State-funded talent development in Germany is misguided because it predominantly supports religious and partisan political foundations, even though the majority of highly gifted people identify neither with religions nor with political parties and prefer a humanist foundation.
For this does not orient itself to the needs of gifted people, but to the lobbying interests of religious or political associations.
The text reports on a study by the Giordano Bruno Foundation and Mensa in Germany, which shows that a majority of highly gifted people support the establishment of a humanist-naturalist talent development foundation. 78 percent of those surveyed support such a foundation, and 83 percent demand its equal treatment with existing religious foundations. The sample is not representative of the general population, but it focuses on the group relevant to talent development. The respondents are predominantly without religious affiliation, naturalistically oriented, and exhibit a strong orientation toward science. The text argues that the current state-funded talent development, which predominantly supports religious and partisan political foundations, does not correspond to the interests of highly gifted people. The chair of the Giordano Bruno Foundation speaks of a misalignment and a violation of the state's obligation of ideological neutrality. The results are cited as evidence for the equal treatment lawsuit of the Bertha von Suttner Foundation.

In contrast to religious endowment foundations, the humanist “Bertha von Suttner Studies Foundation” (BvS) has not yet received state funding, as it is allegedly claimed that there is “no need” for such support. However, the actual beneficiaries of such studies foundations, namely highly gifted individuals, apparently see it differently, as a study shows, the results of which were published in advance by the “Research Group Worldviews in Germany” (fowid).
The study conducted by the Giordano Bruno Foundation in cooperation with “Mensa in Germany” demonstrates that highly gifted individuals overwhelmingly support a humanist-naturalist talent promotion foundation. Specifically, 78 percent of the 292 participants in the “Mensa Worldview Study” voted in favor of establishing a talent promotion foundation “that supports individuals with a humanist and naturalist worldview.” Only 8 percent of those surveyed rejected this, while 14 percent expressed indecision on this question.
The percentage of those advocating for the equal treatment of such a humanist-naturalist studies foundation with existing religious endowment foundations is even higher: 83 percent of those surveyed voted in favor of equal treatment with religious providers, only 6 percent voted against, and 11 percent were undecided.
Relevant Group for Talent Promotion
As the empirical social scientist Tobias Wolfram emphasizes in his first fowid article on the study results (a more extensive academic paper will follow later), the sample of the “Mensa Worldview Study” is not representative of the general population, but is informative regarding the question of talent promotion, as it focuses on highly gifted individuals. A prerequisite for Mensa membership is a minimum IQ of 130, which is considered a classic criterion for “high giftedness.”
In contrast to the general population, the participants in the study are “predominantly non-denominational and significantly more oriented towards naturalism than the German population,” Wolfram explains: “In the sample, two-thirds report no religious affiliation; the average self-reported IQ is 137.8. Furthermore, about two-thirds hold a master’s degree, a diploma, a state examination, or a magister degree, or have completed a doctoral or habilitation degree.”
Worldview Orientation of Highly Gifted Individuals
In a second article, also published in advance on fowid.de, Tobias Wolfram goes into greater detail about the differences between the surveyed group of highly gifted individuals and the general population. Particularly striking is the difference regarding a worldview shaped either by naturalism or theism. The naturalist view that there are no supernatural beings (such as gods, angels, goblins, or demons) that intervene in the laws of nature is agreed with by 73.4 percent of the highly gifted individuals in the “Mensa Worldview Study,” but only by 36.3 percent of the general population – a difference of 37.1 percentage points. Correspondingly low is the belief in miracles among the study participants (13.4 percent compared to 49 percent in the general population).
A characteristic feature of the gifted is a strong orientation towards science: 92.8 percent of those surveyed refer positively to the theory of evolution and reject the biblical doctrine of creation by 88.6 percent. 79.3 percent support addressing the central problems of humanity through scientific efforts, whereas religious-spiritual solutions are rejected by 80 percent of those surveyed. Notably, the orientation towards science in the Mensa group is accompanied by a clear humanistic orientation: 95.5 percent of those surveyed uphold humanistic values in the sense of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. How modern or naturalistic the underlying concept of humanism is becomes apparent in the fact that it is not conceived in opposition to non-human nature, but includes non-human living beings. Thus, 84.4 percent of those surveyed believe that “all living beings deserve respect.”
Nevertheless, the group of gifted individuals examined is not homogeneous in terms of worldview. Using multivariate data analysis, three different profiles can be distinguished. The largest group (with just under 150 persons) can be classified as “secular-humanistic / little-spiritual,” the second-largest group (around 70 persons) as “humanistic / privately-spiritual,” and the smallest group (around 50 persons) as “institutionally religious.” Tobias Wolfram concludes from this that “non-denominational and secular milieus should not be described merely by the absence of religion.” The data speak for “further investigating the positive worldview contents that in non-denominational milieus take the place of classic religiosity as independent objects.”
Misalignment of Giftedness Promotion
What does this mean for giftedness promotion in Germany? Currently, the German state supports, in addition to the “Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes,” the trade-union-affiliated “Hans Böckler Foundation,” and the business-affiliated “Stiftung der deutschen Wirtschaft,” ten further giftedness promotion works, which are either religious (Avicenna Studienwerk, Cusanuswerk, Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk, Evangelisches Studienwerk) or anchored in party politics (Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Friedrich Naumann Foundation, Hanns Seidel Foundation, Heinrich Böll Foundation, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Rosa Luxemburg Foundation). However, this stands, according to Michael Schmidt-Salomon, chairman of the Giordano Bruno Foundation, “in stark contrast to the interests of the gifted, i.e., those people who should actually be at the center of giftedness promotion.”
In this context, Schmidt-Salomon refers to another result of the “Mensa Worldview Study”: “Only 20 percent of those surveyed identify with a religion, only 33.8 percent with any party! This is a clear sign of the current misalignment of state giftedness promotion. Because it does not orient itself to the needs of gifted people, but to the lobbying interests of religious or political associations. If it were according to the will of the gifted, the humanistic Bertha von Suttner Studienwerk would long since have been recognized as worthy of support. I am curious how long the responsible state authorities will continue to ignore the empirical facts.”
In any case, the results of the Mensa Worldview Study are "further strong evidence for the equality lawsuit of the Bertha von Suttner Study Foundation": "It would be completely nonsensical if the state continued to predominantly support religious and party-affiliated study foundations, even though most highly gifted people cannot identify with either religions or political parties. Instead, the state should recognize the study foundation that is particularly tailored to the interests of the highly gifted, namely the Bertha von Suttner Study Foundation. Anything else would not only constitute a gross disregard for the needs of the people to be supported, but also a massive violation of the state's obligation of worldview neutrality."
The Bertha von Suttner Study Foundation (BvS) was founded in 2021 by the Humanist Association of Germany (HVD), the Giordano Bruno Foundation (gbs), the Humanist Academy Germany (HAD), and the Federal Working Group of Humanist Students (BAG). With its help, humanist students are to receive the same opportunities for support as their religious fellow students. The call for applications for the "Suttner Scholarship 2026" is currently open; information on how to apply can be found here.
