Humanitarian aid is a spiritual duty in Islam, which is blessed through connection to one's own faith community and to the Caliphate, and should be strategically oriented toward sustainable, local infrastructure.

Loving humanity and showing compassion to others is an immense form of worship of God Almighty and an excellent means of attaining His pleasure and His rewards.

The text honors the 30th anniversary of the humanitarian organization Humanity First and emphasizes that its service to humanity is based on Islamic teachings, the example of the Prophet, and the statements of the Promised Messiah. The speaker calls on those present to maintain their connection to the Ahmadiyya community and to the Caliphate, as this is considered a source of divine blessing. He describes the growth from humble beginnings to a multi-million budget and refers to concrete projects such as hospitals in Guatemala and Côte d'Ivoire. For the future, he recommends building smaller clinics in order to increase reach. The text makes clear that the service should be done solely for the sake of Allah and not for worldly fame. It encourages the listeners to regard their work as a sacred duty and to act in gratitude for the achievements to date.

* Please note that this transcript may not be reproduced on other websites or in printed form without explicit permission. After the recitation of Tashahhud, Taʿawwuz, and Bismillah, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad (aba), the worldwide head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and the Fifth Caliph of the Promised Messiah (as), said: "Today, by the grace of Allah, you have gathered not only to commemorate and celebrate the 30th anniversary of Humanity First, but – what is even more important – to express your profound gratitude to Allah the Almighty and to renew your pledge to serve humanity. I sincerely hope that every person present has participated in this conference with this spirit and this intention. The Vision Behind Humanity First Humanity First was established by Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih IV (rh) with the far-sighted vision that an independent humanitarian organization should be brought into being to advance the efforts of the Jamaat in the service of humanity, particularly in situations where the Jamaat could not intervene directly. Therefore, you must never lose sight of the noble purpose for which Humanity First was founded. The Islamic Teaching on the Service of Humanity – as Expounded by the Promised Messiah (as) Undoubtedly, a core objective of the advent of the Promised Messiah (as) was to bring to his followers the true service of humanity. He repeatedly emphasized the necessity of helping those in need. Thus, for example, on one occasion the Promised Messiah (as) said: "All of you who feel yourselves to belong to me must show true compassion to all people, regardless of their religion. You must show kindness to everyone without discrimination, for this is the teaching of the Holy Quran." [1] As Allah the Almighty says: "And they give food, out of love for Him, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive." (Chapter 76, Verse 9) In his explanation of this Quranic verse, the Promised Messiah (as) explained that a true believer does not only help his own people but serves all people in need. Although prisoners and captives were often disbelievers, Allah the Almighty directed the Muslims to uphold their rights and meet their needs to the greatest extent possible. In this light, the Promised Messiah (as) further said: "See, therefore, the unprecedented extent of the compassion of Islam for all people. In my view, the perfect moral teaching was therefore granted exclusively to Islam." [2] The service of humanity is thus a fundamental teaching of the Holy Quran. Moreover, the Holy Prophet (saw) lived this teaching throughout his life. His heart was always filled with the desire to help and assist all impoverished and vulnerable people, regardless of whether they were Muslims, Christians, Jews, disbelievers, or followers of another faith. To revive and uphold the principle of selfless service to humanity in this era, Allah the Almighty sent the Promised Messiah (as). And it was precisely to promote this objective that Humanity First was founded. Consequently, every Ahmadi who has joined the Promised Messiah (as) must regard it as a sacred duty to embody these benevolent teachings and to tirelessly strive to alleviate human suffering. Regarding this duty, the Promised Messiah (as) says: "In fact, the most difficult and delicate stage concerns the rights of fellow human beings, for one has to deal with them at all times and one is exposed to this trial at every moment." He says: "Therefore, one should proceed very carefully and be mindful when taking a step in this regard." [3] The Promised Messiah (as) continues: "To love humanity and to show compassion to others is an immense form of the worship of God Almighty and an excellent means of attaining His pleasure and His rewards." [4] On another occasion, the Promised Messiah (as) elaborated on this further. He said: "Allah the Almighty repeatedly commands that you should show love and compassion to all people regardless of religion or ethnic affiliation. Allah commands us to feed the hungry, to free those in bonds, to settle the arrears of those who are deeply in debt, to bear the burdens of others, and to truly fulfil the duties towards humanity." [5] A humanitarian mission rooted in faith These teachings are all rooted in the Holy Quran and found their perfect expression and manifestation through the life and character of the Holy Prophet (saw). Therefore, do not consider Humanity First to be merely another charitable organisation or aid agency. Rather, its mission is directly based on the commands of Allah, the blessed practice of the Holy Prophet (saw), and the teachings of the Promised Messiah (as). In contrast to secular organisations, Humanity First does not serve humanity in order to gain fame or recognition. Rather, every act of service springs purely from devotion to Allah the Almighty and is inspired by His command to tend to the wounds of His creation. Maintaining the spiritual identity of Humanity First Also always remember: if Humanity First