True legacy is not created by the individual, but by a strong community that places Jesus Christ at its center and thereby extends beyond the death of the individual.

A strong community that has Jesus Christ at its center builds something strong outward. A community, not an individual.

The text is a sermon about leaving a legacy and the importance of community. The central thesis is that God builds through community something greater than the individual person. The sermon emphasizes that salvation does not come from one's own works, but that one is saved in order to do good. The fragility of community in a divided society is addressed, in which people isolate themselves by worldview, politics, or generation. Using the example of Jesus's first disciples, it is shown that community brings together people of the most diverse origins and convictions. The sermon calls on the listener to question what they are truly leaving behind and to allow themselves to be built into the congregation as a living stone.

Maybe you're stumbling over this sermon for the first time. We're talking about leaving a legacy. Build a Legacy. That is our deep conviction that God has something in mind for your life that is greater than you yourself. God has something in mind for your life that is greater than you yourself. And I'm going to spoil the entire sermon today with one sentence up front. And He is building something through you and your life that does not rest solely on your shoulders, but on the shoulders of a community that has Jesus Christ at its center. Now you can sleep. The whole sermon you can simply just now. No, don't do that. A strong community builds something outward. A strong community that has Jesus Christ at its center builds something strong outward. A community, not an individual. That is what we want to talk about in the coming weeks. And today we really start with the center. That is the community. And the smallest community you can have is your community with God. And maybe you don't even know that. You think, I don't know, that is not a community in me, one that the Bible calls it, I don't even know if the Bible, but we also call it this intimacy with God, this oneness with God, you might not know that at all. Then a heartfelt invitation to pay very, very close attention, because there is something that is greater than what you know. And if you say today, I am a Christian, Jesus Christ lives in me. I am baptized in His name, I am saved through Jesus Christ, then I'll tell you one thing. You are not saved because you have done such good deeds. Not on the basis of your works have you been saved. Not because you are so good, because you are so faithful, because you can play the piano so perfectly, because you are so devoted. You are saved because God is God. But you are saved to do good. You have been saved not to remain with yourself, but to do good. That is what it will be about, also all the things in the coming weeks, that separate us from this view of your and my life. Jesus Christ came to save you, not because you are good, but to bring forth the good from you. If you really believe that, then your life is easy. Then my life is easy. It doesn't feel that way anymore, but it is easy, because it is not you who must accomplish the good, but God in you. That is the image of a legacy. That is cool. I don't know what you are building right now. Maybe you are building in your company, building a bit around and saying: "Yes, my company, that is what I am building." That is good, if God told you that. Then I ask you, question yourself, what exactly are you building in your company? What exactly do you want to leave behind? That is the invitation to think about that. What legacy do I want to leave behind? Maybe you are building your family. That is beautiful. I have a family myself, I love family. Ask yourself, what do I want to leave behind in my family? What do I want to continue living when I am no longer here? Because honestly, you and I know that very well, if you leave money behind, that is nice for your children and your grandchildren, but one of them will spend it at some point. And if you are honest, then you know, whether you believe in God or not, together with me, that you will not take anything from this life with you. You can stuff your bag to the brim at the end of your life. You can do that, because it is not the first one to do it. But I believe, deep inside you, you know. You will not take it anywhere. That which is your legacy will continue to live here on earth. And I find the questions incredibly exciting. Maybe you also say, I am building my future. That is beautiful. God says in the Bible, by the way, has a future full of hope and good plans for you. That is great that you are building your future. What do you want your What does your future self say about your present self? What do you want your future self to say about you? What future do you want to build and what is it founded on? And perhaps you also belong to the people. There are people who say, I built this myself, I alone keep this, my treasure, that is one. And honestly, you might be laughing now, but I know such thoughts too. No, I built this myself. You will notice during the sermon, I am telling you a part of my story and I know these thoughts. I built this myself. I am keeping this. I am taking this for myself. And this is not an accusing series for you, but a series of encouragement to say, question yourself. That [snort] is good, that is his code, what a coach does. He asks questions and the answer you actually know deep inside yourself, you can simply give yourself the answer. What would God say about what you are building today? What you are building? And it can be spoiled upfront to sound mega Christian and still be dead. Do you know that? It can sound mega Christian, what you do, but it is no legacy. It will not stand when you go. That is really exciting. I love impressive structures. I have brought you three. Schloss Neuschwanstein, you can guess like in a quiz, castle [laughter] Notre Dame. And the Eiffel Tower. I love such structures that endure, as Notre Dame I googled, I hope that is correct. 