The congregation is the temple of God, in which the Holy Spirit dwells, and must be built on the foundation of Jesus Christ with eternal materials, rather than orienting itself toward human preachers or worldly methods.
Do you not know that you are God's temple and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
The text is a sermon on 1 Corinthians 3:16, in which the question 'Do you not know that you are God's temple and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?' is interpreted as a diagnostic challenge to the congregation. The preacher explains that Paul is addressing the Corinthians because of their divisions and their orientation toward individual preachers such as Apollos, Paul, or Peter. The true foundation is Jesus Christ alone, while the servants are merely God's co-workers. The congregation is understood as the temple of God, in which the Holy Spirit dwells, and as a building that is to be constructed with eternal materials such as love, truth, faith, and obedience. Worldly methods such as power, popularity, and manipulation are presented as unsustainable. The text contains personal everyday examples from family life in order to make the function of the rhetorical question comprehensible. It calls for bringing one's own conduct into alignment with the truth of the congregation's identity.

But this morning we are in our Chapter 3, Verse 16 series. We will continue with our verse or we will begin a new book, but continue in it by teaching verse by verse, and that is in the second book of Moses. Until then we will look at a few verses, from which I think they can be very helpful for us, and hopefully this number 3 16 is easy for you to remember. Last week we looked at the most well-known Chapter 3, Verse 16 in John. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. And that is a verse that you should take, put into your heart, and definitely know by heart. It will bring you so much good, but a less well-known verse is the one we will look at this morning. And Bin tried to guess it. No, no, no, no, no. And it is about 1 Corinthians 3, Verse 16. And this one is presented in a question, a question that has a kind of diagnostic behind it. It reveals or challenges us to ask, do we really know that? Because [snort] if we know it, then we will be in a certain way. [clears throat] I would like to pray that the Lord helps us as we work our way through this question. God, so we ask you that you help us. We need you to teach us, so that we hear what your Holy Spirit had to say to his church, even if it comes in a form, in a question form, that brings us to think and to evaluate, Lord. So, that we stand firm, Lord. So we ask you in Jesus' name. Amen. The question that Paul asks here in 1 Corinthians 3, Verse 16 is: Do you not know [snort] that you are God's temple and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? That is a rabbinic way of teaching, asking questions to bring you to think and to evaluate. That is the first of ten questions that Paul asks here in the book of Corinthians. Why does Paul ask this question, [snort] because he calls out the church in Corinth because of their divisions and because of their developments in the things of God. You know, the church in Corinth was founded by the Apostle Paul. Later a man named Apollos came to this church and he was a great blessing to this church. The thing that happened not only to the Corinthians at that time, but also to us, [snort] is that they found their identity and their stability in the preachers, in themselves, instead of in Christ himself. And that is why Paul had to address them about the fact that they kept saying, I am of Apollos or I am of Paul. And some said, we go all the way back. We are of Cephas. We are of Peter. They strove to build their service on these people, on this stability, their identity and everything on these people, instead of recognizing that these men were only instruments and that the only foundation and the true foundation is always Jesus Christ. And Paul makes that very clear here in this letter, that the servants through whom they came to faith, and through whom they were also built up, that they are not the ones who gave them life and that they themselves were not the foundation, but everything depends on God and is founded on Christ. Therefore come life and identity and stability. We read verses 8 to 11 in 1 Corinthians 3. But he who plants and he who waters are one. But each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field and God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another
but builds on it. But let each man take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can any person lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Amen. Paul said very clearly, we are simply God's coworkers. We see the seed, others water the seed, but only God brings forth the life. Paul says, we founded this church here, but we never made ourselves the foundation of this church. That would be very foolish. The only foundation that has stood and can stand is Jesus Christ himself. But Paul says, listen, if that is now a fact, are we all somehow involved in the building on this foundation of Jesus Christ? But each one of us must ask ourselves and evaluate that, with what are we building, what materials are we using, are we using these things that come from God and that bring stability. Things that have eternal value, things that God can give us, love, truth, through prayer and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, through faith and obedience. That is how a church grows and that is how a church becomes stable. But he also says, there are other materials that one can also use and those are wood, hay, and straw. These things have no permanence. They also bring no stability. The fact is that these things burn quickly. And that was exactly the problem in the Corinthian church. They thought that the church was simply just another institution just like all the others within this city. So they tried to build it and bring it to growth with these same things. Worldly wisdom, fleshly motives. Methods that do not rely on God, but that rely on people. Power, popularity, fame, the right connections, pressure and manipulation. These are the things that work within the world. And you can start a movement and you can gather a lot behind you, but it will not be a church, because the foundation is not Jesus. and these materials also do not come from God. Back in verse 3, verse 16. Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? Later in chapter 6 Paul speaks of the fact that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. And that is the very concrete application in this regard, but here in this context he speaks about the church. Do you not know? And we also keep asking this kind of questions. Yesterday my wife had a 12 o'clock shift. That was nice, because on Saturday morning she got up, made pancakes for all of us. We had a nice breakfast together, we had our family devotional together and then we all went to take care of our family tasks. I went up to the bedroom, made the beds and my wife went over to the guest room. That is right next to our bedroom and started to clean up there, because my sister and her family had been with us for a few weeks. Yes, she simply wanted to clean up the room and my son came up and asked, Mama, what are you doing there? What does it look like? She is fussing, but she did not understand the intention behind that question. She said, it is 11:45. Oh, she said, so my daughter was totally shocked, because she knows very well that my wife prefers to be there a half or preferably a half hour before her working time begins, and now she came home in the evening and said, the worst was, I had not properly combed my hair yet. But that question, Mama, what are you doing there? That was not at all about what she was just doing, but the question behind it was, why are you not at work long ago? And in the same way Paul asks the question here: Do you not know that you are the temple of God? not because he thinks here that they somehow lost this information, that the information somehow got lost on them, but they were acting
so, as if they had forgotten this powerful truth. And they should bring into agreement, bring into harmony, the way they acted and the way they lived. He challenges them to properly assess their situation. They should look properly and carefully at their divisions and division in this regard. Whose are you, and so on. And he reminds them again that the church in Corinth is the temple of God. If you remember, when we were in the First Epistle to the Corinthians, we already discussed that it is not meant here as the temple in its original form with all the courts, forecourts, and so on, but what is spoken here, this expression speaks of the innermost, the Holy of Holies, exactly the place where the presence of God dwelt. When the Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign, he said to them, destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up again. And he uses this same Greek expression here, this inner altar, this Holy of Holies, this meeting place of God. David Gusig in his commentary once said, when God, when Paul calls his congregation a temple, do not think that he would then use an image. The physical temple was the image. God dwelling in us, that is the reality. I like that. What makes the congregation a temple? The Holy Spirit dwells in us. That is incredible. When we gather in the name of Jesus, God is with us. The Holy Spirit dwells among us. He works through us. It is a wonderful and great truth. God is at work in a truly wonderful and special way when we are together. When Bin had just stopped playing and the worship team and we continued to worship with one voice, we were one in the Lord in that we worshipped God. That is a demonstration of the presence of the Holy Spirit who works in our lives, the proof that he dwells in us. Paul did not only reveal this wonderful truth to the congregation in Corinth, but also to the congregation in Ephesus. And he tells them, it is no longer necessary for us to identify ourselves as Jews or non-Jews, as slaves or as free. We are the body of Christ. We are the family of God. We are the dwelling place of God the Holy Spirit. We read verses 19 to 22 in Ephesians 2. So you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. That is incredible. It is completely irrelevant where you come from. Completely irrelevant what language you speak, completely irrelevant how high your income is, what education you have, none of that is relevant, because we are children of God. We are the household of faith. We are a holy priesthood. We are a temple of God in which the Holy Spirit dwells. Peter gives us the same picture here, and that in First Peter 2 in verses 4 and 5. Coming to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Jesus came to the Jewish leaders and they rejected him. He was the cornerstone, very, very valuable to God, through whom he would build his temple, his congregation, but they rejected him. They did not value him, but God valued him and made him the cornerstone. But so says Peter, you also. We all have our task. We all are stones that are fitted together, upon
that is being built. But we are also a holy priesthood and we give God holy offerings through Christ. And that is exactly what the Holy Spirit loves to do. He loves to work in our lives to bring honor, glory, and praise to Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ. And when we glorify Jesus Christ, we give God the honor, the honor and the glory. The Corinthians came from a culture that emphasized identity very much. Who you were was often found there in the position you held within society, and also in connection with whom you knew. The thing we often forget is that these different gods that they worshipped in these different temples, in Corinth there were many of them, business was done there and so on. That was not just a place where you worshipped God, your God, and offered him a sacrifice, but it was the place where you networked. Through that you worked your way up the social ladder. No wonder that when the Corinthians then brought these worldly things, this worldly thinking into their congregation, they were in principle doing the same thing. Paul, Paul, we think that Paul is the most important in the whole of Christianity. So, I am a follower, a disciple of Paul. Paul, my man. Then there was Apol, Apollos. Apollos, he was a very skilled orator. So within this Greek culture, these linguistic aspects that an orator had, were very important. This philosophy, this way of thinking. Others said, no, no, no, no, no, Apollos, that is the one. What