The pursuit of religious knowledge is the obligation of every Muslim, because without it neither true faith nor correct action is possible, and the spread of ignorance is a sign of the Last Hour.

The pursuit of knowledge is the obligation of every Muslim, male and female!

The text is an Islamic sermon (khutbah) on the central importance of knowledge for faith and religious practice. It argues that without knowledge, neither true faith nor correct action is possible, and relies on Quranic verses and hadiths. Ignorance is presented as forbidden, and the pursuit of knowledge as the obligation of every Muslim. It warns that deeds are nullified by ignorance and that the ignorant can become false guides. The text calls for learning from competent scholars and for expanding one's own knowledge throughout life. At the end, a hadith on the signs of the Last Hour is quoted, which names the loss of knowledge and the spread of ignorance as signs of the end times. No concrete reference to the present is made.

02.10.2026 "The Importance of Knowledge" Believers! Knowledge is one of the most precious things that the Exalted Allah has given to His servants. It is a light in the darkness, a source that never runs dry, and a guide that leads one to the truth. Without knowledge, there is no faith. For one cannot love what one does not know, nor act upon something one does not understand. Our Exalted Lord says in the Noble Quran: "Say: 'Are those who know and those who do not know equal?' But only people of understanding will be mindful." (Zumar, 9) And our Prophet (Sallallahu aleyhi we sellem) said: "The sin of the knowledgeable person counts as one sin. The sin of the ignorant person counts as two sins!" And when he was asked about that: "Why is that so, O Messenger of Allah?", he answered: "The knowledgeable person is punished for committing a sin. The ignorant person, however, is punished for committing a sin and for having neglected to learn the corresponding knowledge (that would have protected him from this sin)." (Daylami) Beloved brothers! This-worldly and otherworldly happiness can only be achieved with the help of knowledge. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu aleyhi we sellem) emphasized the high significance of knowledge with the following words: "Seeking knowledge is the obligation of every Muslim man and every Muslim woman!" (Ibn Majah) And so one must learn the corresponding knowledge that one needs for the fulfillment of an obligation before one fulfills that obligation. How many deeds are nullified by ignorance! Therefore, our religion has forbidden ignorance and made knowledge obligatory. Our scholars said: "Knowledge without action is a sin. Action without knowledge, however, leads people astray and makes them a plaything of Shaytan." Beloved congregation! The first command of our Lord was: "Read!" In the following verse, He forbade us ignorance: "Do not be of the ignorant ones!" (Al-An'am, 35) And with the following parable, He commanded us to reflect: "Say: 'Are the blind and the seeing equal?' Do you not then reflect?" (Al-An'am, 50) And our Prophet (Sallallahu aleyhi we sellem) said: "Learning knowledge for a short while is better than spending the whole night in worship!" (Kanz al-Ummal) Beloved Muslims! Knowledge is learned from competent scholars and from their books. Our Prophet (Sallallahu aleyhi we sellem) said: "Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from people all at once, but He takes away knowledge by taking away the souls of scholars until no scholar remains. Thereupon, people take ignorant ones as leaders, who they ask for legal rulings, and who issue legal rulings to them without knowledge. So they themselves go astray and lead others astray." (Muslim: Al-Ilm: 5 (2673)) Beloved brothers! Every Muslim must learn what he needs for his faith, his worship, and a good character. Our Exalted Lord says regarding this: "So ask the people of reminder if you do not know!" (An-Nahl, 43) Imam Ash-Shafi'i (Rahimehullah) said: "Saying 'I do not know' is half of knowledge." We must expand our knowledge our whole lives and learn with humility. To stop learning because one is convinced of oneself, on the other hand, leads one astray. We want to conclude our khutbah with the following hadith: "Among the signs of the Hour is that knowledge will decrease, ignorance and immorality will spread, and women will increase and men will decrease until fifty women come to one man." (Al-Bukhari: Al-Ilm: 21 (No. 81))

02.10.2026 “Die Wichtigkeit des Wissens” !
