Peaceful coexistence and global justice require active interreligious dialogue, volunteer engagement, and a clear political stance against war and violence, particularly in the conflict in Gaza.
Not to shed blood, but to donate blood. With 108 blood donation drives, we have contributed to saving human lives and thereby also promoted peace in Germany.
The text is a speech for the 'Day of Religions' in Cologne, held under the motto 'Faith, Dialogue, Engagement.' The speaker, a representative of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, emphasizes the importance of interreligious dialogue and peaceful coexistence in a diverse urban society. He commends the engagement of the 'Peace Cycling Club Cologne,' which symbolically protected Cologne Cathedral following Islamic attack warnings, and refers to the award given to this initiative. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is presented as a peaceful, reform-oriented community that acts through volunteer work, blood donations, and humanitarian aid (Humanity First). A central point is the call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, with the speaker referring to a genocide and urging German politics to engage in clear peace work. The speech connects local Cologne identity with global peace work and calls for compassion and active engagement.

Good evening and a very warm welcome to the Pazzetta of the historic town hall in Cologne. Dear Mr. Wageshauser, dear Mr. Imam Mali, dear members of the Council of Religion and representatives of all other religious communities, dear Mr. Teacher, dear guests from politics, administration, and civic society. I welcome you all very warmly to the Day of Religion 2025 here with us in the historic town hall, and we are meeting today under the motto "Believe, Dialogue, Engagement, Experience Islam in Cologne." And today it is primarily about making the personal experience of faith, culture, and connection clear. We get to know the diversity of currents, traditions, and of course the believers themselves, the people, the learned, the engaged, families, young people, people from art and science. We want to talk about religious and cultural traditions and customs, about liturgies that give people orientation, such as daily prayer, fasting during Ramadan, mutual support within the faith communities. We invite you all to listen, to ask questions and to share your own experiences, to exchange views, and to do so in an atmosphere of trust. Not only in our civic society, but also among us, this dialogue is needed so that we can truly recognize and make use of our diversity as a strength and an enrichment. And no other Cologne institution stands for this approach as much as the Council of Religion. Dear guests, the vast majority of you know that in Cologne people from around 130 faith communities live. And in view of this diversity, it was self-evident for me to take on the chairmanship of the Council of Religion and thereby to contribute to peaceful coexistence in our city and also to benefit from it myself, because we have always succeeded in developing a common stance even in difficult crisis situations, as to how we as the Council of Religion want to approach these situations. And therefore I first thank you all, the members of the Council of Religion, for the fact that you have always dealt with one another in a good atmosphere, with great commitment, great openness, with different arguments that are of course also exchanged within the Council of Religion, with different stances, and have arrived at a common stance. Thank you very much. The Cologne Council of Religion is a voluntary association of religious communities and organizations that commit themselves to the promotion and the equal coexistence of all women and men of Cologne. It is a forum that is united in the belief that mutual acceptance and respect, human rights, and the respect for each person's religious confession are fundamental values of a good coexistence in diversity. And therefore I also believe that this dialogue remains a duty, in quotes, of the city, especially in view of our present, in which global conflicts are intensifying, conflicts that can also divide here locally. For us in Cologne, it therefore means to continue working on commonality, to emphasize what unites us, for that is a lot. We all strive for humanity, for dignity, for peace, and for a good life together. That is why it is also my great wish that the work in the Council of Religion continues as engaged as before. Next year the body will celebrate its 20th anniversary, and I hope very much that it will then succeed in making the significance of interreligious dialogue even more visible and also to inspire even more people, young people, for the exchange. The peaceful coexistence that we have in Cologne overwhelmingly is not a self-runner, but it must be negotiated anew again and again. And for that, voluntary engagement, as the members of the Council demonstrate to us, is decisive. Voluntary