900 years approximately, it has been standing already, right? Eiffel Tower 170 or so something, Schloss Neuschwanstein, similar, but crazy, right? What people have built. Do you know what the Bible says? Let yourself be built in as a living stone into your congregation. Let yourself be built in as a living stone. Something that lives. That is beautiful, but that dead is dead stone. Sorry. And I exactly, but beautiful. But I believe that Jesus invites you and me to leave a living legacy. Something that outlasts you and lives through your life. And I believe that it needs a real community that is strong inside, so that it works outward. I believe that it needs a community that is strong inside, so that it works outward. Because you know what? When you read the Bible and take it seriously, God is community in himself, that is simply his nature. He thought, you cannot do this alone. We do this together with God in the middle, because he says: "Without me you can do nothing anyway. Nothing endures if you do not have me. It will not outlast you. God is community in himself and when we have Jesus in the middle, we will automatically leave a legacy. I believe that deeply. We will do that. And you do not have to believe in God to notice that this construct community is quite fragile, right? So, you do not have to, so you have to be blind to not notice that we live in a time of society where there is a lot of division, a lot of conflicts, we have that here in the church too, really? Yes, we do. Why not? We are, so right, we have that too. We have also talked a lot about it in the last years, uh years, weeks, months in the last year a lot about community and how fragile that is, uh also spoken and how we want to treat each other in the church. But you do not have to believe in God to notice that unity is quite a fragile thing. Ah, he does not have my political opinion. Ah, he does not have my interests. Ah, you think differently than I. Let us better leave it. Let us better avoid each other. Worldview, social status, generations, maybe you know it too. Conflict of generations. Yes, he does not know what he is talking about. He is only 20. She does not know what she is saying. She is 50. Can you write him off? The lifestyle is vegan to AfD voter. What? Green voters. Seriously you? No, So, that means I can never sit next to you. Even in church. And society is increasingly asking: are you one of us or are you one of them? And you can apply that one-to-one to the church. Maybe to your small group, maybe to your family. Are you on this side or are you on that side? Because if you're on that side, no offense. You know what? Ciao. Ciao. And then I believe the following happens. I brought you a cage. I believe that we Christians very often also go into a cage that isolates us, that locks us away from community. And I don't want to get too close to you. We've talked a lot about it. I don't want to get too deep into it, but I don't know where you stand. Maybe you notice it in your own life—family, friendships falling apart—and you're like invited, I would say tempted, to simply isolate yourself, to step out of what God actually has planned for your life. Let's take a look at Jesus' first small group. Okay, I brought it for you. AI-generated, and look, when I read the Bible sometimes, I picture it like this. Jesus in the middle, all the same background, same clothes, same hairstyles, everyone eating, everyone listening to Jesus, everyone is friendly, everyone is kind, everyone is wow, interested. Nobody is late, everyone has the same worldview. That's how I used to picture it. And then I read the Bible, of course, but also watched The Chosen. Sometimes a series on Netflix can help you, feel free to check it out if you like watching series, and then you realize what kind of characters Jesus gathered around him. Thomas, who doubts all the time, who probably asks uncomfortable questions. There's one who is basically a revolutionary, who was just waiting for someone to come and push the whole people out of the Roman occupation, to crush them, to simply go in with violence. He sits together with a tax collector who works for the Roman Empire, who is hated by all the Jews. And then it turns out that Jesus is enough. They sat down together, they broke the bread, and just like that, the things that separated them were gone. Wow. And that's what some people think about being a Christian. I hope I'm not offending you, but I used to think that if I become a Christian, everything will fall off me. I'll become such a bore, sorry, with Birkenstocks on, guitar in hand. I'll have to learn guitar, that's