they did was that they sought an identity in these people, instead of [snort] recognizing and acknowledging that it is only about Jesus. He is the one, there we find our identity, when we belong to him and when he belongs to us, then Paulus tells us at the end of this chapter, then all things belong to you. I do not belong to Paul or to Peter, but they belong to me. Jesus sent them to serve the congregation, to build it up, to equip it, to strengthen it on the foundation of Jesus Christ. We should allow the Holy Spirit to ask us that same question. Where do we find ourselves? Where do we find our identity? Where do we find our stability in Jesus Christ? Has anyone found their identity in any of God's servants, whom God has sent? For me, back then, when I grew up in California, hills, so that is what happened back then between Calvary Chapel in Hills, so up on the hill, and Calvary Chapel in Valley, down in the valley. Two great ministries, two great congregations, but in our flesh, so we, we go to Jack Hips' congregation. Oh, we are in David Rosales' Church congregation. And it was so silly. Someone had to tell me, do you not know that you are the temple of God, that every single congregation is the dwelling place of God. That keeps happening over and over. I belong to Chuck Smith's congregation. John, and I am with John McArthur. I am from Roger Liebi. Whoever that person is in whom you see your identity, instead of Jesus, the one who gives stability, apart from Christ, that will then somehow become instead of a unity, it will suddenly become a separation, a division, a schism, but instead, that we, the servants whom God has sent to us, to serve us, that we say, hey, they are all great, we can learn from all of them, because while they point us to Jesus, and while we build on him, the Holy Spirit works and God will be glorified in Christ. That is the question this morning. Do you know that you are the temple of God? You lack nothing when you set on God as on Jesus as the foundation and on the Holy Spirit who lives in you. So, it sounds crazy, but it is the truth. We
are the temple of God here this morning. Right here. It has nothing [snort] to do with walls. It has nothing to do with the name that stands outside. It has to do with every single one of us who has a foundation in Jesus Christ, that this community, that this assembly should exalt him and know him, in order to build on him. God has a few warnings that he pronounces against those here who want to destroy it. Just like last Sunday, we will still scratch a bit at verse 17. So maybe we need to rename it to the Chapter 3, verses 16 and 17 series. But that extends this thought from verse 16. If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is you. Wow. Wow. That is a strong warning. So once more here, the context is not our own body, our flesh, but the congregation. So, there are pastors or priests who have once told, if you smoke, then you destroy the temple of the Holy Spirit and God will destroy you. That is not what this says here. This exhortation must be taken very seriously by those who want to see division and for those who want to defile the altar of God by bringing in false teaching. Someone Jesus has here pronounced a very terrible warning against the one who destroys someone's faith in Matthew 18 in verses 3 to 7 is probably the last verse where we will go. Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. And whoever humbles himself like this child, this is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one such child in my name, receives me. But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him that a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were sunk into the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks. For it is necessary that stumbling blocks come, but woe to the man through whom the stumbling block comes. Jesus made this little child that was there into an example of simple faith and simple trust. Trust in him, faith in him. Nothing that one has oneself to give, but simply only to receive. Just so you must be if you want to come into the kingdom of God, but he is not necessarily only speaking about this one little child or about children in general, but about all believers who come to Christ in complete dependence, and in very simple faith on Christ for salvation. There are false teachers, there are spiritual fakes. They want to sneak in and turn vulnerable young believers into their own disciples, to make them dependent on themselves and not on Christ, to abuse them, to take that as a way for their power-hungry things. And the Bible tells us here that God will judge them. [snort] The thing is, that Paul says, the Holy Spirit dwells in you, in us. And [snort] the work of the Holy Spirit is hindered by these divisive works. And the thing is the following, if there is in any of us a departing foundation, that we go away from the foundation of Jesus Christ. If we find ourselves in that we adorn ourselves all the time with a certain man or also a certain woman, then we must ask ourselves this question. Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? That all that God has prepared for you in life, that is available to you because the Holy Spirit dwells in us. He gives life, he gives power, he instructs us, he empowers us, he gives us gifts, so that we can grow, so that we can be fruitful, that we can be the light, salt, testimonies about the risen Jesus
Jesus Christ. John, that was our message today from 1 Corinthians 3, verse 16. I would like to ask you to stand up with me while we pray together. Lord, we thank you, Lord. We thank you that you speak to us, that you love us. Thank you that you also challenge us because of that, that you correct us. Lord, you know that none of your servants is able to be the foundation of your church, but that it must always be Jesus. So we pray today that we acknowledge this, that we return to this again, Lord, and as your church, Lord, [snort] help us to build with these materials that come from you, Lord, that they stand, Lord, that they, that they give you honor and glory. And that in this process we experience great unity, busy, that we will be so busy with your greatness and your goodness, not that we are busy with these small things that divide us.

So, damit wir Her stehen, Herr. So bitten wir dich in Jesu Namen. Amen.
