The Hearts Find Rest Only Through the Remembrance of Allah

DITIB Religionsamt · DITIB · 2026-08-28 · Köln · Source

Community · carrying Gratitude

True spiritual peace and the vitality of the heart are attainable exclusively through the constant spiritual connection to Allah by means of remembrance (Zikr), while worldly comforts offer only transient consolation.

They are those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

The sermon addresses the need for spiritual nourishment of the soul and argues that true rest is attained only through the remembrance of Allah (Zikr). Transient worldly goods such as wealth or status are presented as insufficient for inner peace. The text defines Zikr as a deep connection of the heart with God that goes beyond mere lip movements. By way of the Prophet Muhammad, constant devotion in everyday life is illustrated. Communal remembrance is described as a means that strengthens the community and brings about divine mercy. The believers are called upon to fill their homes, workplaces, and mosques with remembrance and not to neglect the ritual prayers and the recitation of the Quran. A heart that forgets God is described as spiritually dead, while a heart that remembers is considered alive. The sermon concludes with the call to utter the prescribed formulas of devotion in times of joy and sorrow.

Hearts find rest only through the remembrance of Allah (28.08.2026) Dear Believers! Human beings have, in addition to their physical aspect, a spiritual side. Just as our body depends on food, our soul and our heart also require spiritual nourishment. Even if humans often seek inner peace in transient desires, in possessions, wealth, or status, it is evident that none of these can ultimately grant true peace. Allah explains the path to it to us as follows: “They are those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily, through the remembrance of Allah, hearts find rest.”1 Dear Muslims! Zikr means to remember Allah, not to forget Him, and to always preserve His Majesty in the heart. Zikr does not merely mean that the tongue moves, but also that the heart is connected with Allah. It is the most beautiful expression of love and connection with the Creator of the universe. The pinnacle of this love and connection is our Prophet (s). He spent every moment of his life in the remembrance of Allah;2 while walking, sitting, lying down, and also while standing up. Therefore, zikr is a consciousness of servitude that is spread throughout the entire life. Honored Believers! Constantly remembering Allah strengthens the human connection to Allah and also brings believers together in the same atmosphere of peace and love. Our beloved Prophet (s) valued gatherings of Zikr and explained their virtues with the following words: “The angels surround those who sit together to remember Allah. Mercy covers them, inner tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him.”3 Dear Brothers and Sisters! Let us always remember Allah with our tongues and hearts, in joy and sorrow, in prosperity and hardship, so that He too may remember us with His mercy. Let us adorn our homes, workplaces, and mosques with the remembrance of Allah. Let us not neglect our ritual prayers, which are the greatest Zikr. Let us read, understand, and implement in our lives the Quran, which is also called “Zikr.” Let us not forget: A heart that remembers Allah is alive; a heart that forgets Allah is spiritually dead.4 I conclude my sermon with the following beautiful Zikr, which our Prophet (s) taught us to attain the blessings of Paradise: “Subhanallahi wel-hamdu lillahi we la ilahe illallahu wallahu ekber.”5 Allah is exalted from all defects. All praise belongs to Allah. There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.
