Greenpeace activists protest with money-storage projection on a fuel depot against the growing crisis profits of oil companies
Oil companies have been earning crisis-driven excess profits of 5.9 billion euros since the start of the Iran war, which are not justified by procurement costs and must therefore be stopped as profiteering.
According to a new calculation by oil market expert Steffen Bukold commissioned by Greenpeace, motorists recently paid an average of between 13 euros (petrol) and 17 euros (diesel) per 50-litre tank fill directly to the oil companies in addition.
Greenpeace activists projected a video of a money rain onto a fuel depot in the port of Hamburg on 18 September 2026. They were protesting against the rising excess profits of oil companies in the German fuel station market. Oil market expert Steffen Bukold calculated, on behalf of Greenpeace, that motorists had recently paid an average of 13 to 17 euros per 50-litre tank fill in addition to the oil companies. Since the start of the Iran war, the excess profits had accumulated to 5.9 billion euros. In August, the monthly excess profits reached a new record value of 1.2 billion euros. The core message is that the oil companies' crisis-driven price increases are not justified by procurement costs. Greenpeace, under the slogan 'Stop the oil profiteering!', is calling for intervention against these profits. The text refers to an online-available study as evidence.