engaged people invest effort in compassion and they invest effort in dialogue. An example of this for me is the Peace Bicycle Club Cologne, which will be presented to us shortly. In December 23, its members protected young Muslim women and men at Cologne Cathedral. Symbolically. They had no weapons, but they stood up and protected the cathedral after the Islamic attack threat. In the winter cold, they formed a human chain and held up placards on which the following sentence could be read: "I am a Muslim and I stand for the protection of the church." This action sent a signal against hate and terrorism and was at the same time, of course, a shining example of how our religious diversity can be protected. I am very pleased that the Peace Bicycle Club Cologne was awarded the NRW Volunteer Award 2025 by the Association of Engaged Civil Society and is even nominated for the German Engagement Prize. My congratulations on this success and my heartfelt thanks for your courage and your contribution to the social cohesion in Cologne. [Applause] Dear guests, I naturally very much hope that this evening as the Day of Religion and the Prayer of Religion then on the weekend will give us all new strength for a peaceful coexistence in our city. And I thank the many engaged helpers of the Amadia Muslimat for their commitment around this Day of Religion in Cologne. I wish you all a good, an inspiring and a strength-giving evening. Thank you very much. Dear guests, alhamdulillah. The peace and blessing of God be with you, have a nice good evening. I seek refuge in God from the accursed Satan. [Music] In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O mankind, We created you [Music] I [Music] We created you [Music] from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another [Music] Indeed, the noblest of you [Music] in the sight of God is the most righteous of you. God is All-Knowing, All-Aware. The 14th verse from the 49th chapter of the Holy Quran was just recited: "Allah the Almighty speaks in the Holy Quran to the people: In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O you people, We have created you from male and female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Truly, the most honored of you in the sight of God, the Almighty, is the most God-fearing among you. Behold, God is All-Knowing and All-Aware." Bismillahirahmanirahim. In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Dear Mayor, dear ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters, it is a great pleasure and honor for me to be able to speak here today in Cologne City Hall before such a diverse audience. Cologne is a special place for me and for the Ahmed Muslim Community. Few other cities in Germany stand so strongly for diversity as Cologne. A diversity that shapes the face of this city and gives it radiance far beyond the borders of Germany to this day. This special role of Cologne is not only shown today, but is deeply rooted in history. Cologne became an intellectual center of Europe at an early stage. With the arrival of the relics of the Holy Three Kings in the year 114, it developed into a significant place of pilgrimage. With the founding of the university in the year 1388, Cologne also became a place of knowledge and exchange. Last but not least, Cologne has always been a city of religions with one of the oldest Jewish communities in Germany and to this day with a multitude of churches, synagogues, mosques and temples. This close connection to religion also brought early points of contact with Islam. They set a special sign, a sign that Muslim life is visible and audible and belongs to Cologne. Today's event, in which Muslims are invited as speakers, also stands for exactly this attitude, an attitude that they express in an exemplary way with the title Faith, Dialogue, Engagement, Islam, Experience in Cologne. But Cologne stands for something else as well, for
something that has personally shaped me, for peace. Cologne was and is a city of the peace movement. In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, when hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets against nuclear weapons and for disarmament, Cologne was an important place for peace. I too was very active in the peace movement, which is why this period decisively shaped the course of my life. The longing for peace was so strong that it ultimately led me to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Islam means life. And, uh, for 100 years the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Germany has also been trying to make clear what a peace potential lies in Islam. Actually in all religions, but especially in the youngest of the great religions there is an incredible peace potential. We even greet with the greeting Assalamu alaikum, peace be with you, many times every day. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was founded in 1889 in India by a man who claimed to be the Messiah and Mahdi expected by all religions. Clearly, potential for conflict. His goal was to lead people back into a living spiritual relationship with God through this Islamic reform community. A relationship that stifles violence and extremism in the bud and leads to a worldwide movement of peace. Today, some 130 years later, this movement is present in more than 200 countries of the world. It is led by a purely religious Caliph, who has his seat in London and acts worldwide as an ambassador of peace. When His Holiness the Caliph gave a keynote speech at Capitol Hill in 2012, he was awarded the title Ambassador for Peace. This award stands as a representative for what has characterized our community since its founding, namely peace. And the founder, the