The bells of 14 churches in East Malawi rang with notes of joy in sync with the arrival of His Holiness Pope “Com Maria”.
His Holiness the Pope: Egypt possesses the book of human civilization, and the Com Maria project is a new page in the pages of Egyptian Christian civilization.
The Governor of Minya: “Love for the homeland continues through our cohesion as citizens, and the visit of His Holiness the Pope to the governorate gives us all positive energy.”
His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, together with Lieutenant General Emad Kadawani, Governor of Minya, inaugurated this Tuesday evening the first phase of the Com Maria project, one of the stations on the path of the Holy Family, in the village of Deir El Barsha in Malawi, within the framework of His Holiness’s tour of the Diocese of Malawi, Ansnah, and Ashmunain, which he began today.
The bells of the churches in the East Malawi area, numbering 14, rang with notes of joy in sync with the arrival of His Holiness Pope Com Maria, welcoming His Holiness.
A ceremony was held on the occasion of the inauguration, attended by the Deputy Governor, representatives of the Engineering Organization of the Armed Forces, security leaders, representatives of the Endowments, and members of parliament, along with a large number of the people of the village of Barsha.
Several words of love and welcome were delivered by His Beatitude Bishop Demetrius and His Beatitude Bishop Yohannes, Bishop of Asyut and Secretary of the Holy Synod, Dr. Omar Khalifa, Assistant Minister of Endowments, and Engineer Nagi on behalf of the project engineers. Then, Lieutenant General Emad Kadawani, Governor of Minya, spoke, welcoming the visit and meeting with His Holiness the Pope, praising the church’s national role and its roles in serving the sons of the homeland. He called for the importance of preserving the spirit of love that distinguishes Egyptians, affirming that love for the homeland continues through our cohesion as citizens, and clarified that the visit of His Holiness the Pope to the governorate gives positive energy to everyone and encourages them to work harder and exert more effort.
For his part, His Holiness the Pope said in his address: “I welcome you all, dear ones, on this blessed evening. I welcome the Honorable Minister, Governor Emad Kadawani, Governor of Minya, and I am extremely happy to visit Minya Governorate and to visit this precious and dear part of the Diocese of Malawi and all its dependencies. I welcome all executive, legislative, religious, security, and military leaders, and all attendees. I also welcome the Metropolitan Bishops, Bishops, and Priests. I welcome you all on this beautiful occasion in this blessed spot, which will one day become a prominent landmark in Egypt.
Egypt, our country under whose umbrella we all gather, has been described by history as a natural anomaly. Dr. Gamal Hamdan, in his book “The Personality of Egypt,” described this country and said, ‘Egypt is a natural anomaly,’ because this homeland has not been divided throughout history. This homeland’s father is history and its mother is geography, and therefore we are very fortunate to be born on the land of our country, Egypt.
We call Egypt ‘the Mother of the World,’ ‘the Heart of the World,’ and ‘the Safe Guardian Country,’ but how beautiful it is that in Egypt we live the Egyptian civilization. Civilization is for a person to be civilized and to have noble principles and values. We live in a country that possesses civilization, and this is an important matter of great value.
In Egypt, we possess the book of civilization, which contains Pharaonic, Christian, and Islamic pages, and we add to these pages every day. When the President inaugurated the Grand Egyptian Museum, it was as if he were writing a new page in the book of Pharaonic civilization.
This dream, ‘Com Maria,’ which was in the mind and heart of His Beatitude Bishop Demetrius, and at the right time God gave it this beautiful beginning, is an addition to a new page in the pages of Christian civilization. This addition extends since the visit of the Holy Family. We say that most countries of the world had Christianity enter them, but Egypt was entered by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Therefore, in Egypt, there is a special blessing present in its land and its people.
In the chapter of Islamic civilization, our country cares for many additions in Old Cairo and Islamic Cairo, where many renovations and additions are being made.
Thus, Egypt is the owner of the constantly renewing book of civilization, and it is an important sign for all of us that Egypt is not an ordinary country, because it carries, possesses, and takes pride in the book of human civilization. Therefore, we find the peoples of the world around us looking at us with a great and beautiful gaze. Egypt is the only country that has a science named after it, ‘Egyptology,’ which is a major science taught in universities.
I thank the Honorable Minister, the Governor, for his interest and for removing all difficulties, not only in the Diocese of Malawi but in many other places. His Excellency the Governor is an enlightened and aware personality who knows the nature of his work well. He is responsible for all Egyptians in the governorate’s jurisdiction, exactly as His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi does, stating that he is responsible for all Egyptians and constantly calling for all Egyptians to be one hand.”
I am happy to be with you on this occasion, which marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese of Minya and the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the episcopate of His Excellency the Most Reverend Bishop Anba Demetrius. May God grant him good health and a long life, and may we rejoice and come to witness the completion of this beautiful work.
I thank the noble people of Minya and the great people of Minya. I am happy to meet with you and to listen to the kind and beautiful words we have heard, which contain history, good feelings, and wise leadership. May God bless your lives and protect you, and may we always meet in goodness.
After the ceremony, His Holiness the Pope, accompanied by the Governor, unveiled the commemorative plaque marking the inauguration of the first phase of the Kom Maria project.
The journey of the Holy Family in Minya is associated with four main historical sites, namely: Ashmunayn, Dairut (Umm Nakhla), the Well of the Cloud in Ansina, and Kom Maria at the Monastery of Abu Hanes. Kom Maria is an elevated mound at the foot of the eastern mountain near the Church of the Virgin Mary at the Monastery of Abu Hanes. The Holy Family rested there during their journey in the land of Egypt. Church celebrations are held there, namely: the 3rd of Tobi (the commemoration of the martyrdom of the children of Bethlehem, which is the time when the journey of the Holy Family began), the 24th of Bishans (the Feast of the Lord Jesus entering the land of Egypt), and the 21st of Baouna (the Feast of the Virgin Mary in the state of iron). His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has approved the establishment of a tourism project in Kom Maria and has directed the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces to supervise the construction works. The project is being carried out at the expense of the Diocese of Minya.