does not remain firmly connected to and aligned with the Jamaat, it will not be distinguished from any other charitable or aid organisation. A few years ago, some leaders and Humanity First formed the opinion that Humanity First was completely independent of the Jamaat. The reality is and will always be that the direct connection of Humanity First with the Jamaat is a source of divine blessing and a reason for pride and honour for it. Accordingly, you should never abandon or sever your connection to the Jamaat of the Promised Messiah (as), for our goal is one and the same: to serve humanity without distinction of caste, faith, or colour. As I have already mentioned, Humanity First was founded for this reason by Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih IV (rh). So have no doubt about this: as long as you maintain this connection, value your belonging to the Jamaat, and continue to seek the guidance and direction of the Khilafat, your work and your efforts will continue to be blessed, insha'Allah. 30 years of growth and divine blessing As for the milestone itself, Humanity First has undoubtedly, by the grace of Allah, made leaps and bounds in the past 30 years from very modest and simple beginnings. Initially, the total budget of Humanity First was barely a few thousand pounds or dollars. Or at most, after some time, a few hundred thousand pounds. Therefore, the first projects were very small in scale and extremely limited in scope. But today, three decades later, Humanity First has reached a level at which the annual budget now runs into the millions. In fact, some national budgets of Humanity First have reached millions of pounds or dollars. This is solely due to the grace and mercy of Allah. At the same time, the budget and resources of Humanity First remain far behind those of many other humanitarian organisations. Nevertheless, you are all witnesses to how Allah the Almighty has blessed the work and efforts of Humanity First manifold. This is because the sole objective of those who serve therein is to attain the proximity and reward of Allah and to be the inheritors of the prayers of the Holy Prophet (saw) and the Promised Messiah (as). In fact, often much larger and better-known charitable organizations turn to Humanity First and ask how we achieve such great goals. Or they ask how we gain access to certain places that they, despite their budgets in the millions and enormous resources, have not been able to obtain. Always remember that each of your successes flows directly from the boundless grace of Allah the Almighty, and because you are supported by the prayers of the Caliph of the Time and millions of Ahmadis around the world. As long as Humanity First continues to seek and follow the guidance of the Khilafat and works with the sincere desire to serve others solely for the sake of Allah, it will continue to flourish and progress. The globally growing projects of Humanity First From the reports sent to me by the Chairman of Humanity First International, it is evident that Humanity First is now active in many different areas of service, including healthcare, education, and other humanitarian fields. For example, the disaster relief teams have served with immense courage and dedication in some of the most challenging environments in the world. Furthermore, long-term projects such as the establishment of hospitals, schools, and orphanages, as well as the provision of clean water and sanitation in remote areas, have achieved outstanding and life-changing results. All countries of Humanity First have contributed to these efforts, with the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, and the United States having made particularly significant contributions over the years. Building sustainable medical and social infrastructure In 2018, Humanity First established a state-of-the-art hospital in Guatemala, which has since been expanded. In addition, another major hospital project in Côte d'Ivoire is nearing completion. Yet far more important than the physical structures of brick and steel are the compassionate hearts that serve within them – the doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers. While I am sure that you will equip the new hospital with excellent facilities, the doctors and staff must therefore not only be professionally competent but also feel a deeply felt commitment to serving humanity and alleviating human suffering. I assume that the care, compassion, and dedication that patients experience in our hospitals and clinics are certainly unsurpassed. Should I be wrong and that is not always the case, then the management of Humanity First should address this immediately. The actual large hospital projects each cost millions of dollars – I estimate – but Humanity First does not have the resources to build such facilities everywhere. Therefore, you should strategically deploy your resources in the future so that the impact is maximized. Focus on building smaller hospitals or even clinics with eight to ten beds. Such facilities can be built at a fraction of the cost compared to large hospitals. This strategy ensures a broader reach in local communities. Patients gain access to essential primary care locally and can be referred to larger facilities for advanced treatments when needed. For example, in Côte d'Ivoire, local clinics can be established within reach of the new hospital, offering basic services and primary care. If necessary, patients can be referred to the main hospital. Therefore, do not think that it would be a step backward to build smaller hospitals or clinics now, simply because you have built two very large hospitals. At the Jamaat level, we have built inpatient medical facilities with five to ten beds that provide high-quality care to local communities, and we have received very positive feedback. In developing countries, human lives are often lost because patients do not have access to such basic services or primary care. I therefore reaffirm that Humanity First should strive to build such clinics or smaller hospitals in various countries. With the grace of Allah, Humanity First is carrying out many other outstanding programs. For example, Humanity First Germany has established orphanages in Africa that provide loving care and support to many vulnerable