, lived through the community of the baptized and their three missions – proclamation, worship, and witness.

The parish that is the Church, present in a concrete way in the midst of the people, formed not only by the temple but above all by the community of the baptized, who believe and bear witness to the faith.

The text reports on the solemn establishment of the new parish of Santo Antônio de Pádua in the Parque Nações Unidas in the northwest of São Paulo. The parish was established on the 15th in a Mass presided over by Archbishop Odilo Pedro Scherer and taken over by the Theatine Fathers. The first parish priest, Father Douglas Eurenides Modesto, was installed in his office within the framework of the rite. The parish arose from a process that began in 2021 with a pastoral district and was elevated to a quasi-parish in 2024. In his homily, the Archbishop emphasized the three missions of every parish: proclamation, worship, and witness to the faith. The community has in recent years structured sacramental pastoral areas and renovated the main church. The faithful report a growing identification with the parish and increasing participation of young people.

“Do you welcome the creation of the Parish?” After the long-awaited question from Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, the assembly of the faithful responded in unison with a “Yes!” and applause echoed through the main church of the new Parish of Saint Anthony of Padua, in the Parque Nações Unidas, in the Northwest zone, erected in a solemn Mass on the night of Saturday, the 15th, presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop. Carved out from the territory of the Parishes of Our Lady Mother and Queen and Our Lady of the Conception, the new Parish is the fruit of a process initiated in November 2021 with the creation of a pastoral area, elevated to a quasi-parish in August 2024, and which brought together the current main church and the Communities of Our Lady of Peace, Saint Joseph, Saint the Apostle Paul, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, under the care of the Order of Regular Clerics (CR), the Teatine Fathers. “The dream of creating the Parish is born first in the heart of God, and it meets the hearts of people, of our communities, and then it reaches us, the Teatine Fathers, particularly me. It is a dream realized by many hands, but those hands would not be able to, nor will they, without a praying hope, trusting in divine providence,” stated Father Douglas Eurenides Modesto, CR, who took office as the first Parish Priest, speaking to O SÃO PAULO. The decrees for the creation of the Parish and the appointment of the Parish Priest were read by Bishop Carlos Silva, OFMCap., Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese in the Brasilândia Region, who also thanked the efforts of all pastoral agents and priests who were part of the history of this community. During the Mass, the Archbishop led the rite of taking office of the first Parish Priest: Father Douglas made the profession of faith, received the book of the Holy Gospels, and renewed his priestly promises. Bishop Odilo also handed him the keys to the church and the tabernacle, the purple stole to minister the Sacrament of Penance, and the oil of Baptism, in addition to inviting him to sit in the presidential chair. In the last two years, the main church underwent improvements, such as the painting of its interior, the complete composition of the presbytery, including the niches for the images of Saint Anthony and Saint Cajetan (founder of the Teatine Fathers), the cross, and the tabernacle, as well as illustrations of the stations of the Via Crucis on the side walls. “The beauty of the temple is in itself catechetical. There is no way to speak of liturgy, of spirituality, and of the transcendent without beauty,” emphasized Father Douglas. At the top of the main entrance, there is an image of Saint Anthony (1195-1231), and at the back of the temple stands out a huge cross, helping to externally communicate the Catholic faith and devotion to the Saint, which also refers to the origin of this church: the land on which it is built was donated in 1992 by Mr. Stepan Engel on the condition that a chapel to Saint Anthony be built. Between 2014 and 2018, the current church was built. During the homily, Bishop Odilo emphasized that the parish is the Church present in a concrete way among the people, formed not only by the temple, but especially by the community of the baptized who believe and who bear witness to the faith. The Archbishop highlighted the three missions of every parish: to care for the faith of the people, through the proclamation of the Word, formations, and a permanent catechetical process; to worship God, celebrating the faith so that people may sanctify themselves; and to bear witness to the faith through good works and the life of the faithful in a manner consistent with the Gospel. Bishop Odilo also exhorted the parish community to follow the example of Saint Anthony of Padua, who bore witness to love for Jesus, was a great preacher of the Word of God, a missionary, a penitent, and a man of charity, with special attention to the poorest. Since they assumed the Santo Antônio de Pádua Pastoral Area in 2021, the Teatine Fathers have structured the sacramental pastorates, the Tithe, and movements such as the Vincentians and the Schoenstatt Missionaries, who bring the little chapels of the Mother and Queen to homes. Father Douglas also visits the elderly and the sick in their homes for Confessions and to administer to them the Anointing of the Sick. The Parish Priest highlighted that a sense of integral pastoral care has advanced among the faithful, something also perceived by Marina Oliveira de Souza, a member of the parish economic council. “Sunday Masses are super full and people want to participate in the activities. The ‘almost parish’ phase left them with that thing of ‘let’s go, let’s become a parish, let’s get rid of that ‘almost’!’. Everyone wanted to help more, they embraced what was being proposed,” she recalled, also highlighting the greater consistency of altar servers and acolytes in the service at the altar, although the challenge of having more young people in the Parish remains. Attracting the youth is also the expectation of Erika Fiais de Almeida, a member of the parish economic council and an extraordinary minister of the Holy Communion: “Before, the vast majority of the laity were ‘white-haired’, but today we already notice quite a few young people. In the Masses, the Father speaks a lot about current events, the internet, about how to share the things of faith, and this is very attractive for the young people, besides seeing here the love for Jesus and the care for the Eucharist”. Father Douglas assures that more and more people have perceived the presence of the Church in their realities: “We have a greater proximity not only with those who participate in our communities, but with the residents of the neighborhood. It is no longer a parish that is far away, and this leads people to have greater identification with it”. In the final part of the Mass, Father Douglas thanked Bishop Odilo and Bishop Carlos Silva for their support in the community’s journey of faith, as well as to the laity – living or already deceased – who helped make the creation of the Parish possible. He also emphasized that, looking at the life of Our Lady, he understands that his office as Parish Priest must be exercised “with listening, attention, understanding, patience, availability and, above all, humility”; and that the Parish “must have great care for sacramental and pastoral life, being a place of abundance of gifts, charisms and talents placed at the service of God and of the brothers”. Father Rafael Tadeu Machado, CR, Provincial Preposit of the Paul VI Province of Brazil, of the Order of Regular Clerics, thanked the Archbishop for entrusting the Teatine Fathers – present in Brazil for 75 years – with the pastoral care of this Parish. Bishop Odilo, in turn, expressed his gratitude to them for their availability to take on parishes in missionary realities in the peripheries of São Paulo.