promised Messiah, teaches: "One cannot love the Creator if one does not love the creation." And from this teaching also grows our worldwide motto: Love for all, hatred for none. The love for creation is ultimately the key to peace. And it is precisely this love that forms the foundation of all our projects, which we, as the oldest Muslim community in Germany, implement entirely self-financed and carried by volunteers. Our Imam, Herr Malier, will speak more extensively about this. It is important that in this work respect for the other grows, that it is manifested. And this dignity of the human being is today threatened by more than 50 wars. Our answer to these wars is: Not to shed blood, but to donate blood. With 108 blood donation campaigns we have contributed to saving human lives and thus also to promoting peace in Germany. But our peace engagement does not end at the German borders. With our relief organization Humanity First we have already supported 6.4 million people worldwide. In Benin we opened the first eye clinic, in many countries we built wells for clean drinking water for the first time. By the way, also in Gaza we made sure that the water remained clean at certain points. Where peace is most strongly threatened. The terrible suffering that many can only imagine through a few images in the media, we experience firsthand. Now that renowned scientists, institutions, and NGOs are not only speaking of the most serious war crimes in Gaza, but unanimously also of genocide, there can no longer be two opinions. It needs an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, and it is precisely this that we draw attention to in Germany with our 93 organized vigil so far. Not only the surveys showing that around 80% of Germans are clearly against the war, but also our personal conversations with thousands of citizens show: Germany must commit itself more strongly and more clearly for peace in Gaza. If we fail to take a clear position in the case of Gaza, then the hopes for peace in general will diminish. But precisely
Many conversations, especially here in Cologne, fill me with confidence. People are thirsting for peace and the voices for a broad peace movement, like the one I have experienced firsthand, are growing louder again. We need a new peace movement. My wish and my hope are that we, from here, together set new impulses for peace, that Cologne, the city of religions, of dialogue and of diversity, becomes a symbol for peace again for Germany and far beyond. You have seen through our projects that for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community peace is the pivot and center. For over 100 years we have also been in Germany on a peace mission with faith, dialogue, commitment and lived spirituality. I hope that we can win you as co-workers in this important peace mission and I thank you heartily for your attention. [Applause] Ready? I also greet you with the Islamic greeting. Peace and blessings of Allah upon his family. Dear Lord Mayor, Ms. Reker, dear Federal Chairman, Mr. Wagenschneider, Mr. Abraham Lehrer, Vice President of the Central Council of Jews, and also um Raffi Rotenberg, Mr. Öztürk, uh all the other members who are sitting here from the Council of Religions right now and our friends, our helpers, police officers today in civilian clothes, but um those who know them, know them. And uh I am very grateful that you all appeared here today, all uh guests who took the time. I thank you very, very heartily as well. Our former President Kri is here, whom I would like to mention in a very special way. The years that you will see here in a small short presentation, he was always on my side. Also the Youth Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Maksud, also our Chairwoman of the Women's Section, Ms. Salkber, the women, men, children, young people – all have helped in their own way. For that I am grateful. I alone would never have accomplished that. That is the power that is here in the background, that you see, and also those who unfortunately today because of illness or because of other reasons did not appear here today. Therefore I am grateful to each and every one of you who is here today, um that you appeared and share your uh precious time with us. I begin. I will try to do it quickly, short and compact. There are many years in which we could celebrate our progress and successes. I am hurrying. Um, this is the beautiful face which our Federal Chairman just mentioned in his um in his speech, in his greeting. This is the Messiah Mahdi, in whom the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believes, the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and from him the light also radiates. Uh also somewhere our our motivator. Another photo is coming, our Head, whom you have also gotten to know, but you see here a few points, because Mr. Wagenschneider described it so beautifully and briefly, I do not want to go into it again now, but very briefly um he wrote his last work, he wrote over 90 books, his last work, which he wrote before his um passing, that is "Message of Reconciliation." And there he called upon all peoples, all tribes, all religions once more and said that we are all one human family and that we should be ready to sacrifice much for other religions as well and always ensure that we uh live together in peace. Um his main task was um to show again the path that people have lost to God. On the one hand to bring the rights of God close to people again, but at the same time also the rights of fellow human beings. And that is also the basis of the teaching of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, but at the very top, as I said, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. His message, his teaching of peace, he brought close to humanity once more in simple words. Uh you also know us with the slogan "Love for all, hatred for none." I have already