children. In addition, Humanity First has been running eye clinics and camps for several years as part of the "Gift of Sight" programs, through which thousands of people have regained their sight or had their vision improved. Beyond these critical ongoing programs, the mission of Humanity First also requires immediate mobilization to meet the urgent and often unexpected needs of the time. Extraordinary Effort in Times of Crisis Thus, with the grace and mercy of Allah, Humanity First UK has rendered outstanding and devoted services in the last two years in response to the devastating and horrific situation in Gaza, and has resolutely faced some of the most terrible and dangerous conditions. In reality, it is the local team of Humanity First on the ground in Gaza that particularly deserves our thanks and prayers. With remarkable courage and dignity, and without regard for their own comfort or safety, they have selflessly served the local population. They were driven solely by the deep desire to demonstrate the mercy and compassion that lie at the heart of Islamic teachings. May Allah the Almighty reward them and keep them all in His protection. In the course of the conflict, I have personally seen some members of the Humanity First team in Gaza become physically weakened. They sacrifice their own well-being and health for the sake of others. Nevertheless, they have not wavered or shirked their responsibility even once. As a result, they have provided thousands of people in desperate need with food, water, supplies, and other protective measures. Every penny that Humanity First has spent in Gaza has reached the people on the ground and brought them much-needed comfort and relief. In fact, other well-known aid organizations and charitable bodies have praised the efforts of Humanity First, and I am sure that the relevant UN agencies will also bear witness to this, if they are fair and honest. As for Humanity First UK, the women's team works with great dedication and passion – Masha'Allah. They have done outstanding work in recent years. I am sure that the women serving with Humanity First in other countries also work with great dedication. May Allah bless them all and enable them to further increase their services in the future. Maintaining the True Spirit of Service to Humanity Therefore, there is no doubt that the scope of Humanity First's work around the world will, with the grace of Allah, certainly continue to grow. As I said, the budget that once was in the thousands has now reached millions. And one day it will, if Allah wills, reach billions. Regardless of finances, however, it is essential that all members of Humanity First always show an unwavering passion and commitment to serving others. Service to humanity is not a fleeting goal that comes and goes like the wind. Rather, it is a lifelong challenge that requires consistency and unwavering steadfastness. It should not be the case that you work for a few days and then become tired or move on to something else. Furthermore, you must seek the help of Allah at every step. Your entire work should be carried out with humility and prayers. You should not seek worldly applause or praise. Your only motivation should rather be to attain the love, the nearness, and the reward of Allah the Almighty, and to have the desire to fulfill the commands of the Holy Prophet (saw) and the teachings of the Promised Messiah (as). Since you have now reached 30 years of auxiliary service, do not rest on your laurels and do not lean back in satisfaction. Instead, always look forward. Now is the time to plan for the next three decades. Now is the time to develop a clear vision for the future and to set ambitious goals. Now is the time to take Humanity First to the next level. Your goal should be that the humanitarian services of Humanity First in the coming years increase not only gradually but exponentially. Only then will this milestone and this commemoration have real value. Preparation for future challenges in an unstable world Before I come to my conclusion, I would also like to mention the uncertainty and instability of today's world. It is no exaggeration to say that the global economic and political situation is becoming increasingly uncertain. Conflicts are breaking out all over the world. I have often said that I fear we are coming closer and closer to a catastrophic world war. And when such a war breaks out, resources will be scarce. Money or valuables will be of little value. Therefore, Humanity First should create a comprehensive plan for how it can operate and provide help to people in war zones and affected regions. While your disaster relief teams have some experience in responding to earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and other natural disasters, the impact of a world war would be of an entirely different magnitude. It would present an unprecedented, precarious, and complex challenge like you have never experienced in the past. In fact, it is even possible that employees of Humanity First may lose their lives or suffer serious injuries in the course of their duties. You must therefore plan meticulously and rigorously train your teams so that they are as well prepared as possible. You should identify the specific areas in which you can help, as it will not be possible for Humanity First to cover every area. Your priority should continue to be to save lives and alleviate suffering. I know that some emergency planning has already been done, but this should be reviewed and further developed. Remember: In times of deep crises, selfish people try to protect themselves and their own interests. But as members of Humanity First, you must always put your own interests and needs aside for the benefit of others. With these words, I pray that Allah the Almighty may accept and reward every sincere contribution, every sacrifice, and every act of service that Humanity First has rendered in the last 30 years. May all members of Humanity First, wherever they may be, serve with ever greater distinction and dedication. And may Humanity First always live up to the noble aspiration with which it was founded. And may Allah the Almighty enable Humanity First to shine as a beacon of hope and mercy for generations to come, Ameen. ________________ FOOTNOTES 1.