terrible. I'll go to Africa and do missions. By the way, the Africans come to us to mission us. Setting that aside, but I thought that, and everywhere in my house Bible verses would hang, because that's how it is when you're a Christian. And lo and behold, I became a Christian because Christ is my Savior—I'll tell you later how he saved me, or that he saved me. I accept Christ and I'm still the same. And yet not. I'm still the same and yet not. And God thought, let's put them in community and then we'll clean up all their selfish, arrogant, I-talk-about-myself behavior, their facades, what they've built up for everyone to believe about them, and we'll take them out of their cage piece by piece. That's what community does, because that is an illusion. I once applied it to today's time. It could look like this in your small group, right? Jesus would have a small group, that's AI-generated, so mega exaggerated. I find it funny. The one with the AfD mug is talking to the Dieter Bohlen fan, and my generation, but you know the type of people. Mega cool. Then the pious Christian woman with the Bible under her arm, who simply wants to save the world. Then the musician here, a Settlist. Good, woman, always in a good mood, always in a good mood, right? Let but just easy, just leave it here, just leave it there. And uh you uh Vegan is Love, so an animal rights activist before the Lord Green voters, no idea, is of course eye-catching, doesn't exist. Uh in real life it's AI generated, but I think it could be that your small group, your church looks like that. And I in my head think so, I I put together my cuddle club, then we can get along well. If you would open my Instagram, there are all sorts of things that I like, that are shown to me [clearing throat] there. I think the world actually only exists Christians or Comedians. There are Christians and Comedians. Done. There is no one who does not agree with me. That is my Instagram. That dear friends, is not reality. In Acts 159 we read: "Over this there came to be such a heated dispute between the two that they separated, Paul and Barnabas heated dispute, so that they separated and each did his ministry elsewhere. Didn't they get along?" Yes, they didn't get along or what that evening. No, they argued so heatedly and definitely not the first time. Community and discipleship and uh something to leave behind that cannot be destroyed. By the way God builds a legacy through you and me that can no longer be taken by the world, happens at a price, that can mean that you come into conflicts that you perhaps would never have outside the church, because you perhaps would simply leave and disagreements, that can mean that, because unity Jesus prays in his prayer in John for unity. Not everyone should agree with me. Noah should get along as well as possible with Janina. That is not what Jesus prays, but Father, I ask you, that they are one. One, not two. Unity means that Jesus Christ is greater than what divides us. Unity means that Jesus Christ is greater than what divides us. Make an example. You can also as a Christian, no matter where you are on your way in your faith life, you can sit in prisons and I believe that you know exactly what I mean. If you are in it, you now know what I mean. And I tell you, this week I was very, very, maybe it also became apparent to me, this week extremely, but I was invited every day at least three, four times to go into the cage. Wow, that hurt me now. Wow, that statement is not okay. Mm. So, I am now really hurt, wounded or? So, that makes no sense. I simply give up. I tell you how it is. I thought several times this week. I simply give up on what I am currently working on. And perhaps you know that in your own life. Perhaps you also have tendencies where you say, I set myself up like this, that was too intense. I don't want to anymore. I have been in three churches now. No one has seen me. Then I will now build my own kingdom here. Let me hang a lamp up here. It's beautiful God's light in my room. So there is also a switch box in our bathroom. You can also follow so many switches. That is so pleasant. And it still fits a flower in and then you can hang your gift and your successes in life. You can say, wow. I am exaggerating it. I am exaggerating it on purpose, because I know this cage too well. I am telling you nothing that is not in my life. It can feel so pious and you are away from it. what God actually wants to build through your life. [snort] God builds you in as a living building block for a legacy that no one can destroy anymore. no one destroys anymore. And the foundation of this building is Jesus Christ himself. He has set you free. Him and me he has set free from the cage, so that you are free. I believe, we have it as a Bible, you must help me briefly. Christ has set us free. He wants us to remain free now. Stand firm therefore and do not let yourselves to yoke back into slavery. That is what Jesus means for me in my life, for this passage of Scripture. Come out. [snort] And it is hard. At that time I was on the road with Jesus for half a year. Meaning, I was found by Jesus in this cage and people were involved in that. You know that when you are in this church or somewhere else on the road with Jesus, you are automatically involved in the rescue of others, because God rescues people and he rescued my life out of such darkness. I was sitting in