just mentioned. Just keep going, keep going. Um, that was also just mentioned by our federal chairman. who is also with the Muslim community is present in more than 190 countries of the world. Uh, over 70 languages the Holy Quran has already been translated into and the current head of the Ahmed Muslim Community is named Massud Ahmed, I would like to show you a photo right away and so on. This is the current head of the Ahmed Muslim Community. Ms. Reka, our mayor, mentioned the protection of the Cologne Cathedral. I would like to tell a very small story here and say, everything that the Ahmed Muslim Community has achieved here in Cologne or also uh nationwide in these years, everything we owe to our beloved Caliph, head of the Ahmed Muslim Community. also the flood in the Ah, the flood relief that we provided from here, that we drove off from here every morning for 70 days and represented the city of Cologne and then 170,000 meals that we delivered to the people there. Our Caliph also addressed us from London and said, this is the time when you can be there for your country and also for your fellow human beings. Cologne Cathedral, why I also took the photo. Pure coincidence. December 2023 was the threat of an attack. September 2023 was our head here in Germany on a tour of Germany. At a mosque opening he said that I promise the people here in Germany, if one day it should come to that, that any mosque or a church, a synagogue and a house of God should somehow be attacked, the Ahmed Muslims will also stand at the front line and protect the houses of God. It came to that and uh we had the opportunity, the honor, to implement what the Holy Quran has also taught and the promise that our beloved Caliph has also given to the people in Germany and worldwide. You see uh here, I would like to briefly read this out. He promised in his speech. Whenever any of you need help, we promise to be there and to help and to support, wherever we can. In times of grief and turmoil we will always be there to dry the tears of our neighbors and to support and comfort them. And that we have also taken to heart. We are from Cologne, Muslims and it is an instruction from the Holy Quran, from the Holy Prophet, that Muslims, when a house of God is in danger, should immediately protect it. And we also tried to implement that. So, this is just for history, because that is now the last year, a few days still, then Ms. Reka will bid us farewell. It was a beautiful time with Ms. Reka. She supported the Ahmed Muslim Community for many years, was always there. And the photo, why I took it, uh I know, maybe Ms. Reker does not want me to mention that here now, but forgive me, I will do it anyway now. Um, a mayor has hundreds of appointments, even what I have been told from the office, 7,000 requests come in for appointments over the whole year and when you bring that down to 365 days, then there are still weekends and holidays and so on. Nevertheless, on our invitation, the re-invitation followed and then also to the hundredth anniversary of the community, when I am still standing, beautiful photos were created and that also shows that the Ahmed Muslim Community has been here for 100 years already, from 1923 to 2023, so Ms. Reka, once again many heartfelt thanks, continue. So, now we come to the bicycle, about which I should speak today. I have added one more slide. He does not count on it either, but I will show you who, after our head of the Muslim Community, is the inspiration for us all, for us young people, for older people, with cycling. Continue. This is our chairman Mr. Wageshauser, who is sitting here, who for many years already
that he has spent his time on this and that it was also truly right that he always cycled for peace. The jersey that you see here, Muslims for Peace, that was I think this year or last year the photo that was taken, which the press also reported on again. So he is our inspiration. That is why we also founded this cycling club here in Cologne and on most tours he is always at the front and leads us as well. So a very, very big thank you. I just wanted you to know that this person has contributed very much to the fact that we are standing where we are today. [Applause] So, the church visits you know. When we founded the cycling club, we visited numerous churches. From that the contact also arose. Where is Mr. Höfer? Mr. Höfer is sitting here in front. Thank you once more for that as well. And uh, a few pictures will follow so that you are informed. This is also a sign that we have set, that we have said, no, we do not stay in our mosque, but we ride up, we visit mosques, we visit synagogues, temples, all other houses of God, to build this bond, this friendship. And we should not wait for someone to come to us, but we take the first