here and everything was nicely painted over. No one saw how I was actually doing. It was a facade in my life that cost me everything to keep it up, to maintain it. And you know what it cost me? On the inside I had built my house of cards and it was so fragile. I thought, if something comes and the house of cards collapses, then I am exposed. So I did nothing else but build my protection here. And Jesus came, because people told me about him, because people invited me. My friends prayed and then I came to Leo Bigger at an event from ICF Zurich and Leo was the leader of the IF Movement. Maybe you have also heard or seen a sermon from him. I love that, because he is so beautifully simple and he had a huge hand prop on the stage. I don't know how many people, he certainly did not cut it out himself with a carpet knife, how many interns, trainees, staff employees and volunteers Leo had for this huge hand. And he said on the, I understood nothing, nothing at all content-wise, zero zero. But he said, God loves you and he holds your life in his hand. That is all I knew. Then I said, I need a rescuer. And then I took the hand and as a logical consequence I stepped into the baptismal pool, said, I am now putting everything on one card, because I had built myself a house of cards, that does not, that does not hold up, I do not want to keep building around it anymore. I need a rescuer and a redeemer. And I took this hand and said, I am putting everything on one card. I bought myself a ring, it is engraved, King of Hearts. That was my card, on that I put everything and I was not disappointed, because the Bible says, he will not disappoint anyone who puts their whole trust in him, sets it. And that became my foundation. Christ himself is the cornerstone, says the Bible, whom the builders rejected. But only through him we have salvation. Only whoever calls on his name will be saved. That is my foundation. And on that God has been building something for 20 years that no one will destroy. You can bring the Bible passage, Nathanael. For Jesus is the stone whom you builders rejected, which has now become the cornerstone. In him alone is salvation. In all of heaven there is no other name by which people can call to be saved. Amazing. Jesus alone tears down walls. Walls of hostility, walls of your envy, your jealousy. He pulls you out. And you know how? Through a sustainable community. And when you are grafted into a community, then it does not stay with you. It multiplies. That means, people come to your community, community, and experience rescue. Experience Jesus, when he is in the middle of your community. That will happen and that is the legacy that you leave behind, that no one will tear down anymore, because the cornerstone is set. That is so crazy. That is so, that is the best news that anyone has ever told me in my life through a hand and through many, many other people who told me about Jesus. Then there was in the, in the church, in the one I was in uh after I was in Zurich, there was a woman, Ute. I believe that she does not know, even if I I have told them 100 times what kind of legacy she has left in my life. Ute loved Jesus. She said, come to my shared apartment, you'll get the biggest room. The condition is that you go to my small group. I was like, oh my gosh, she had Bible verses all over the bathroom, Bible verses everywhere. She was wearing sandals. I thought, okay, I'm really where I never wanted to end up. But I'm going there because the hunger was so great in this community of people with whom I would never have done anything together, because it was simply not my thing. One of them, everything was always too loud for her. She was always like, oh God, please not so loud. The other one always somehow couldn't get her mouth open. I was always like, I have to talk, because I talk so much and then I always thought, I have to somehow balance it out. [sighs] Terrible bunch, Jesus in the middle and a leader who said, we worship Jesus. And from that year I have built the most in me. People invested in me and I, we are talking about a church that has no consumer Christians, but that knows investors. Investors, that means people who say, Jesus Christ is my foundation. And from this intimacy with God it cannot be otherwise than that I invest in people. And how that works, we talk about it for weeks. We talk even more about isolation and loneliness, the prison of our time. We talk about building church, Mannheim, legacy for Mannheim and the surrounding area. We talk about how you can let yourself be yoked into this vision of building something greater, that surpasses yourself and that is no longer destroyable. But it begins with you trusting Christ perhaps f

Build a Legacy. Nicht, weil du so gut bist, weil du so treu bist, weil so perfektes Klavier spielen kannst, weil du so hingegeben bist. Dann frage ich dich, hinterfrag dich, was genau baust du in deiner Firma? Was genau möchtest du hinterlassen? Frag dich, welche was möchte ich hinterlassen in meiner Familie? Was würde Gott über das sagen, was du heute baust? An was du baust? Was Menschen gebaut haben. Weißt du, was die Bibel sagt? Lass dich einbauen als lebendiger Stein in deine Gemeinde. Lass dich einbauen als lebendiger Stein. Etwas, was lebt. Weil weißt du was? Was? Weißt du was? Ciao. Ciao. Mm. Also, da bin ich jetzt echt gekränkt, verletzt oder? Also, das macht keinen Sinn.
